Camp Reggae About

For Tennessee locals seeking a truly unique and "magical" outdoor experience, Camp Reggae in Turtletown, TN, stands out as a vibrant and welcoming destination. This isn't just a campground; it's a "Paradise in the mountains," infused with "Jamaican vibes" and renowned for its friendly atmosphere. If you're looking to disconnect from the ordinary and immerse yourself in good music, good people, and the serene beauty of the Appalachian forest, Camp Reggae offers an unforgettable escape right here in your home state.

The reviews from enthusiastic visitors speak volumes about the special energy of this place. One camper declared it "Pure magic!" praising the "Jamaican vibes all over" and noting that "there is something special in this forest." Another long-time attendee expressed profound attachment, calling it "one of the most magical places you can go, such good vibes, and even better people." They added, "It's truly a Paradise in the mountains. Me and my friends from high school came several years in a row. Each time we brought more people. Haven't been in years, but I WILL BE BACK. CAMP REGGAE!!!!!" These heartfelt testimonials underscore the strong sense of community, the positive atmosphere, and the lasting impression Camp Reggae leaves on its visitors.

Beyond being a traditional camping spot, Camp Reggae is notably the home of a family-friendly, bi-annual Camp Reggae Festival, which brings together live music, authentic Jamaican food, drum circles, and a host of other activities. This dual identity as both a peaceful natural retreat and a vibrant cultural hub makes it a truly distinctive gem for Tennessee residents looking for an outdoor experience with a unique rhythm and soul.

Location and Accessibility

Camp Reggae is wonderfully situated at 204 Calvender Rd, Turtletown, TN 37391, USA, deep within the scenic beauty of the Cherokee National Forest. This location places it in a tranquil, forested setting in southeastern Tennessee, offering a genuine mountain escape that feels far removed from the hustle and bustle of city life, while still being accessible.

The campground is nestled high in the hills of Turtletown, bordering North Carolina and Georgia, which makes it a central point for residents in the tri-state area. While the address is specific, some previous reviews on platforms like Hipcamp (where it's listed as "Camp Reggae Getaway") mention the access road can be a dirt road and may be challenging for some vehicles or trailers, with one review noting an "inaccessible dirt road" for a jeep pulling a trailer and GPS inaccuracies. However, more recent information associated with the festival suggests that for larger buses or motorhomes, contact should be made in advance to make plans for arrival and parking, indicating that it is possible to accommodate various vehicle sizes with proper guidance. It's advisable for guests to confirm road conditions and directions directly with the hosts before their visit, especially if traveling in a large RV or during inclement weather.

Despite its secluded feel, Camp Reggae is well-positioned for exploring the natural wonders of the region. A trail runs through the mountains nearby, lined with rhododendrons and alongside a running stream. Turtletown Falls and the renowned Ocoee River (famous for whitewater rafting) are also close by, offering ample opportunities for hiking, swimming, and various water sports. This combination of peaceful seclusion and proximity to outdoor adventure makes Camp Reggae a truly appealing destination for Tennessee locals seeking to explore their state's natural beauty.

  • Small Glamping Cabin: For those seeking more comfort, a "small cabin for glamping" is available, offering a step up from traditional tent camping.
  • Kitchen Access and Food Provision: A "kitchen is here," and importantly, "food can be provided," indicating either shared kitchen facilities or catering options, particularly notable during festival times. During the festival, hot coffee and breakfast are available for purchase every morning, along with Jamaican cuisine throughout the day and evening.
  • Restrooms and Showers: There are "several 'brick and mortar' unisex bathrooms on site with 1 shower and hot water," providing essential facilities for guests, though primitive camping is still encouraged.

  • Community Atmosphere: The emphasis on "good vibes" and "even better people" cultivated by the hosts, Sonia and Tony Allen (of Natti Love Joys fame), creates a strong sense of community and welcoming environment.
  • On-site Activities (especially during festivals): During the Camp Reggae Festival, the offerings expand to include live music (reggae, rock, blues, jazz, country, and more), drum circles, soccer, children's activities, creek-wading, dancing, hula-hooping, and fire-twirling, providing a packed schedule of entertainment.
  • Vendors (during festivals): Food, clothing, and craft vendors (including authentic Jamaican food and vegan specialties by Chef Mayra) are present during the festival, enhancing the cultural experience.

The services at Camp Reggae are geared towards creating a vibrant, communal, and comfortable outdoor experience, especially amplified during its renowned festivals.

  • Large Camping Space & Glamping Cabin: The availability of "a lot of camping space" means plenty of room for various setups, and the option of a "small cabin for glamping" caters to those desiring more comfort and amenities.

  • "Leave No Trace" Ethos (especially during festivals): The festival operates as a "Leave No Trace" event, promoting responsible outdoor practices and preserving the natural beauty of the 10-acre plot of forest.
  • Variety of Entertainment (Festival-specific): Beyond music, festivals include a healing and green field area, body and soul tent, spoken word area, workshops, market stalls, children's activities, soccer, and fire-twirling, ensuring diverse entertainment.

These features collectively create a vibrant, inclusive, and naturally beautiful destination that offers far more than a typical camping experience.

Promotions or Special Offers

For Camp Reggae, which functions both as a unique campground and the host of a major bi-annual festival, "promotions" and "special offers" are primarily structured around its event-based nature and its distinct booking model. Direct, conventional discounts like "buy one night, get one free" are less common outside of festival ticketing.

  • Festival Ticket Packages: The primary "offer" comes through its Memorial Day Weekend Camp Reggae Festival. Tickets are sold online and include access to a weekend packed full of entertainment, camping, and cultural experiences for a set fee (e.g., $175 for the 2025 Memorial Day Weekend festival). This package offers significant value considering the multi-day event and included activities.
  • Children's Entry (Festival): During the festival, children aged 12 and under often get in FREE with a supervised parent, making it a very family-friendly option. Children over 12 require the standard entry fee.
  • Group Bookings (Implied): While not explicitly advertised as a discount, the review mentioning "Each time we brought more people" suggests that the experience is highly conducive to group trips, and inquiries for larger groups might yield specific arrangements or considerations.
  • Early Bird Pricing (Festival): For their bi-annual festivals, it's common for organizers to offer "Early Bird" ticket pricing for a limited time before the event, encouraging advance bookings with a lower price point. Interested individuals should monitor their official website or social media channels for such announcements.

Given the specialized nature of Camp Reggae, the best way to find out about current festival pricing, general camping rates (when available), or any specific package deals is to contact them directly or visit their official website related to the Natti Love Joys band, who are the hosts and organizers.

I encourage you to check it out. What a terrific & positive endeavor, a labor of love it is! Loving kindness to a beat. One love for sure. I've cleared my calendar for next year's, & I can't wait. (Good is never wasted. Good always bears good, to ourselves & to others. This is a perfect example ....) Come join me!

1st timers as of Fri Aug 17th. Smaller crowd due to rain but quality in all the souls we encountered. Some areas could have been cleaned up better (some leftovers at sites from previous campers), but over all relaxing, refreshing, rejuvenating! Will be back!
