For Minnesota residents looking to explore the rugged, breathtaking beauty of the North Shore and the remote wilderness of Isle Royale National Park, the Grand Portage Marina and RV Campground offers a unique and unparalleled logistical advantage. Located deep in the state's northeastern corner, this RV park and campground, operated by the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, is strategically positioned right on the shores of Lake Superior and adjacent to the Grand Portage Marina. While many choose it for its convenience, especially as the closest mainland launch point for the Isle Royale ferries, the campground is also a prime base camp for exploring local attractions like the Grand Portage National Monument and the majestic High Falls at Grand Portage State Park.
The facility provides both RV and tent camping options, designed to place you right in the heart of the North Shore experience. RV campers can benefit from sites offering essential hookups, while all guests have access to the amenities housed in the nearby comfort station. Visitors consistently note that the stunning, unobstructed views of Lake Superior and the bustling marina environment are the campground's defining and most memorable attributes. Whether you are an experienced RVer, a tent camper, or a boater looking for a temporary slip, Grand Portage offers a unique vantage point on this famously remote stretch of Minnesota's coastline.
It is worth noting that current and past visitors have pointed to a need for improved maintenance and enhanced communication, particularly regarding reservations, as the park’s booking is handled exclusively over the phone without an online system. Prospective guests should prepare for a dedicated effort to secure a reservation and recognize that the physical facilities, while functional, may present an older or more rustic camping experience. However, its exceptional location often makes these efforts worthwhile for those prioritizing proximity to major natural attractions.
Grand Portage Marina and RV Campground is situated in the far northeastern corner of Minnesota, a truly remote and unspoiled part of the state. Its physical address places it directly at the heart of the Grand Portage community, right on Lake Superior. The location is easily accessible via Scenic Highway 61, the iconic North Shore roadway. This highway connects the area to the rest of the North Shore, running southwest toward Grand Marais and Duluth, and northeast toward the Canadian border.
The most significant accessibility advantage of this RV park is its proximity to the Hat Point Marina, which serves as the departure point for the Sea Hunter III and Voyageur II ferries to Isle Royale National Park. For Minnesotans planning an expedition to the remote island park, the campground is the most logical and convenient staging area, effectively making it just minutes from the Isle Royale departure point. This convenience eliminates the need for long-distance travel on the morning of a ferry departure, allowing for a relaxed start to an otherwise ambitious wilderness adventure.
Beyond Isle Royale access, the campground's location on the Grand Portage Reservation places it near a number of other local treasures. It is just a short drive from the historic Grand Portage National Monument, which preserves the history of the North West Company fur trade, and Grand Portage State Park, home to High Falls, Minnesota's tallest waterfall on the Pigeon River, which forms the U.S.–Canada border. This centralized positioning makes the RV park an excellent hub for a multi-day itinerary focused on the region's natural and historical highlights.
The RV Park and Marina offer a variety of services designed to support travelers and provide a comfortable base for North Shore exploration.
The Grand Portage Marina and RV Campground is distinguished by several key features that appeal directly to the Minnesota adventurer.

***Note for Reservations: Given the lack of an online booking system and reported communication difficulties, callers are strongly advised to be persistent and call during business hours well in advance of their planned trip, especially during the peak summer season.
For locals across Minnesota, the Grand Portage Marina and RV Campground represents a highly suitable base for experiencing the state's rugged, far-north territory. It provides a rare combination of practical convenience and sublime natural beauty. As the closest vehicle-accessible departure point for the Isle Royale ferry, it effectively shortens the already extensive journey to one of America's most remote National Parks, saving valuable travel time and minimizing pre-trip stress. Furthermore, its location anchors you directly to the scenic and historic corridor of Highway 61, allowing for easy day trips to major state attractions like the High Falls and the Grand Portage National Monument.
While guests should be prepared for a simpler, less polished camping experience, potentially facing some maintenance issues or communication hurdles, the view and the unparalleled access to the region’s best features make it an essential stop. It allows Minnesota residents to fully immerse themselves in the distinct culture and challenging wilderness of the North Shore, transforming a distant destination into an accessible, multi-day adventure. In short, if your goal is to explore the natural grandeur where Minnesota meets Canada and Lake Superior, Grand Portage Marina and RV Campground offers a location that simply cannot be beaten.

RV Campground—Overall, not a great experience. ☎️ Communication • Extremely difficult to make a reservation or reach anyone. • I called over three different days, multiple times, and only got through right before we were about to book elsewhere. •No online booking system is available, which would make things much easier. 🚿 Showers & Bathrooms • Facilities were dirty and felt unsanitary. • My husband found bandaids and hair scattered around the showers. In the women’s bathroom, there was a foul odor and grime smeared on the walls. • Showers were only lukewarm, not hot. •Overall, you wanted to get in and out as quickly as possible. ⛺️ Campsites • Sites were open with a nice view of the water. • Water and electric hookups available. • Fire pits were poorly maintained. Ours looked like it had been run over. • Check-in is at the Marina office, but signage and wayfinding were unclear. 📍 Location • This is the campground’s biggest strength. It’s one of the few options close to Grand Portage, making it convenient for tours to Isle Royale National Park just minutes away. ✨ Overall Impression While the location is excellent, the poor communication and unsanitary facilities left a negative impression. The campground feels neglected, and unfortunately, I cannot recommend it.
Sep 28, 2025 · Jen BallReally nice place. Tent sites have no shoulder room between sites but the view and short walk to the bathhouse makes up for it. Highly recommend making a reservation.
Sep 27, 2025 · AaronIt's a beautiful spot on Lake Superior with nice spacious and quiet campsites and a marina. 3 miles from the nearby port to catch a ferry to Isle Royale National Park. The restrooms and store are a bit lackluster as far as the upkeep and amenities but there is a casino nearby which we didn't get a chance to checkout yet. I would stay again.
Aug 01, 2025 · Jamie MeyerNo complaints except for the dryer is broken. Luckily, some campers caught me on my way in to tip me off and tell me about a laundry facility close by that doesn't show up in a map search. Nice view and quiet!
Jul 06, 2025 · Wendi White (Kaeblee)Tent camping exposed on hill. No shade. Nice view, but you'll hear everything from the Marina, including seagulls. Bathroom dirty and mutual prep shower area.
