Introduction / Overview
For Vermonters who cherish the state's natural beauty and the tranquility of its waterways, the Connecticut River Paddlers Campsite in Thetford offers a unique and essential recreational opportunity. This is not a typical drive-up campground; rather, it is a dedicated, primitive, paddle-in site that forms a vital link in the broader Connecticut River Paddlers Trail, a vast network of river access points and simple campsites stretching hundreds of miles. This specific location serves as a crucial stopover for non-motorized boat enthusiasts—canoers, kayakers, and stand-up paddleboarders—who are embarking on multi-day journeys along New England's longest river.
The campsite embodies a true "Leave No Trace" ethic, offering a secluded experience where the primary goal is immersion in the natural environment. As a key resource for the local paddling community, it provides a safe and designated place for an overnight stay where, historically, riverbanks have been mostly privately owned. The establishment of this and other similar sites is a testament to the collaborative efforts of conservation groups like the Upper Valley Land Trust (UVLT) and local landowners who generously provide access. It is a treasured, though perhaps less-advertised, resource that supports the mission of encouraging sustainable, long-distance river travel right here in Vermont’s Upper Valley region.

It is positioned to be a convenient overnight stop between other points on the Paddlers Trail, ensuring that paddlers can comfortably cover manageable distances each day without the stress of finding an unsanctioned overnight spot. The Thetford location is also situated roughly midway between major towns like Norwich/Hanover and Bradford, making it a perfectly placed sanctuary on a multi-day paddle. The commitment to water-only access is a deliberate choice by the park's stewards to preserve the primitive nature of the experience and to respect the surrounding private and conserved land.

Sometimes, I hesitate when adding a place to Google Maps. This is one of those times. This is a popular secret swimming spot with locals and a great place to hang out along the Connecticut River. These are both secondary uses to this campsite, which is part of the Connecticut River Paddlers Trail. I really love the Connecticut River, however, and encouraging overnight trips with paddlers is important to the success of this resource. So use this campsite (and others that I may add in the coming years) responsibly. Practice "Leave No Trace" ethics. Enjoy.
