Whether you’re a seasoned RVer with a large camper, a family looking for a memorable summer getaway, or a solo adventurer yearning for tranquility, Bolar Mountain promises an experience that will leave you wanting to return again and again.
Imagine waking up to crisp mountain air, surrounded by lush forests, with the shimmering waters of Lake Moomaw just steps away. This isn't just a dream; it's the reality at Bolar Mountain. Visitors consistently praise the perfect weather, especially in early August, noting the much cooler temperatures in the mountains compared to the Virginia lowlands, making it an ideal summer retreat. The natural beauty of the water and scenery is frequently highlighted, and the park facilities are diligently cared for, ensuring a pleasant and comfortable stay for all. Many have raved about the amazing beach access, with options to find more secluded spots if you prefer a quieter experience. The lake itself, while popular, isn't overly crowded with boats, allowing for peaceful enjoyment of the water.
As local Virginians, we understand the desire for both convenience and captivating natural beauty when planning a trip. Bolar Mountain Recreation Area delivers on both fronts, offering a well-maintained environment with a wealth of activities right at your fingertips. This article will guide you through everything you need to know about Bolar Mountain, from its precise location and accessibility to the diverse services, standout features, and contact information, illustrating why it’s a perfect fit for your next Virginia outdoor escape.
Bolar Mountain Recreation Area is conveniently located at 756 Twin Ridge Dr, Warm Springs, VA 24484, USA. This prime address places it on the northern end of Lake Moomaw, a magnificent man-made lake covering 2,530 acres along the Jackson River, within the sprawling George Washington and Jefferson National Forest. The lake boasts an average depth of 80 feet and an impressive 43 miles of wooded shoreline, providing a vast natural playground.
Accessing Bolar Mountain Recreation Area is relatively straightforward, though it’s wise to plan your route, as cell service in this beautiful mountain region can be limited or nonexistent – a welcome opportunity for many to truly disconnect! From Covington, for instance, you would typically take Route 220 North to Highway 39, then turn left onto Highway 39. From there, you'd turn left onto Highway 600 (Bolars Draft Road) and follow it for about 7.5 miles before turning right onto Twin Ridge Drive, which leads to the campgrounds. It's important to note that GPS systems sometimes suggest routes via Richardson Gorge Road, especially when towing; this route is generally not recommended due to being a narrow dirt road with steep, soft edges where accidents have occurred. Always check official directions or call ahead if unsure.
The recreation area is part of the Warm Springs Ranger District, situated approximately two hours north of Roanoke, Virginia. Its elevation of around 1,614 feet ensures cooler temperatures, making it a particularly attractive destination during the warmer summer months. While it feels wonderfully remote, the nearby town of Warm Springs offers amenities like restaurants, shopping, and the Historical Society for Bath County, providing convenient access to essentials and local culture if needed.
Bolar Mountain Recreation Area offers a comprehensive range of services designed to make your camping experience as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. The recreation area features four distinct campgrounds: Sugar Ridge, Campground 1, Campground 2, and Campground 3. This variety ensures there's a site type to suit different preferences, from tent campers to those with larger RVs.
What truly sets Bolar Mountain Recreation Area apart are its exceptional features and natural highlights, making it a premier destination for Virginians seeking outdoor recreation:
As a national forest recreation area, Bolar Mountain Recreation Area primarily operates through standard fees, which range from $16 to $85 per night for individual campsites, depending on amenities like electric and water hookups, and the specific campground. Group sites may have different rates, around $165 per night. Day use fees are typically around $5. Reservations can be made up to six months in advance through Recreation.gov, and it's advisable to book at least two days ahead of your arrival, especially for larger campers or during peak season, as the best sites fill up quickly.
While specific seasonal promotions are not typically advertised directly by the campground, visitors holding federal interagency passes (such as the America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass, Senior Pass, Access Pass, etc.) may be eligible for discounts on camping fees. It's always recommended to inquire about any applicable discounts or special rates when making your reservation or contacting the campground directly. Keep an eye on the Recreation.gov website for any potential seasonal deals or updated pricing information.

One of my favorite camp grounds, make sure to check site sizes when making reservations for large campers
Mar 24, 2025 · kylie jonesThis was a wonderful spot for an early August getaway. Weather was perfect, much cooler I the mountains but not chilly. Water and scenery was beautiful. Park facilities are well cared for. We hit up the beach which was amazing, plus there is access outside the public area if you want to avoid other people completely. Lake itself not that crowded with boats etc. We will definitly visit again.
Aug 03, 2021 · Zachary HottelThis is my new favorite camp site. I cant say enough about the place. The sites are well maintained and spacious. The camp hosts are very friendly and helpful. The scenery looks like heaven. The lake is a great place to hike and swim right from your site(if it's a site on the water). I cant wait to go back.
