Arbutus Lake State Forest Campground About
Introduction / Overview
For Michiganders who cherish the natural beauty and tranquility of the state's forests and lakes, Arbutus Lake State Forest Campground offers a quintessential rustic camping experience. Nestled along the northwest shore of Arbutus Lake #4, amidst a hilly hardwood forest of beech and maple, this self-serve campground provides a convenient yet immersive escape into Northern Michigan's wilderness. It's a place where the sounds of nature, like falling acorns in the autumn, replace the city's hustle, and the pristine waters of Arbutus Lake invite relaxation and recreation.
As a state forest campground, Arbutus Lake offers a more traditional and less developed camping experience compared to full-service RV parks. It appeals to those who appreciate simplicity, quiet surroundings, and direct access to outdoor activities like fishing, paddling, and exploring state land. While some sites offer a more communal feel, walk-in sites provide a sense of privacy with picturesque lake views. Despite its rustic nature, the campground is often described as clean and quiet, making it a reliable choice for a peaceful getaway. If you're looking for an authentic Michigan camping adventure close to the amenities of Traverse City, Arbutus Lake State Forest Campground is a wonderful starting point for your outdoor exploration.
Location and Accessibility
Arbutus Lake State Forest Campground is conveniently located at N Arbutus Lake Rd, Traverse City, MI 49686, USA. This address places it just 15 to 20 minutes southeast of downtown Traverse City, making it remarkably accessible for a state forest campground. The proximity to Traverse City is a significant advantage for campers who desire a rustic outdoor experience but also appreciate the convenience of nearby urban amenities, including dining, shopping, and cultural attractions.
The campground is situated along Arbutus Lake #4, which is part of a string of five small, connected lakes. Access to the campground is via paved roads for the most part, though specific site access might involve dirt roads. While some sites allow for small trailers, the "rustic" designation typically means fewer amenities compared to modern RV parks, and some walk-in sites may require a short walk to transport gear from your vehicle. This blend of seclusion and accessibility to a major Northern Michigan hub makes Arbutus Lake State Forest Campground an ideal choice for locals seeking a quick escape to nature without a lengthy journey into the remote wilderness. It's well-positioned for exploring not only Traverse City but also the broader Grand Traverse region's beautiful lakes, forests, and other attractions.

Promotions or Special Offers
As a Michigan State Forest Campground, Arbutus Lake operates under state park fee structures and policies. Specific "promotions" or special offers like those found at private campgrounds are generally not offered. Instead, the value lies in the consistent and affordable pricing set by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for access to these natural treasures. A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry into state forest campgrounds, which can be purchased annually or daily. The campsite fee itself is typically a set daily rate, currently around $20 per night, and these fees are subject to change by the DNR. Reservations for state forest campgrounds are often on a first-come, first-served basis, especially for rustic sites, though some state campgrounds do offer online reservations through the DNR's system. For the most up-to-date information on current fees, Recreation Passport requirements, and any specific reservation policies (including if any sites are reservable vs. first-come, first-served), it is highly recommended to visit the official Michigan DNR website or contact the park directly. This ensures you have the accurate details needed to plan your stay at Arbutus Lake State Forest Campground.

Customer Reviews
Convenient location from Traverse City with a nice swimming beach. Some sites are very connected with each other without much vegetation between them, but there are some walk-in sites that have some privacy with a view of the lake. Some of these sites don't have parking immediately next to the stairs so a little walk is needed to get your gear from the car if you took one of those. It was fairly busy compared to some other state forest around the area. My site had a lot of acorns on the ground and in the fall season acorns kept dropping on my tent at night, but otherwise I enjoyed my stay there.
Nice little self serve campground. Clean and quiet. 15 minutes from traverse city
Loved this campground, disappointed to see how much trash was laying around though. We really cleaned up around our site, but wished others would do the same and not use this wonderful forest as a trashcan. Other than that, very peaceful and quiet when party people weren't there. Definitely want to go again!
Dead quiet unless you consider the Loons, Swan, and huge variety of other birds enjoying Arbutus Lake. The campground hadn't been cleaned up for the season yet but was still in pretty good shape. A good selection of rustic campsites, some walk-in access only.
There was trash around my site which I picked up. The fire pit was filled to the brim with ashes. Otherwise, it was a pleasant location.
