Elkins Creek Horse Camp & Tack About

Introduction / Overview

For many Ohio residents, especially those with a passion for horses and the great outdoors, finding the perfect campground is about more than just a place to park an RV or pitch a tent. It's about finding a destination that caters specifically to the unique needs of equestrian campers, offering direct access to riding trails, appropriate facilities for horses, and a welcoming community of fellow riders. Ohio's diverse landscapes, from its forests to its scenic rolling hills, provide an ideal backdrop for trail riding adventures.

Among the dedicated equestrian campgrounds in the state, Elkins Creek Horse Camp & Tack stands out as a highly regarded and beloved destination in Pedro, Ohio. Unlike general campgrounds, Elkins Creek is specifically designed to provide an immersive and comfortable experience for horse and rider. The "Tack" in its name suggests that it also serves as a resource for equestrian supplies, adding to its utility for horse owners.

Customer reviews paint a consistent picture of a well-maintained facility, excellent trails, and, most importantly, incredibly friendly and accommodating hosts. This personal touch, where owners become "extended family," is a significant draw for many. Elkins Creek Horse Camp & Tack offers a unique blend of rugged outdoor adventure on horseback with the comforts and community spirit that make for a truly memorable camping experience. This overview aims to highlight what makes this specific campground a top choice for local Ohio equestrians and outdoor enthusiasts.

Location and Accessibility

Elkins Creek Horse Camp & Tack is situated at 223TwpRd, 245 East, Pedro, OH 45659, USA. This address places it firmly in Southern Ohio, within Lawrence County, an area known for its natural beauty and a more rural, secluded feel compared to the state's larger metropolitan centers. Pedro itself is a small, unincorporated community, contributing to the "off the beaten path" appeal that many horse campers seek for uninterrupted trail riding and tranquility.

Access to Elkins Creek, while not on a major interstate, is typically managed via well-maintained county and township roads. For horse trailers and RVs, the routes leading to the camp are generally navigable, ensuring a smooth arrival. The relatively remote location is a deliberate feature, as it allows for extensive and natural trail systems that would be difficult to establish closer to urban areas. This makes it an ideal destination for those who value extensive riding opportunities directly from their campsite.

For Ohio residents, particularly those in the southern and central parts of the state, Elkins Creek is a feasible drive for a weekend trip or a longer equestrian vacation. While the immediate vicinity might not offer extensive commercial services, the appeal lies in its natural surroundings. Campers typically come prepared with their horse's needs in mind, and the on-site "Tack" component likely offers essential supplies. The peaceful and scenic drive to the camp is part of the overall experience, leading to a truly immersive equestrian retreat where the focus is on the trails and the camaraderie of fellow horse enthusiasts.

My husband and I had a wonderful stay at Elkins Creek. We arrived late afternoon on Saturday and Rick greeted us at the entrance and quickly found us a wonderful site for our trailer next to the creek and stalls for our horses at the barn just 50 ft away. We got a short ride in that evening on the trails which are adjacent to the campground. Sunday was a bit rainy, but we got in a 3 hour ride on the paddle creek loop. Rained out Monday, but met a great group of ladies that were regulars. On Tuesday, Jill and the other ladies and us packed up the horses and trailered out to where the best views were by Lake Vesuvius and rode for 3 hours. Amazing ride and spectacular views! Campground is clean and rustic and very fun to stay at. Rick and Jill are laid back and very hospitable. We will be back again!

We had another great stay and great riding at Elkins Creek. They were almost full but it didn’t feel crowded. We always enjoy seeing Rick and Jill who are super hosts. The trails were great! We especially enjoyed the Vista ride as well as multiple rides that took us through the super cool rock houses. We were completely offline with no internet which felt great! There is a house land line that you can use to call home.
