Introduction / Overview: Your Rustic Northwoods Basecamp
For Minnesotans seeking the authentic, quiet isolation of the Northwoods, the Temperance River Campground is a well-kept secret nestled deep within the Superior National Forest (SNF). It is crucial for local users to note that this particular campground, the one located on the Sawbill Trail, is distinct from the more developed Temperance River State Park Campground found directly on Highway 61 near Lake Superior. The Sawbill Trail location offers a more primitive, forest-immersed experience, serving as a peaceful staging area for trips into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) or as a secluded getaway for tent and RV campers. It embodies the rustic, back-to-nature camping experience that defines the arrowhead region, situated along the scenic bend of the Temperance River itself. This site is managed by the USDA Forest Service in conjunction with a local concessionaire, ensuring a clean, well-maintained, and quiet atmosphere that campers consistently appreciate.
Location and Accessibility: Deep in the Superior National Forest
The Temperance River Campground is strategically positioned approximately 12 miles inland from the Lake Superior shoreline, accessed directly via a scenic route known as the Sawbill Trail (Cook County Highway 2).
Address: Sawbill Trail, Tofte, MN 55615, USA
This location places it far enough from the heavily trafficked Highway 61 to offer genuine solitude, yet it remains conveniently accessible via a generally well-maintained gravel road.
The remote location ensures that you are truly surrounded by the pine, spruce, and cedar forest, providing the quintessential Minnesota backcountry feel.
Services Offered
The campground operates as a rustic, first-come, first-served facility, designed to provide essential comforts without over-developing the natural setting. It focuses on a simple, clean, and self-sufficient camping experience.
Features / Highlights

Conclusion: Why This Place is Suitable for Locals
For local Minnesotans, the Temperance River Campground on the Sawbill Trail represents the best of the state's federally protected land camping experience. It strikes a perfect balance: offering deep wilderness immersion while remaining easily accessible by vehicle. For those planning a canoeing or kayaking trip, it serves as an indispensable and affordable first-night or last-night stop, minimizing stress before an early start on the BWCAW permits. Crucially, the simple, inexpensive, first-come, first-served nature makes it ideal for spontaneous local adventurers looking to escape the often fully-booked State Parks. Its quiet, river-side setting, combined with necessary rustic amenities and a strong emphasis on bear safety and clean camping, provides a quintessential, low-cost North Shore experience that honors the wild spirit of the Superior National Forest. It's a true, unspoiled retreat for those who cherish the quiet solitude of the Minnesota Arrowhead.
Sawbill Trail, Tofte, MN 55615, USA
The campground was very quiet with a clean outhouse and access to potable water. It was only $18 a night. There are bear warnings around so keep your food in a car, truck or secure hard walled camper and it says to cover your coolers in your vehicle because the bears know what they look like and will try to get to it if the bears see them...There was a little chipmunk that visited every morning, afternoon and evening during my four days I was there and was very cute.
Aug 01, 2022 · Robert PelkeyWe stopped here for a night on the way to the BWCAW. Quiet, clean campsites, on the river.
Aug 12, 2025 · jill petronSmall with only 8 or 9 sites. $18 per night. Rustic with one outhouse. Sites are not super close together, but you will hear your neighbor every time they open a car door or laugh. One of our two night here people were up partying well into the night. Close to the gravel road which can be pretty busy, so road noise. If you want privacy are real.peace and quiet this spot may disappoint you. Close and convenient to many trails and the river is right there.
Sep 21, 2021 · Lee WitteThis place stinks, don't go here! Ok I'm being selfish...I don't want you to all flock there. Just spent two great nights here. Website said campground was in winter non-fee status and would be unplowed. Pleasantly the main drag was plowed, but the banks were pretty high. Also found the vault toilet door unlocked and useable. Lots of snow! Dug out our fire pit, setup camp. Fell asleep to the Temperance running next to us. We could hear a couple of vehicles pass the campground that were on the Sawbill but not bad at all. One nice thing is that this campground is right at the end of the blacktop on the Sawbill. Roads were clear all the way up to it. We had set out to stay at Baker Lake but drove and drove and could never find signage so we turned back. This was a great option for winter camping!!
Mar 27, 2017 · Seth JohnsonOff the beaten path, this was the perfect "roughing it" campground. Just steps from the Temperance River, the sound of the flowing water made for an easy sleep. Fresh water spigot and pit toilet were the only amenities. My dog and I had a great time.
