As a "first come first serve" campground, it provides a unique opportunity to secure a spot without needing advance reservations, though getting there "early enough" is advised due to its popularity. The services prioritize essential comforts and accessibility within a natural park setting.
Lewis Mountain Campground boasts several key features and highlights that contribute to its charm and popularity, making it an excellent choice for a wide variety of campers in Virginia:
As a campground operated within Shenandoah National Park and managed by the National Park Service (NPS) or its concessionaires, Lewis Mountain Campground primarily operates on a fixed fee structure rather than offering frequent, dynamic promotions or discounts in the commercial sense. Its value is inherent in its prime location, well-maintained facilities, and access to the national park's natural wonders.
However, there are a few standard "offers" or considerations that can provide value:
For the most accurate and up-to-date pricing (campsites are generally around $30 per night, cabins vary) and any specific operational details related to fees, pass discounts, or cabin rental rates, prospective campers should consult the official Shenandoah National Park website or contact the campground directly. They will also provide information on what's included in the fee (e.g., picnic table, fire pit, access to restrooms and potable water) versus what has an additional cost (e.g., showers, firewood).
For all inquiries regarding Lewis Mountain Campground, including information on site availability (given its first-come, first-serve nature), cabin rentals, or details about park regulations and amenities, you can reach out directly using the following contact information:
Address: Skyline Dr, Stanardsville, VA 22973, USA (located at Milepost 57.5 on Skyline Drive within Shenandoah National Park)
Phone: (540) 999-3500
Mobile Phone: +1 540-999-3500
While the campground is first-come, first-serve for campsites, it's always a good idea to call ahead during peak season to inquire about general availability trends or check the NPS website for any current alerts. For cabin rentals, it is advisable to call well in advance, as these typically require reservations. You can also visit the official National Park Service website for Shenandoah National Park for comprehensive planning resources, current conditions, and safety information.
Lewis Mountain Campground is an exceptionally suitable and highly recommended destination for locals across the Virginia region, offering a quintessential and wonderfully accessible Shenandoah National Park experience. Its unique blend of first-come, first-serve spontaneity, well-maintained facilities, and intimate setting makes it an ideal choice for a wide spectrum of campers.
For Virginians, the convenience of Lewis Mountain Campground's location directly on Skyline Drive is a major draw. It offers easy access to the park's breathtaking scenic overlooks, diverse hiking trails (including the direct "1 mile loop trail"), and abundant wildlife viewing opportunities. This accessibility means less time traveling and more time enjoying the natural beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains, whether for a quick overnight escape or a longer, more immersive stay. The benefit of a "first come first serve" system provides flexibility for spontaneous trips, a refreshing contrast to often fully booked reservation campgrounds.
What truly enhances Lewis Mountain Campground's suitability for locals is its commitment to comfort and service. The consistently praised "clean facilities" including restrooms, coin-operated showers, and laundry make camping feel less rugged and more enjoyable, particularly for families and new campers. The "nicely stocked camp-store" on-site is an invaluable convenience, ensuring that essential supplies and even firewood are readily available. Furthermore, the presence of a "wonderful" and helpful camp host, like George, adds a personal touch and provides invaluable support, making the experience welcoming and stress-free. The option to rent cabins also broadens its appeal, catering to those who desire a slightly more comfortable outdoor stay.
In conclusion, Lewis Mountain Campground offers an authentic yet comfortable camping experience in the heart of Shenandoah National Park. It strikes a perfect balance between rustic charm and essential modern amenities, making it an excellent base for hiking, exploring, or simply unwinding under the stars. If you're a local in Virginia seeking a charming, convenient, and truly enjoyable mountain getaway, Lewis Mountain Campground is undoubtedly a top-tier choice that promises lasting memories and a refreshing connection with nature.

George the camp host was wonderful! He helped me get my spot paid for and my fire wood! Thanks George! Had a great view of the sunrise! It’s a first come first serve, so get there early enough! They also have a nicely stocked camp-store, coin operated shower, laundry and bathrooms. There’s also a 1 mile loop trail that’s great for a quick hike!
Apr 11, 2025 · Kaitlyn NorbergGreat campground with clean facilities and a camp store. We car camped here for a night. Most sites have a pad and then there is overflow parking. Each site also has a picnic table and fire pit. There is a community spigot for water and at the restroom area is a slop sink to do dishes. There are also cabins for rent. There was one shower near the camp store (that I'm aware of) available for use. The staff was kind and helpful. It is first come first serve with a camp host available on site.
Nov 10, 2024 · Kristin KosmidesBeautiful campground and sites..hot showers restrooms camp store and the hosts are the best I have ever seen. Always there..helpful..courteous..always doing something..cleaning sites..monitoring..and the camp host changed my flat tire! So I could go get the tire fixed and changed. He came back to follow up to make sure all was ok..he checks on all campers and explains everything and tells all to see him anytime about any issue..one of the best campgrounds I have ever stayed at..feeling extremely safe.
Apr 27, 2025 · RoxanAwesome campground but the host does not do their job at all. People were yelling, laughing, carrying on very late into the night. Had generators running well after 10pm when they were supposed to be shut off at 7pm. Really wish the host would actually enforce the rules and this would be a much better campground. People suck in general but the campground host sucks too.
Apr 20, 2025 · MJCWe loved our stay here! Beautiful and well-maintained campground. Great access to rest of the park and beautiful views just from the site. The camp store is nice too for last minute items. There’s something for everyone from cabins to campgrounds and some sites are dog friendly. Highly recommend and very affordable!
