Fisherman's Island State Park South Campground About

Introduction / Overview

For Michiganders seeking a truly authentic camping experience, one that emphasizes natural beauty over modern conveniences, Fisherman's Island State Park South Campground stands as a shining example. Located in the picturesque region of Charlevoix, this state park offers a unique blend of rustic charm and breathtaking Lake Michigan shoreline. Unlike many commercial campgrounds, Fisherman's Island is designed for those who appreciate the simpler joys of camping: the crackle of a campfire, the sound of waves, and the incredible expanse of a starry night sky. It's a place where you can truly disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with nature.

The park itself encompasses over 2,600 acres, with more than six miles of pristine Lake Michigan shoreline. While named "Fisherman's Island," the "island" itself is often connected to the mainland by a sand spit, making it more of a peninsula, easily accessible for exploration. The South Campground, specifically, is renowned for its spacious, private sites, some of which are nestled directly along the stunning Lake Michigan beachfront. This offers an unparalleled opportunity to wake up to the sound of the waves and enjoy immediate access to the water. It’s a favorite among those with teardrop campers, tents, or small RVs, seeking a peaceful retreat.

This campground is proudly part of the Michigan State Park system, managed by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). This ensures a commitment to preserving the natural environment and providing well-maintained, albeit rustic, facilities. If your idea of a perfect getaway involves unspoiled beaches, ample space, and the chance to truly immerse yourself in Northern Michigan’s outdoor wonders, Fisherman's Island State Park South Campground is a destination you won't want to miss. It's a place where timeless memories are made, year after year.

Location and Accessibility

Fisherman's Island State Park South Campground is ideally situated at 16480 Bells Bay Rd, Charlevoix, MI 49720, USA. This prime location places it just southwest of the charming city of Charlevoix, making it easily accessible while still offering a secluded, natural feel. The park is conveniently located approximately one and a half miles south of Charlevoix on US-31, with a turn westward onto Bell Bay Road, leading directly to the park entrance about two and a half miles down.

Its proximity to Charlevoix means campers can enjoy the tranquility of the campground while having access to the city’s amenities, including shops, restaurants, and local attractions, just a short drive away. This balance of natural seclusion and nearby conveniences is a significant draw for many Michigan campers.

The campground’s placement directly on Lake Michigan’s shoreline is perhaps its most defining feature. This provides unparalleled access for swimming, paddle boarding, and simply enjoying the vast expanse of the Great Lake. The rolling dunes and wooded terrain within the park also offer excellent opportunities for hiking and exploring the diverse ecosystems of Northern Michigan. While the campground is rustic, its accessibility from major roadways ensures a relatively straightforward journey for those driving from various parts of Michigan, allowing for a seamless transition from daily life to outdoor adventure. The natural landscape is the main attraction, and the location ensures you are fully immersed in it.

Services Offered

Fisherman's Island State Park South Campground prides itself on offering a true rustic camping experience, focusing on essential facilities that support an unplugged getaway. While you won't find modern amenities like electrical hookups or hot showers at every site, the park provides what's necessary for a comfortable and authentic outdoor adventure.

  • Rustic Campsites: The South Campground features numerous rustic campsites. These sites are typically large and offer a good degree of privacy, allowing campers to truly spread out and enjoy their space. Many sites are beautifully wooded, and some are famously located right on the Lake Michigan shoreline, offering unparalleled views and direct beach access. These sites are suitable for tents, pop-up campers, and small teardrop campers.
  • Water Pumps: For potable water, the campground provides water pumps. Campers should be prepared to carry water to their sites for drinking and cooking, or bring their own containers for filling. These pumps are a fundamental part of the rustic camping experience, reminiscent of classic outdoor adventures.
  • Vault Toilets: Basic vault toilets are available throughout the campground. These are maintained by the park staff and provide essential sanitation facilities, adhering to the principles of low-impact camping. There are no flush toilets or showers, encouraging campers to embrace a more natural approach to hygiene or utilize alternative methods like solar showers.
  • Firewood and Ice Sales: For convenience, the park sells firewood and ice from the contact station. This saves campers the hassle of bringing these bulky items and ensures they have what they need for campfires and keeping perishables cool.
  • Dog-Friendly Areas: Sections of the shoreline are designated as pet-friendly, allowing campers to bring their beloved canine companions. Pets must always be on a 6-foot leash and under an owner's immediate control, and all pet waste must be properly disposed of in trash receptacles.

Promotions or Special Offers

As a Michigan State Park campground operated by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Fisherman's Island State Park South Campground typically does not offer commercial "promotions" or "special offers" in the way a private business might. The camping fees are set by the state and are consistent across all state parks for similar site types.

However, there are general benefits and passes that Michigan residents can utilize to make their state park visits more economical and convenient:

  • Recreation Passport: For Michigan residents, the most significant "promotion" is the Michigan Recreation Passport. This annual pass, purchased when renewing your vehicle registration, provides unlimited access to all Michigan state parks and recreation areas, including Fisherman's Island. It offers incredible value for frequent visitors and is highly recommended for anyone planning multiple state park trips throughout the year. Without a Recreation Passport, a daily entrance fee would apply to each visit.
  • Camping Fees: While not a "special offer," understanding the fee structure is important. Camping fees are charged per night and vary based on the type of site (e.g., rustic, modern, waterfront). It’s always best to check the official Michigan DNR website or the reservation system for the most current pricing.

To book a site at Fisherman's Island State Park South Campground, reservations are highly recommended, especially for the popular lakefront sites during peak season (summer and early fall). Bookings can be made through the Michigan DNR's central reservation system online or by phone. While there are no flash sales or discounts, the value offered by the Recreation Passport for Michigan residents is a significant benefit to consider for any outdoor enthusiast.

The most beautiful Campground! Selfishly, I hope it stays a quiet little secret. Sites are spread out and private. I got lucky and snagged one right on the lake and it was the most beautiful way to wake up and settle down for the night. Our teardrop camper was perfect for this trip and I hope to return every year 😊

Some campsites are right on Lake Michigan. Most sites are large. Water pumps and vault toilets is all you will get here, no power, no showers. Great place for swimming, paddle boarding, hiking

Really nice camp ground! Beach is spectacular, one of the best I've seen in Michigan. Some of the sites are right on the beach which is incredible. Bathrooms and dumpsters everywhere for convenience. Would highly recommend. Make sure you book early because those beach sites fill up quick.

Have camped here 3x and have yet to be disappointed. The wooded sites are spacious and most are only a 10-minute walk (through the woods) to the shore. Some sites actually back up to the sand

We stopped here to search for rocks, and we were somewhat successful. Long drive back to the end.
