Among the myriad of natural havens scattered across the state, the Northwoods region stands out for its serene beauty and abundant opportunities for relaxation and adventure. Nestled within this idyllic setting, Foxfire Campground in Woodruff offers a promising escape for those seeking a tranquil and scenic camping experience.

Foxfire Campground has garnered attention for its picturesque lake views and well-appointed campsites, aiming to provide a comfortable and enjoyable stay for all its guests. Many visitors appreciate the generous space provided at each site, accommodating various camping setups from large tents to substantial campers, alongside ample room for vehicles. The availability of watercraft rentals and dedicated areas for swimming and fishing further enhance the appeal, making it a versatile choice for families and individuals eager to engage with the natural environment.

However, like any popular destination, experiences can vary. While some campers rave about the "prettiest Lakes I've ever seen" and the peaceful atmosphere, others have noted concerns regarding privacy and occasional issues with staff availability. This article aims to provide a comprehensive and factual overview of Foxfire Campground, drawing directly from available public information and customer insights. We'll delve into its prime location, the services and features it offers, and highlight key aspects to consider, ensuring Wisconsin locals can make an informed decision for their next Northwoods adventure.

Location and Accessibility

Foxfire Campground is strategically located at 11200 Fox Fire Rd, Woodruff, WI 54568, USA. Woodruff is a prominent town in the heart of Wisconsin’s legendary Northwoods, forming part of the "Minocqua-Arbor Vitae-Woodruff" area, which is a major tourism hub. This region is renowned for its vast number of lakes, extensive trail systems, and a quintessential wilderness charm that draws visitors year-round for fishing, boating, hiking, biking, snowmobiling, and more.

The campground's address on "Fox Fire Rd" suggests a location slightly off the main thoroughfares, likely leading to a more secluded and natural setting. Woodruff is easily accessible via major state highways like US-51, which runs north-south through Wisconsin, making the drive relatively straightforward for campers traveling from various parts of the state. Once you turn onto Fox Fire Road, the path to the campground should be well-marked, typical for established recreational facilities. This ease of access, combined with its Northwoods location, means campers can quickly transition from the road to the tranquility of nature. Its proximity to Woodruff also provides convenient access to local amenities such as grocery stores, gas stations, bait shops, restaurants, and medical services, ensuring that campers have everything they need close at hand during their stay.

Services Offered

Foxfire Campground strives to provide a comfortable and convenient camping experience by offering a variety of services designed to meet the needs of its guests.

  • Spacious Campsites: A key service highlighted by visitors is the generous size of the campsites. Campers appreciate "Plenty of space in the sites for a camper," with ample room for large tents, easy-ups over picnic tables, and additional parking for vehicles like SUVs.
  • Site Amenities: Each individual campsite is equipped with essential amenities including a "fire ring and a picnic table," allowing campers to enjoy outdoor cooking and dining experiences directly at their site.
  • Watercraft Rentals: For guests who do not own their own water equipment, the campground offers "rowboats and paddleboards and kayaks for rent." This is a significant convenience, allowing everyone to enjoy the peaceful lake.
  • Dedicated Piers: The campground features "separate piers for fishing and swimming." This distinction helps manage different lake activities, ensuring a safer and more enjoyable experience for both anglers and swimmers.
  • Swimming Area: There is a designated "swimming area" that is described as "very sandy and the sand goes far out and it's a lot of fun!" This provides a pleasant and safe place for campers to cool off and play in the water.
  • Office/Check-in Services: An office or check-in point is present, presumably for welcoming guests and handling reservations. However, one review noted that "staff were gone" at check-out on a Sunday, impacting key returns.

While not explicitly detailed, standard campground services like waste disposal facilities and possibly basic restroom/shower access are usually part of a typical campground operation. Guests should confirm these directly with the campground if they are essential for their stay.

Features / Highlights

Foxfire Campground is distinguished by several appealing features that contribute to its overall charm and recreational value, making it an attractive destination in the Northwoods.

  • Beautiful, Peaceful Lake: A consistently praised highlight is the lake itself, described as "one of the prettiest Lakes I've ever seen." Its small size means "it's not busy and very peaceful," which is a significant draw for campers seeking tranquility and a serene natural setting.
  • Scenic Lake Views (from select sites): Many sites, particularly those "down by the lake," offer undeniably "pretty" views. For those who prioritize a beautiful vista, these sites are a major highlight. However, it's worth noting that some lakeside sites might have their views partially obstructed by boat storage or foot traffic, as per one review.
  • Sandy Swimming Beach: The "very sandy" swimming area where "the sand goes far out" provides a fantastic and fun place for families and individuals to enjoy the water. The quality of the beach is a strong positive feature for water enthusiasts.
  • Access to Water Activities: Beyond rentals, the lake itself offers excellent opportunities for various water activities like fishing, paddling, and swimming directly from the campground's dedicated piers and beach.
  • Spacious Campsites: The generous size of individual sites, allowing for large campers, tents, and extra parking, is a practical highlight that enhances comfort and flexibility for diverse camping setups.
  • Proximity to Northwoods Attractions: Situated in Woodruff, the campground benefits from its location in a major tourism hub. This means easy access to a vast network of biking and hiking trails, numerous other lakes, quaint Northwoods towns, and seasonal events and attractions.
  • Fire Rings and Picnic Tables: The presence of a fire ring and picnic table at each site offers essential elements for traditional camping enjoyment, from campfire cooking to outdoor meals.

We love Foxfire Campground! Plenty of space in the sites for a camper. We have a very large tent and use an easy up over the picnic table and have plenty of extra room for parking our SUV. Each site has a fire ring and a picnic table. If you get a site down by the lake you will definitely not be disappointed with the view. It is one of the prettiest Lakes I've ever seen and it's a small lake so it's not busy and very peaceful. They have rowboats and paddle boards and kayaks for rent if you do not have your own and they have separate piers for fishing and swimming. The swimming area is very sandy and the sand goes far out and it's a lot of fun!

We stayed at a Lakeside site (98) and were so disappointed. The boat rental and boat storage for the seasonal folks were directly in front of our site. Saying this site has a lake view is a massive stretch. We had people walking in our campsite all weekend to get their boats. People were also walking through our site to get to the lake. For a north woods campground, you get absolutely no privacy. We also went into the office at check out on Sunday and the staff were gone. Someone rented the cabin and had no clue where to return the keys. Overall, it was a very disappointing experience.

We stayed at the cabin- which seemed newly built and was perfect. could easily fit more than 4 people in there if you brought more air mattresses with. The swimming area and playground was disappointing. Theres 1 shower stall- which is very nice once inside, but the coin operation is outside of the stall, so if you run out of time you have to get dressed to put more money back in. There also is only a curtain, not a door, so it was pretty uncomfortable to shower/get dressed in there. Otherwise a very quiet campground- there was a TON of people there and we didn't hear anyone else. Would definitely come back to use the cabin.

Nice lakeside site. We have a 30ft travel trailer. We had site 93. It was close to the lake and shaded. But that's probably the only lake site we would stay in. The others were pretty short. 93 is plenty deep but we had to mess around to get the front low enough to be level. But, even with that we would stay in that site again.

Fox fire is a great campground. Nice size spots, easy to get to, near a private lake for fishing, swimming, and kayaking. We always come back to this campground when we go north, very convenient near all the Northwoods experiences.
