The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) holds a special place in the hearts of Minnesotans, representing the purest form of our state’s incredible natural heritage. Nestled deep within this million-acre sanctuary is BWCA Campsite #2096, a highly sought-after destination renowned for its breathtaking proximity to the magnificent Basswood Falls. For local users seeking a truly unforgettable paddle-in experience—one that offers profound solitude, unparalleled scenery, and the distinctive soundtrack of rushing water—this campsite is a premier choice. This article provides a comprehensive overview of this specific site, guiding you through its location, accessibility, and unique features, all from a local's perspective on planning an exceptional North Woods adventure.
Campsite #2096 is not your typical drive-up campground; it is a quintessential wilderness experience. Located within the heart of the BWCAW, this site is situated along the historic Basswood River, a major waterway that forms part of the Minnesota/Ontario border and connects large sections of the wilderness. Specifically, the site is positioned near the famed Basswood Falls, which means access requires a commitment to paddle and portage, immediately ensuring a quiet, low-traffic experience compared to many other spots.
While the campsite's official mailing address is listed as the nearest major outfitting town, Ely, MN 55731, USA, be aware that you cannot drive to the campsite itself. Ely serves as a crucial gateway for obtaining permits, outfitting gear, and arranging tow services. Access to the general Basswood Falls area often begins at a regulated BWCAW Entry Point, such as Fall Lake (Entry Point 24) or Mudro Lake (Entry Point 23), depending on your chosen route and itinerary. The path to Campsite #2096 is intentionally challenging; as noted in user reviews, the site is "only accessible by portage." This requirement screens for those who are prepared for a true wilderness trek, ensuring the site retains its pristine and secluded character. The approach involves paddling across a series of interconnected lakes and rivers, punctuated by the necessary portages—the carrying of all gear and canoes overland to bypass rapids or connect waterways. This effort is "well worth the short hike in for an unbeatable view of Basswood Falls," making the campsite a rewarding prize for the dedicated paddler.
Services at BWCA Campsite #2096 are reflective of its deep-wilderness setting. These are not amenities in the traditional sense, but the minimal, essential provisions the U.S. Forest Service provides to uphold the 'Leave No Trace' wilderness ethic while ensuring a manageable visit. All other needs, from potable water to shelter, must be self-supplied by the visitor.
The true value of Campsite #2096 lies in its singular features and highlights, which are repeatedly praised by those who make the journey. These elements combine to create a deeply memorable and distinctly Minnesotan camping experience.
For all matters related to permits, rules, regulations, and official information concerning BWCA Campsite #2096 and the surrounding area, users must contact the managing governmental body, the U.S. Forest Service, through the local Ranger District.

One of the coolest and most unique sites I've been to in the BWCA! Only accessible by portage, it's well worth the short hike in for an unbeatable view of Basswood Falls. Large open space for gathering, trees for hammocks, and plenty of rock outcropping. You'll hear the falls all night long, especially with high water (August 2025). There's even a rock to jump into the water facing the falls!
Aug 04, 2025 · Jared JonesThis site is amazing. It's small, so can't accommodate a large group, but super cool! Right next to the water, for a peaceful night sleep, and FISHING!
