Indian Mound Campground is ideally situated in Lake Tomahawk, WI 54539, USA, placing it in the heart of Wisconsin's renowned Northwoods region, specifically within Oneida County. This location offers direct access to the beautiful Lake Tomahawk, a part of the expansive Minocqua Chain of Lakes, providing ample opportunities for fishing, boating, and swimming. The campground's position within a state forest ensures a rustic, natural environment that feels removed from urban development, yet it remains reasonably accessible. While the exact road names leading to the campground aren't specified in the general address, state forest campgrounds in this region are typically accessed via well-maintained gravel or dirt roads that are navigable by most vehicles and RVs (though larger rigs should always verify specific road conditions). Lake Tomahawk, the nearby town, offers essential amenities and services, including local shops and eateries, ensuring that campers can easily resupply or enjoy a meal out without having to travel far. This balance of secluded natural beauty with convenient access to local towns makes Indian Mound Campground an excellent choice for Wisconsinites seeking both peace and practicality in their camping adventures. The ease of getting to the lake and exploring the surrounding Northwoods truly enhances the appeal of this location.
As a state forest campground in Wisconsin, Indian Mound Campground operates under the guidelines of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR). As such, it typically does not offer commercial "promotions" or complex discount packages seen at private campgrounds. Its primary appeal lies in its natural, rustic experience at an affordable state-managed rate. Fees are usually posted at the campground entrance and are subject to change. For state park and forest properties in Wisconsin, a valid Wisconsin State Park System vehicle admission sticker is required for vehicle entry, which can be purchased annually or daily. The camping fees themselves are generally a flat nightly rate per site. Since Indian Mound Campground is described as primarily "first-come, first-served," there are no advance reservation discounts. The value here comes from direct access to a beautiful lake and a peaceful, well-maintained rustic setting at a state-managed price point. For the most current fee schedule, vehicle admission requirements, and any updates regarding operations, it is always recommended to consult the official Wisconsin DNR website specifically for Indian Mound Campground or the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest area.

Stayed on site 35. Beautiful camp site. If you can get a spot on the lake, DO IT. The sunset is beautiful!! We liked that it’s rustic; there’s clean latrines with stalls. Water pump takes a minute to get the water out. Friendly camp neighbors; the neighbors we had were very conscious of their generator use so we had no complaints there. There’s a small beach for swimming for those people without a lake site. The water was clear and cold but very refreshing. Lots of people with RVs and boats. We had a van to sleep in. Our spot could have probably fit one tent. Not sure if the walk to sites are better for multiple tents.
Jun 05, 2021 · Ismene PotakisI left a 1 star review because I left a sentimental t-shirt at the beach for 30 minutes, come back, and it's gone. If there is a possibility there's a loss and found or it gets returned, I will delete the review. Otherwise, I was disappointed with my first time visit.
Sep 15, 2024 · Bo SchoefflingGreat place to get away. Beautiful nature, huge sites. Very small beach. No shower's or electric. Minocqua and plenty of hiking trails within minutes. Will come back next year
May 29, 2023 · Kimberly GarlieThis is a nice camping area with boat launch and huge campsites. Reserve early to get a site next to the water! We didn't see any real hiking trails but there's little traffic and plenty of road to walk. Tables and seating near the boat launch to sit and watch the sunrise/ sunset near the water.
Sep 01, 2022 · Karethra BexWe had walk-in site number 25, wow, beautiful view. It it probably 50 steps or so up to the campsite. But worth it for us. Plenty of room for a large tent, or two. It is right next to a pretty steep hill, almost too steep to hike down to the water.
