Introduction / Overview
For Minnesotans seeking a unique, lively, and socially-focused camping experience in the heart of the beloved Detroit Lakes area, Shorewood Campgrounds offers an alternative to the traditional quiet resort model. Situated directly on the shores of Detroit Lake, this establishment is characterized by its relaxed, casual atmosphere and its close connection to the adjacent Shorewood Pub. It caters primarily to groups and individuals who prioritize location, a vibrant social scene, and basic, accessible accommodations over extensive modern amenities.
The site offers what is often described as a "primitive" camping experience across approximately nine acres of lush, open space. This setting makes it particularly well-suited for tent campers, groups, and those with self-contained recreational vehicles who are looking for a simple base from which to explore the lake and the local nightlife. Since 1973, Shorewood has been a fixture in the community, known not just for the campground but for the famous pub—a local hotspot that ensures the area is always brimming with activity, live entertainment, and community events year-round. While reviews suggest the facilities reflect this more rustic, older style of camping, the key draw for many local users is the unbeatable location on the lake and the fun, energetic environment that comes with being next to a popular, long-standing neighborhood establishment. It's the perfect choice for the camper who views the campsite as a place to sleep and the local scene as the main attraction.
It is important for prospective guests to note the distinct difference between this casual, event-adjacent camping style and the full-service RV resorts common in the area. Shorewood offers simplicity, a great location on Detroit Lake, and a built-in social venue for an authentic, high-energy lake country stay.
Location and Accessibility
Shorewood Campgrounds is ideally located right on Detroit Lake, one of the most famous and popular lakes in Minnesota. Its physical address is 1743 Long Bridge Rd, Detroit Lakes, MN 56501, USA. This highly accessible spot is a quick drive from the core of the city of Detroit Lakes, meaning guests have nearly immediate access to shopping, dining, and major local attractions.
The location on Long Bridge Road places the grounds right by the lake, making water access extremely convenient. The proximity to the Shorewood Pub is a defining feature, as the pub offers a destination that can be reached by car, snowmobile, or—most appealingly during the summer—by boat, thanks to the lake access. This makes it an effortless stop for local lake-goers. For Minnesota residents traveling from the metro areas or other regions, Detroit Lakes is a major destination easily reached via Highways 10 and 59, cementing its accessibility. The campground's position is also particularly strategic for attendees of major regional events, such as the annual We Fest country music festival, as it provides nearby, functional camping grounds for groups.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
Shorewood Campgrounds is uniquely suited for Minnesota locals, especially those who prioritize the social experience and lake access over five-star amenities. For residents of the Detroit Lakes area and nearby communities, Shorewood is known as an institution—a simple, honest camping option tied directly to one of the area’s most enduring and popular pubs. This is not the place for a quiet, secluded retreat; rather, it is the ideal spot for:
First, the
social camper
. The immediate proximity to the Shorewood Pub means that a lively environment, cold beverages, and hot food are always just steps away, which is a major draw for younger crowds, casual travelers, or groups looking to meet people. The friendly staff, such as the noted bartender Casey, and the welcoming local crowd enhance this vibrant atmosphere.Second, the
budget-conscious event-goer
. For those attending major Detroit Lakes events, the functional, low-cost camping provides an invaluable base camp that is close to the action.Third, the
no-fuss lake enthusiast
. The focus on primitive camping means a lower nightly rate and a simple check-in process at the pub, appealing to the Minnesotan who simply needs a place to lay their head after a long day of fishing or boating on Detroit Lake. While facility reviews suggest a need for readiness and a willingness to embrace the 'rustic' nature of the grounds—a common part of the genuine, old-school Minnesota camping narrative—the core value of an affordable, highly social, lakeside base in a top Minnesota vacation town remains unmatched for a specific, adventurous type of local user. It's a true slice of Detroit Lakes life, combining camping with community hub energy.1743 Long Bridge Rd, Detroit Lakes, MN 56501, USA
When I called they said 15$ per person, and there was some power, and to check in at the bar. The bar tender Casey was very friendly and the crowd, When we got there we were told 20per person, by a man, I said we were quoted 15$ by the lady that answered, he said she was "old" and was wrong. We did only pay the $15, next time...they should pay us. The out house is unusable. No plug ins. If I were giving Casey a review--5 stars .
