Horseshoe Bend Float Camp About
For those of us in Missouri who truly love to get off the beaten path and immerse ourselves in the raw beauty of the Ozarks, Horseshoe Bend Float Camp offers an unparalleled experience. Tucked away along the pristine Eleven Point National Scenic River, this primitive campground is designed for the adventurous spirit – those who arrive by water and cherish a rustic, no-frills connection with nature.
Horseshoe Bend Float Camp is a unique destination within the Mark Twain National Forest, specifically designed as a primitive float camp. This means it's primarily accessible by river, typically after a scenic float down the Eleven Point National Scenic River. Located about 9.5 miles downriver from Greer Crossing, with McDowell being the nearest upstream put-in, it offers a tranquil overnight stop for floaters. The camp features five individual primitive campsites, each thoughtfully equipped with a fire ring that includes a grill attachment, as well as convenient lantern post hangers. While some picnic benches might show signs of wear, they still provide a functional spot for riverside meals. A key feature highlighted by visitors is the camp's elevated position off the river, which provides a crucial safety measure against potential water level rises during the night – a valuable detail for river campers. For sanitation, a composting toilet is available, aligning with the low-impact nature of primitive camping. The ambiance here is one of true wilderness, offering a stark contrast to more developed campgrounds. It’s a place where the sounds of the river and the surrounding forest are your primary companions, ideal for those seeking solitude, exceptional fishing, or an authentic overnight float trip experience on one of Missouri's most cherished wild and scenic rivers. The minimal amenities encourage a self-reliant approach, emphasizing a deeper connection with the natural environment.
Horseshoe Bend Float Camp is situated in a remote area near Fremont, MO 63941, USA, within the sprawling Mark Twain National Forest. Its precise location is on the left side of the Eleven Point National Scenic River, approximately 9.5 miles downriver from Greer Crossing.
A crucial aspect of Horseshoe Bend Float Camp is its accessibility: it is primarily, if not exclusively, accessible by river. This means visitors typically embark on a float trip, launching from an upstream access point like McDowell (which is upriver from Greer Crossing). There is no direct road access to the campground itself, which contributes to its secluded and pristine nature. For Missouri residents planning a visit, this necessitates arranging a float trip, either with a personal canoe, kayak, or raft, or by utilizing one of the local outfitters that provide rentals and shuttle services on the Eleven Point River (such as Eleven Point River Canoe Rental/Hufstelder's Canoe Rental, Richards Canoe Rental, or Down River Canoe). The nearest towns for supplies are Alton or Doniphan, so campers must plan ahead and bring all necessary provisions, as there are no stores or services directly at the camp. This "river-only" access enhances the wilderness experience, ensuring a quieter and more natural environment, appealing to those seeking an authentic backcountry camping adventure on one of Missouri's most scenic waterways. Visitors should always check current river conditions and water levels before embarking on their trip, as conditions can change rapidly.

Customer Reviews
I normally camp with friends on gravel bars, but this camp is pretty cool. We came across it while hiking to go fish the bend. I think there were four or five sites and most if not all had a fire ring with grill attachment. All of them had lamp post hangers and some had rotting picnic benches. There is one composting toilet. The site is raised off of the river so it will likely be safe if the water were to rise at night while sleeping.
Nice spot to camp. Has fire pits with grill grates, open pit toilet and plenty of ticks. Gets you at a safe height if the river rises.
