A small campground paired with a unique covered bridge spanning a fork of the Flambeau River. This campground was closed for four years beginning in 2015. Of approximately ten campgrounds across the Nicolet/Chequamegon shuttered that year, this is one of just several that reopened. The forest service plans to redesign the Smith Rapids property to better cater to campers with horses. The total number of campsites will be slightly reduced and some trails improved. Smith Rapids’ campsites are all first-come, first-served. Even on the busiest of weekends, there is no issue finding an open site here. Numerous scenic areas, hiking and ATV trails can be found nearby. The river here is canoeable, though can be a bit shallow at some times of year. Water is available at a hand pump in the picnic area just outside the campground entrance. It was clear and tasted fine.
