Camp Cleghorn About

For Wisconsinites, the allure of the Chain O' Lakes is undeniable – a string of picturesque lakes offering boundless opportunities for relaxation and recreation. Nestled within this cherished region is Camp Cleghorn, a truly unique and historic destination that has been a beloved retreat for generations of families. While the name might suggest a traditional campground, Camp Cleghorn offers something distinctly different: a quaint and peaceful community of private cottages, providing a tranquil and neighborly environment that has delighted visitors for over a century. It's a place where tradition meets timeless natural beauty, perfect for those seeking a serene escape right here in our Badger State.

Introduction / Overview

Camp Cleghorn, founded in 1897, has a rich and fascinating history. What began as a summer camp with a mission centered around temperance has evolved into a cherished association of 41 private cottage owners. It’s not a public campground in the typical sense, where you'd pull up an RV or pitch a tent; rather, it’s a community where families own and rent out cottages, fostering a strong sense of camaraderie and peaceful living. The "camping area" as it once was, transitioned long ago, over 40 years to be exact, into these delightful private residences. This deep-rooted heritage contributes to the camp's quiet and demure environment, making it a unique gem on the Chain O' Lakes. Many families have called Camp Cleghorn their summer home for multiple generations, a testament to its enduring appeal and welcoming atmosphere. Visitors describe it as a "cute cabin town" where "everyone is so friendly and neighborly," making it an ideal spot for those who appreciate community and a tranquil setting.

Location and Accessibility

Camp Cleghorn is perfectly situated on the south-east corner of Columbia Lake, a part of the magnificent Waupaca Chain O' Lakes. Its address is Camp Rd, Waupaca, WI 54981, USA, placing it firmly within one of Wisconsin's most beloved recreational areas. The location offers easy access to the entire Chain O' Lakes, providing endless opportunities for boating, fishing, swimming, and exploring the crystal-clear waters. While nestled in a serene spot, Camp Cleghorn is still conveniently located for local access. The vibrant town of Waupaca is just a short drive away, offering all the necessary amenities, including grocery stores, charming local shops, and a variety of dining options. As one local visitor noted, even an ice cream shop is a quick ten-minute walk down the road, adding to the convenience and charm. This blend of secluded natural beauty and nearby town conveniences makes Camp Cleghorn an ideal spot for a relaxing and accessible Wisconsin vacation.

Services Offered

While Camp Cleghorn operates primarily as a private cottage association, guests who rent cottages within the community benefit from a range of amenities and a well-maintained environment. It's important to reiterate that this is not a traditional campground with individual tent or RV sites, but rather a community where cottages are the primary accommodation. Services and offerings for those staying in a cottage typically include:

  • Cottage Rentals: Individual cottage owners rent their properties, often fully equipped with kitchens, living areas, and bedrooms, offering a comfortable home-away-from-home experience. Availability and specific amenities vary by individual cottage.
  • Private Swimming Area: The camp features a private swimming area for its residents and guests, complete with a sizable dock perfect for sunbathing or simply enjoying the lakeside views.
  • Recreational Courts: For active guests, there's a park area that includes both a basketball court and a tennis court, providing opportunities for friendly competition and outdoor exercise.
  • Historic Cleghorn Chapel: A significant part of the camp's heritage is its historic 100-year-old Cleghorn Chapel. Summer worship services are offered every Sunday morning at 9:15 AM throughout the summer, providing a non-denominational spiritual option for visitors.
  • Preserved Natural Environment: Camp Cleghorn is dedicated to preserving its environment. A major piece of its heritage is the land held as undeveloped wilderness, ensuring that areas like Lost Lake and the surrounding woods remain in their natural state for all to appreciate.
  • Community Atmosphere: While not a service in the typical sense, the strong sense of community and friendly, neighborly environment is a key aspect of staying at Camp Cleghorn, as highlighted by numerous reviews.

Features / Highlights

Camp Cleghorn's distinct character is defined by several key features and highlights that make it a truly special place for those familiar with the Chain O' Lakes area:

  • Multi-Generational Appeal: As noted by a four-generation family, the camp fosters a deep connection and serves as a cherished retreat passed down through families, creating a strong sense of tradition and belonging.
  • Quiet and Demure Environment: Unlike busier recreational spots, Camp Cleghorn offers a peaceful and serene atmosphere, perfect for unwinding and escaping the hustle and bustle of daily life.
  • Access to Columbia Lake: Being directly on Columbia Lake provides direct access to the Chain O' Lakes for boating, fishing, and swimming, offering all the joys of lakeside living.
  • Recreational Facilities: The presence of a basketball court, tennis court, and a private swimming area with a sizable sunbathing dock provides ample opportunities for both active play and relaxed enjoyment.
  • Historic Charm: The century-old Cleghorn Chapel and the camp's deep history add a unique layer of charm and character, appealing to those who appreciate heritage and a sense of timelessness.
  • Friendly Community: Guests consistently remark on the warm and welcoming nature of the residents and staff, creating a truly neighborly and friendly "cabin town" experience.
  • Proximity to Local Amenities: The convenience of having an ice cream shop within walking distance and the town of Waupaca a short drive away means you have the best of both worlds – peaceful seclusion with easy access to necessities and entertainment.
  • Undeveloped Wilderness Preservation: The camp's commitment to preserving areas like Lost Lake and surrounding woods in their natural state provides beautiful, untouched spaces for quiet contemplation and nature appreciation.

Promotions or Special Offers

Given that Camp Cleghorn is primarily a community of privately owned cottages, "promotions" or "special offers" aren't typically offered directly by a central campground management in the same way a commercial entity might. Instead, any special rates or deals would be at the discretion of individual cottage owners who rent out their properties. It's highly recommended that interested parties look for listings of Camp Cleghorn cottages on vacation rental websites (such as VRBO, Airbnb, or local Waupaca rental agencies). On these platforms, individual owners may occasionally offer:

  • Off-Season Rates: Lower prices during the shoulder seasons (spring and fall) or outside of major holidays.
  • Last-Minute Deals: Reduced rates for bookings made close to the arrival date if the cottage is still vacant.
  • Extended Stay Discounts: A lower nightly rate for booking a week or longer, common for vacation rentals.
  • Early Bird Specials: Occasionally, owners might offer a small discount for bookings made far in advance.

To find the best deals, search for "Camp Cleghorn cottage rental Waupaca WI" or contact local real estate agents who manage vacation rentals in the Waupaca area. Directly inquiring with cottage owners about potential discounts for longer stays or specific dates can also be fruitful.

My family has owned a cottage here for 4 generations now, and it's a wonderful place to go on a trip. The camp is a quiet and demure environment, that has plenty of fun to be had. There's a park with a basketball and tennis court. The private swimming area for the camp, has a sizable dock for sunbathing. And the ice cream shop is a quick ten minutes walk down the road. It's a quaint and peaceful place to visit.
