Introduction / Overview
For New Hampshire residents seeking an unparalleled, truly detached summer vacation experience—one that blends the nostalgic charm of summer camp with the ease of an all-inclusive resort—Sandy Island Family Camp is an iconic and highly cherished institution. Managed by the Greater Boston YMCA, this is not a typical mainland campground, but a private island retreat located on a picturesque, 66-acre island within the vast and beautiful Lake Winnipesaukee.
The camp operates on a week-long, Saturday-to-Saturday format during the summer season, offering families an escape from the moment they step onto the boat and leave their car and everyday worries behind. The atmosphere is centered on health, happiness, and a strong sense of community, fostering an environment where families can genuinely recharge and bond. This is achieved through a perfect blend of structured, engaging activities and ample time for relaxation—whether it’s on a cabin porch with a book or on one of the two private, sandy beaches.
The accommodation is classic New England rustic: simple, lakefront cabins designed for families ranging from small groups up to ten people. The unique all-inclusive model covers most of the essential vacation elements, from all your meals to planned daily and nightly events. As one local review notes, many families, including various church groups and others, come "year after year same week," a testament to the strong traditions and sense of belonging that Sandy Island has cultivated over generations of operation on the lake.

Run by Greater Boston YMCA, Sandy is a family camp. Park over at North Woods and take a boat over for a week, Saturday to Saturday. There are cabins for 2-6 people, family dining in mess hall. Showers here, plenty of panned events. Often same families come year after year same week.
Aug 23, 2024 · SteveOur church group opens the season every year on Memorial Day weekend before the camp is in full swing, do I can’t speak to programs. The setting , staff, and food are all fantastic! Great kayaks and canoes. The cabins are rustic but great, though the beds are a bit firm if you have an old body. Bring a pad!
May 28, 2019 · Kevin OsbornGreat family camp ground. The organizers take great care to ensure everyone's safe and happy. I was there for an annual Tai Chi camp with 49 other students. The camp has been held at this location since 2011.
Sep 18, 2022 · Tony CoatesSituated on their own private island in the middle of one of New England's largest clear water lakes. Very rustic. No tenting, cabins only. Meals are included; basic non-fancy cafeteria style for the most part. But that means NO DISHES! They have a large variety activities for everyone. They also have weekday morning programs for the pre-teens, which lets parents start their days with a little kid-free time. This is the best family camp in New England, maybe even the best in the US, perhaps even the world. If you can find better, it won't be by much.
Aug 13, 2023 · David RobbinsI've been coming here every year for a church retreat. By September the water is on the cold side. The food and rooms are a bit Spartan, but makes for a nice retreat from civilization. The camp staff are pretty hands-off, so make sure there'll be enough for you to do while you're there.
