Location and Accessibility

Thomas Woods Campground is conveniently situated at 3100 IL-23, Marengo, IL 60152, USA. Its location in Marengo, within McHenry County, places it in a prime spot for Illinois residents seeking a relatively quick drive to a natural escape. The campground's direct access from IL-23 makes it straightforward to find and reach, even for those who may not be familiar with the area. While offering a sense of seclusion and immersion in nature, Thomas Woods is not entirely cut off from the conveniences of civilization. Larger towns like Woodstock and Crystal Lake are within a reasonable driving distance, offering more extensive shopping, dining, and other services if needed. This balance of rustic charm and nearby accessibility is a significant benefit for local campers.

It's important for potential visitors to be aware of the campground's proximity to a shooting range, as mentioned in customer reviews. While this might be a consideration for some, particularly those with very young children sensitive to noise, for others, it might be a minor detail that doesn't detract from the overall "lovely place" and the beauty of the natural setting. The surrounding area of Marengo is characterized by its agricultural landscapes and pockets of natural woodlands, providing a tranquil backdrop for camping and outdoor activities. This blend of natural beauty and practical access makes Thomas Woods Campground an attractive option for local campers across Illinois.

Promotions or Special Offers

As a public campground likely managed by the McHenry County Conservation District, Thomas Woods Campground may not offer the same type of "promotions" as a commercial enterprise. However, for local users in Illinois, there are often ways to access the campground or its associated activities that could be considered beneficial:

  • Affordable Rates: Public campgrounds typically offer more affordable nightly rates compared to private RV parks or glamping resorts, making them an accessible option for many Illinois families and individuals. This inherent affordability acts as a constant "special offer."
  • Seasonal Pass Programs (for the Conservation District): While specific to the campground, the McHenry County Conservation District might offer annual passes or memberships that provide benefits across all their properties, potentially including reduced fees or early access to reservations for facilities like Thomas Woods. It's worth checking the Conservation District's official website for such programs.
  • Educational Programs & Events: The Conservation District often hosts free or low-cost educational programs, guided hikes, or nature-based events at their properties. While not direct campground discounts, participating in these can enhance the overall experience at the site.
  • Off-Peak Season Camping: While Thomas Woods is particularly lovely in the fall with its oak trees, visiting during less popular times (e.g., early spring or late fall, if open) might sometimes lead to fewer crowds and a more serene experience, effectively enhancing the value of the stay.

It was a beautiful and well maintained camp ground with one major flaw - it is near a shooting range and on a Saturday night in September we heard constant shooting well into the night, till at least 10pm making it hard for our little ones to fall asleep and really detracting from the beauty of the place. If that doesn't bother you, it was a lovely place with lovely camp sites including many with a short walk away from parking for a more natural setting, well maintained hiking trails, clean bathrooms with composting toilets, and a water spicket with drinkable well water at the entrance to the campground. Also note that the oak trees were beautiful though one of the kids did get hit in the head with an acorn falling from a tree, they were ok but it did hurt quite a bit!

Nice clean campground. Campsites are of decent size. Just wish there was access to running water other than near the entrance.

Nicely separated tent camp sites with 3 or 4 sites per cluster--nice for larger parties or family with several tents. The pit toilets were clean and the water pump was a neat touch. Too bad there aren't showers.

Really great campsite. Toilets were plentiful (with no odor), the campsites were well placed, no mosquitoes which is usually unheard of this time of year and right after heavy rain. We brought our own water but they had various hands pumps for washing water. The attendant family was very friendly and helpful. Their little girl even gave my twins a hug when we arrived.
