Tucked away within the sprawling and beautiful George Washington State Forest, Thistledew is the ideal destination for local campers, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts who appreciate a peaceful, more primitive style of camping. This highly-regarded spot is managed by McCarthy Beach State Park and has consistently earned praise from visitors for its well-maintained sites, clear-water lake, and exceptionally quiet atmosphere.
Unlike some of the larger, more commercialized parks in the state, Thistledew is designed to provide only the basic, essential needs of the camper, allowing the focus to remain squarely on the natural beauty of the Minnesota wilderness. This commitment to a simpler experience often makes it feel secluded, even on busy weekends, giving local users a true sense of escape and connection with nature.

What a beautiful campground!! The sites are well maintained with picnic tables and firepits with swing over grates. It was extremely quiet with everyone in the campground being considerate of their volume. Most of the time it felt like we were the only ones there. (It was midweek though) The vault toilets are clean and well stocked. The lake is beautiful and there are many sites on the shoreline. The only warning I would give is that there are limited sites that are appropriate for RVs or travel trailers and anything more than 25 ft would likely have a tough time coming around the loop the road takes.
Jul 10, 2025 · Jessica PalmNice, clear water swimming lake and well-maintained campground. Entirely first-come, first-served. The place seems underutilized; just a few campsites were occupied on a nice-weather July Sunday evening. The campground has numerous lakefront sites. Visitors shouldn't have any issues finding a site, even on a warm summer weekend.
Aug 08, 2022 · Greg KruegerI've been camping here for 30 years. It's a nice clear lake with some fish. It's shallow in front of the campground and the kids can swim from most of the lake sites. Keep a clean camp or bring a dog with to deter fairly regular bear visits. It's nice that wheelers aren't allowed in the campground. We leave ours wheelers out in the parking lot. We live 10 min away and trailer over just to ride the nice trails .
