Introduction / Overview
For New Yorkers in search of a deep, yet accessible, wilderness camping experience, the Agatha A. Durland Scout Reservation in Putnam Valley, NY, stands as a premier destination. Encompassing 1,400 acres of largely undeveloped deciduous forest, this extensive property offers a true escape into the Hudson Valley’s natural beauty. Bordering the expansive Clarence Fahnestock State Park, Durland is more than just a campground; it’s a dedicated outdoor education and recreation center that preserves a significant piece of New York’s natural heritage.
Owned and operated by the Greater Hudson Valley Council, Scouting America, the reservation is primarily dedicated to Scouting units. However, it offers a robust opportunity for structured groups—including organized youth groups, family camping, and adult hiking teams—to utilize its facilities and extensive acreage during the non-summer months (typically September through June). Its primary commitment is to providing a rugged, yet safe, environment for traditional camping, backpacking, and skills training. The atmosphere is centered on self-reliance, respect for nature, and group adventure, attracting local users who appreciate an active and immersive outdoor setting. The presence of a dedicated Campmaster, lauded in local reviews, ensures helpful service and on-site expertise, even in the heart of winter.
This facility appeals to a specific New York demographic: those who favor flat, open camping grounds, enjoy rigorous hiking, and appreciate the rustic charm of cabin or lean-to accommodations over the full amenities of a commercial RV park. It’s a haven for residents seeking to disconnect and test their outdoor skills in a protected, expansive wilderness tract.
Location and Accessibility
Durland Scout Reservation is uniquely positioned in the Hudson Valley at C585+FW, Putnam Valley, NY 10579, USA. Its address places it squarely in Putnam County, a highly desirable and naturally rich area of the state, just east of the Hudson River.
The accessibility of Durland is a key benefit for New York locals. It is a manageable drive from the New York City metropolitan area, as well as Westchester, Dutchess, and Orange counties. Its proximity to major roadways, while requiring some navigation of local roads to reach the final, secluded destination, makes it a convenient weekend getaway. A crucial logistical note for local users is that the main route to the camp may include segments of the Taconic State Parkway, which restricts certain vehicles like trucks and trailers. Visitors should consult maps or the official website for alternate, non-parkway routes if traveling with large equipment.
Geographically, the reservation’s border with the 14,000-acre Clarence Fahnestock State Park is a massive draw. This connection allows visitors to leverage the massive trail system of both properties, including a segment of the world-famous Appalachian Trail, which is directly accessible from the area. This location ensures that campers are immersed in a vast, "forever wild" landscape, just a short drive from the busiest parts of the tri-state region.

Amazing service from camp master Mike. Kids had a great time snowball fighting and even tried the camp’s geocaching activity. I would recommend having activities planned for your age group but my kids (ages 9-16) had fun.
Feb 23, 2025 · JLee RodriguezThere are many hiking trails and very good flat camping grounds. You can also backpack 3 miles or so to a camp ground, set camp for the night and head back in the morning.
Dec 17, 2024 · Christian WilliamsonBest space for Boy and Girl Scout camping. 1400 acres next to Fahnstock Park. New cabins, archery, orienteering, geocaching , well mark 2-3-5-10k trails. Canoes, boats, well stocked fishing. With the disappearing availability of Scout Camps, Durland stands out.
