Sunset Point Campground is situated within the scenic area of Elk City Lake, near Independence, Kansas. While the precise street address for the campground itself might be broad, its location within the Elk City Lake region is well-known and accessible for Kansas locals. Independence, KS 67301, USA, serves as the general address for the area.
Elk City Lake is a prominent reservoir in Montgomery County, southeastern Kansas, known for its extensive recreational opportunities. The lake and its surrounding parks, including Sunset Point, are managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, ensuring well-maintained facilities and public access.
Accessibility to Sunset Point Campground from various parts of Kansas is generally straightforward. Independence, a city of significant size in the region, is well-connected by state highways, allowing for relatively easy drives from nearby towns and cities. For instance, it's accessible via US-160 and US-75, making it a feasible weekend getaway for residents across southeastern Kansas.
Within the campground itself, the sites are described as being "away from trees," suggesting an open layout that is beneficial for larger RVs and helps reduce issues with ticks. While this layout might not be ideal for traditional tent camping with immediate water access, it provides clear pathways for vehicles and spacious individual sites.
For those with boats, the campground's proximity to the lake and potential boat ramps (though not explicitly detailed for Sunset Point itself, common at large lake campgrounds) is a key advantage. The review mentions it's a "perfect spot for camping" for those with a boat and an RV, indicating good access to the water for launching and enjoying the lake. The "beautiful views at sunset" are a testament to its prime positioning on the lake's edge, offering picturesque natural scenery for campers.
While direct access to the water from every campsite for fishing or swimming might be hindered by "bushes in the way" and "lots of big rocks," the overall accessibility to Elk City Lake's broader recreational areas remains a strong point. Campers can access various parts of the lake for their preferred activities, making Sunset Point a base camp rather than a direct waterside retreat for every activity.

Customer Reviews
I give this 2 stars because yes the camp sites are away from trees so no tics, if you have an RV probably a great spot for camping since they have a playground for kids. If you have a boat as well as a RV probably perfect spot for camping honestly. Though if you're looking for traditional camping with a tent and fire with a spot to fish and swim at your campsite I would say go to another lake because the camping spots are not good for those amenities. There are bushes in the way to get to water and lots of big rocks to walk down, yes that's nature I get it but very inconvenient when trying to fish or swim. The bathrooms are okay but it's only one stall and the womens restroom door doesn't automatically close like the men's so lots of bugs get inside, and some women don't like that aspect... Lol. But beautiful views at sunset for sure. If you want a good fire their fire pits are not that big at all, though it does have a grill on every fire pit, and trees that are around are trimmed. My personal rating out of 10 for this lake is probably 4-5 for lakes I've been to. They also put up reservation tickets for campsites a week in advance for some reason, someone had the campsite we were at reserved for the 6th when we were here on the 1st tried calling the office and regional number and they had no customer service assistance so we just camped at campsite since we were here well in advance of the reservation. So if you're looking for views and a boat I'm lake I'd say this is your place but if you want more tent camping swimming and fishing I'd find another place to go.
It is a great place to camp and enjoy the views and the quiet beauty of the water and the nature
I love elk state park but this campground offers very little privacy, no shading, and sites are close together. The campground is very well maintained!
Beautiful camp sites and great facilities! We'll definitely be returning this summer to enjoy everything they have to offer!!
