The North Shore of Minnesota holds countless treasures for the dedicated outdoor enthusiast, and tucked away in the sprawling beauty of the Superior National Forest is a true gem: the Poplar River Rustic Campground. For Minnesota locals seeking a genuine, secluded escape into the North Woods—away from the crowds of larger, developed sites—this small, rustic haven is the perfect destination. Located just a short drive from the picturesque communities of Tofte and Lutsen, this campground offers a back-to-basics camping experience centered on the sights and sounds of the flowing Poplar River.
This is a small, first-come, first-served site, which contributes to its quiet, exclusive atmosphere. It is the perfect spot for those who appreciate the simple pleasure of a campfire, the natural background noise of a running river, and the chance to disconnect from modern life. Unlike many North Shore campsites, its unique location directly on the Poplar River, rather than a large lake, provides a distinct, calming ambiance and unique recreational opportunities. It’s an authentic slice of the Minnesota wilderness, offering tranquility and the unmistakable scent of pine and fresh water that defines the region.
The term “rustic” here is key; this is not a location with electric hookups, flush toilets, or running water. It’s an opportunity to practice responsible, low-impact camping and fully immerse yourself in the natural environment of the Superior National Forest. Its small size, typically featuring only four total campsites, ensures a truly peaceful retreat, though it also means visitors should plan to arrive early, especially for weekend stays, as this popular spot fills up quickly.
Location and Accessibility: A North Shore Adventure Near Tofte and Lutsen
The Poplar River Rustic Campground is situated within the expansive Superior National Forest, offering a remote feeling while still being accessible from the iconic Minnesota Highway 61. Its physical address is simply Tofte, MN 55615, USA, placing it deep in the heart of the North Shore.
Reaching the campground requires traveling a few miles on well-maintained gravel roads, including a portion of the scenic Honeymoon Trail (Forest Road 164). This off-the-beaten-path location is part of its charm, ensuring only those dedicated to the rustic experience make the journey. While you might feel miles away from civilization, the campground’s proximity to Lutsen, approximately a 30-minute beautiful drive, means you’re never too far from dining, supplies, or the popular activities of the area, like the Lutsen Mountains.
Navigating to the site from Highway 61 in Tofte involves turning north onto County Road 2 (Sawbill Trail) for about 11 miles, then a right onto the Honeymoon Trail (FR 164) for approximately 5.5 miles. If approaching from Lutsen, you can turn north on County Road 4 (Caribou Trail) for about 6 miles, then a right onto the Honeymoon Trail for around 4 miles. The drive itself is a spectacular part of the experience, particularly during the fall color season when the vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows of the Quaking Aspen (locally known as "Popple" or "Poplar") and other trees create a breathtaking natural canopy.
Services Offered (Rustic and Essential)
As a rustic campground, the services provided are minimal, focusing on the essentials required for a comfortable, self-reliant camping trip. This is a free campground, making it an incredible value for the experience offered. Visitors must be prepared to be self-sufficient, especially regarding water and waste management.

Really enjoyed the campground. Stayed in site 1. There was a path down to look at the river. Could hear the river easily from the campsite which was great background noise. I can't speak to the other campsites or campground rules, but from what I could tell, you could fit 2, maybe 3, 6-person tents if you had a big group. Definitely show up early Friday or Thursday if you want to stay here over the weekend.
Oct 02, 2024 · Michael UrvigWe stayed during fall to see the leaves change. 30 mins from Lutsen drive - but the drive is beautiful if you come during fall. The campsites are huge. You can hear a waterfall if you get a spot by the river, & the campsites by the river have steps down to the river. The toilet was a normal camp toilet. We will deff stay again. The only thing that ruined our night was someone ran their generator the entire night & that covered the waterfall noise
Oct 01, 2023 · AlisonLast time I was here, Poplar River was just a creek. Today it’s a river running wild. My neighbor caught a dozen Brook trout within about 20 minutes time by wading out waste deep. I’m not that much of a hard-core fisherman. For campsites, three are pretty good. One is fantastic because it’s across the road. If you don’t mind white noise of a rushing river that sounds like 100 mile an hour winds, this is your place because you certainly won’t hear the neighbors.
Jul 07, 2024 · Stephen - Wigg4 sites total, 3 along the river, and those 3 are very close together which is something I personally don't like. Was kinda annoying watching my neighbor constantly moving around and in/out of his car. The 4th site is last and tucked in on the opposite side of the road more in the woods. I would've liked that one, but it was occupied The sites are small. Can fit 1, maybe 2 tents at each. Campground is free and have picnic tables, fire ring, vault toilet. I came on a Friday and got the last (3rd site along river). Get here early on a Friday if you want a site for the weekend. Or better yet come on a Thursday if you can It is not 30 mins away from lutsen as one reviewer posted. More like 15 mins. She also said the sites were large. No, they definitely are not
Aug 25, 2024 · Lucas PoppBest campsite yet. Tornado shelter/pit toilet. Right on the river. Gorgeous fall colors. Only 4 sites here - first come first serve. Free. Great trout fishing per our camping neighbors.
