This campground is a perfect fit for those who appreciate a more natural, less commercialized camping experience, focusing on the sheer beauty of the environment.
Redd Hollow is not your typical full-service resort; its charm lies in its simplicity and its direct connection to the wild. It caters to individuals and families who seek quiet solitude, abundant wildlife, and, most notably, direct access to the water for boating and fishing. This article will provide a clear, factual, and informative overview of Redd Hollow Self-Service Campground & Boat Ramp, drawing on publicly available information and glowing reviews from those who have experienced its unique appeal. Our aim is to help our Kentucky neighbors understand what makes this gem a suitable choice for their next outdoor adventure.
Redd Hollow Self-Service Campground & Boat Ramp is a primitive-style campground managed by the U.S. Forest Service within the vast Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. Its "self-service" designation means campers largely manage their own experience, which appeals to those who prefer a more independent and less structured camping environment. The campground’s dual identity as both a camping area and a boat ramp immediately highlights its primary draw: direct, easy access to the water for boating, fishing, and other aquatic activities.
What sets Redd Hollow apart is its commitment to preserving a natural, unspoiled setting. It’s a place where the sounds of wildlife often replace the hum of generators, and starry nights are truly dark. This campground is particularly renowned as a "boater's paradise," offering a peaceful retreat away from more crowded areas. It’s ideal for those who value quiet reflection, abundant birdwatching opportunities, and direct immersion in the natural beauty of the LBL. While it offers basic amenities, its strength lies in its natural surroundings and direct access to outdoor recreation, making it a beloved spot for those who seek a genuine connection with Kentucky's wilderness.
Redd Hollow Self-Service Campground & Boat Ramp is uniquely situated on Forest Service Rd 171, near Murray, KY 42071, USA. This location places it deep within the heart of the Land Between the Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area, a vast and protected outdoor haven managed by the U.S. Forest Service. The LBL is famous for its extensive forests, diverse wildlife, and the two massive lakes it separates, Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley, offering endless opportunities for recreation.
Access to Redd Hollow typically involves traveling through the scenic landscapes of the LBL. While it offers a secluded feel, it is generally accessible via well-maintained Forest Service roads. Visitors should be prepared for a less developed road experience compared to major highways, which contributes to its rustic charm. Despite its natural setting, the campground is still within a reasonable driving distance of the city of Murray. This proximity means that campers can easily reach essential services in Murray, such as grocery stores for stocking up on supplies, gas stations, and other retail needs, before or after their stay. The primary accessibility highlight, however, is its direct access to a boat ramp, making it incredibly convenient for those who wish to launch their vessels directly into the surrounding waters and explore the expansive lake system. This blend of natural seclusion with practical access to nearby town amenities makes Redd Hollow an attractive destination for serious outdoors enthusiasts in Kentucky.
As a "self-service" campground, Redd Hollow emphasizes a more rustic and independent camping experience, providing essential facilities rather than extensive amenities. The services offered are designed to support a nature-focused stay, particularly for boaters:
Visitors should arrive at Redd Hollow prepared for a self-sufficient camping trip, bringing all necessary supplies, especially water, and being ready to manage their waste responsibly. The focus here is on immersion in nature with minimal infrastructure.
Redd Hollow Self-Service Campground & Boat Ramp offers a unique set of features that appeal strongly to specific types of campers and outdoor enthusiasts. Here are some of its key highlights:
It is important to note that there is no water pump on-site, requiring campers to bring their own water. Additionally, some sites might not be directly adjacent to the boat ramp, and finding the "best" spots might require early arrival due to the first-come, first-served policy.
As a self-service campground operated within a National Recreation Area, Redd Hollow typically does not offer traditional "promotions" or "special offers" in the commercial sense. Pricing for such campgrounds is usually standardized and set by the managing authority (U.S. Forest Service in the case of LBL), focusing on very affordable rates for basic site usage.
The inherent "special offer" of Redd Hollow lies in its affordability and the value it provides for direct access to premium recreational areas. These types of campgrounds are designed to be accessible to a wide range of visitors due to their low fees, which often only cover minimal operational costs. For the most accurate and up-to-date information on site fees and any specific regulations, visitors should consult the official Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area website or contact the LBL Visitor Information Line. Typically, fees are collected via an honor system at the campground entrance.
For general inquiries about Redd Hollow Self-Service Campground & Boat Ramp, or for information regarding the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, please use the following contact details. While specific inquiries about individual campsites are limited due to the first-come, first-served nature, the LBL information line can provide overall guidance on the area:
It is important to remember that as a self-service campground, on-site personnel may not always be present for direct assistance. Information kiosks at the campground typically provide essential details upon arrival.
For Kentuckians, Redd Hollow Self-Service Campground & Boat Ramp offers an ideal and unique escape, particularly for those who cherish raw natural beauty and a more independent camping experience. Its location deep within the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area is a significant draw, providing unparalleled access to one of Kentucky's most treasured outdoor playgrounds. For local boaters, anglers, and water sports enthusiasts, the direct access to a boat ramp transforms it into a true "boater's paradise," allowing for immediate immersion into the vast waters of the LBL.
The quiet, often uncrowded atmosphere is a major appeal for those seeking solitude and a genuine connection with nature, away from the hustle and bustle of more developed resorts. It’s a perfect spot for birdwatchers and wildlife observers, offering ample opportunities to witness Kentucky's diverse fauna in their natural habitat. This type of primitive camping, with its reliance on personal preparedness (like bringing your own water), fosters a sense of self-reliance and deep appreciation for the environment that many outdoors-loving Kentuckians value.
Furthermore, the affordability of a self-service campground makes it an accessible option for a wide range of local residents, ensuring that the beauty of the LBL is available to all. For those who understand and embrace the ethos of leave-no-trace camping, and who prioritize natural immersion over extensive amenities, Redd Hollow stands as a testament to Kentucky's wild beauty. It’s a place where you can truly disconnect, recharge, and enjoy the pristine outdoors right in your backyard, making it an excellent choice for a genuine Kentucky adventure.

A boaters paradise ! In mid april the place is almost empty !! Birds, warblers, wood peckers, heron, eagles!!! Site 30 the best ( but not as close to boat ramp) FCFS camp sites. No water pump. Clean vault toilet. Other things to do also close by in the Land Between the Lakes NP

Jun 03, 2025 · Rachel SchehrThe campground could use some maintenance, busted picnic tables and fire rings. It does have beautiful views of the lake. The vault toilet was very clean
Nov 17, 2024 · Edward RoyseGreat campsites by the water for $5 clean toilet an all-around good campground.
Nov 07, 2024 · Xavier HamiltonEnjoyed our camping trip at redd hollow, its our favorite camping spot. Also a great spot for kayaking or floating and swimming for a day trip. So sad that every time we go now we fill a trash bag picking up other peoples garbage. There is a dumpster but sadly people are lazy.
