It's important for potential visitors to be aware of the campground's proximity to a shooting range, as mentioned in customer reviews. The surrounding area of Marengo is characterized by its agricultural landscapes and pockets of natural woodlands, providing a tranquil backdrop for camping and outdoor activities. This blend of natural beauty and practical access makes Thomas Woods Campground an attractive option for local campers across Illinois.

For us Illinois locals, Thomas Woods Campground in Marengo is an exceptionally suitable and authentic destination for those seeking a true back-to-nature camping experience. Its primary appeal lies in its commitment to rustic tent camping, providing an escape from the concrete jungle without the usual distractions of RV parks. If you're someone who appreciates the sound of nature, the crackle of a campfire, and the simplicity of sleeping under the stars, this place is tailor-made for you. The "beautiful and well maintained" grounds, adorned with magnificent oak trees, create a picturesque setting that truly allows us to feel immersed in Illinois' natural beauty.
The accessibility of the campground is another major plus. Located conveniently on IL-23 in Marengo, it’s a relatively short drive for many of us across Northern Illinois, making it an ideal spot for a quick weekend getaway without extensive travel. Once there, the "well maintained hiking trails" offer ample opportunities to explore the landscape, providing both a physical activity and a chance to observe local flora and fauna. The presence of clean, functional facilities like composting toilets and readily available potable well water ensures that even a rustic experience can be comfortable. While some might note the proximity to a shooting range, for many hardcore tent campers, this is a minor consideration compared to the overall quality of the natural setting and the authentic camping atmosphere.
In essence, Thomas Woods Campground caters perfectly to the local Illinoisan who desires an unplugged, genuine outdoor adventure. It’s a place where families can introduce their "little ones" to the joys of nature (with a gentle reminder about falling acorns!), and where experienced campers can find the solitude and rugged charm they seek. It’s a testament to the fact that compelling outdoor experiences are readily available right here in our own state, making Thomas Woods Campground a top choice for our next local camping expedition.
It was a beautiful and well maintained camp ground with one major flaw - it is near a shooting range and on a Saturday night in September we heard constant shooting well into the night, till at least 10pm making it hard for our little ones to fall asleep and really detracting from the beauty of the place. If that doesn't bother you, it was a lovely place with lovely camp sites including many with a short walk away from parking for a more natural setting, well maintained hiking trails, clean bathrooms with composting toilets, and a water spicket with drinkable well water at the entrance to the campground. Also note that the oak trees were beautiful though one of the kids did get hit in the head with an acorn falling from a tree, they were ok but it did hurt quite a bit!
Sep 24, 2023 · Diana MHardcore tent camping 100% loved it! Next time probably won't bring the wife. LoL 😂 camp sites are awesome, plenty of hiking, for younger folks.
Aug 01, 2024 · Adam ChristianNice clean campground. Campsites are of decent size. Just wish there was access to running water other than near the entrance.
May 18, 2023 · Mischa SchlichtingNicely separated tent camp sites with 3 or 4 sites per cluster--nice for larger parties or family with several tents. The pit toilets were clean and the water pump was a neat touch. Too bad there aren't showers.
Aug 11, 2020 · Steve DReally great campsite. Toilets were plentiful (with no odor), the campsites were well placed, no mosquitoes which is usually unheard of this time of year and right after heavy rain. We brought our own water but they had various hands pumps for washing water. The attendant family was very friendly and helpful. Their little girl even gave my twins a hug when we arrived.
