This is not your typical crowded RV park with concrete pads and full hookups; instead, it's a sprawling, rustic haven designed for those who want to genuinely unplug, reconnect with the wilderness, and create lasting memories. Spread across a vast 500-acre farm, The Slab embraces primitive camping and a wide array of outdoor activities, making it a perfect destination for hunters, kayakers, families, and anyone seeking a dose of authentic Kentucky nature.

Reviews from satisfied campers consistently highlight the friendly staff, the ample space for various activities, and the sense of peace that comes from being truly "unplugged" from the digital world. It's a place where the focus is on the experience, the natural surroundings, and the camaraderie of fellow adventurers, making it a beloved spot for many Kentucky outdoor enthusiasts.
The Slab by the Barren Campground is located at 10570 Bugtussle Rd, Gamaliel, KY 42140, USA. This address places it in a beautiful, rural part of Monroe County, Kentucky, close to the Barren River. Gamaliel is a small community, embodying the charm and tranquility of Kentucky's countryside, making The Slab an ideal retreat for those looking to escape urban environments.
Despite its secluded feel, The Slab is reasonably accessible for many Kentuckians. From major cities like Bowling Green, the drive typically takes around an hour to an hour and a half, involving state routes that wind through picturesque landscapes. For those traveling from Lexington or Louisville, the journey would be longer, approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, utilizing interstates and then transitioning to state highways like US-31E or KY-90 before reaching Gamaliel. The roads leading to Bugtussle Road are generally well-maintained, suitable for vehicles pulling trailers or RVs, though campers should be prepared for typical country roads. The park's vast acreage means that while the main entrance is accessible, individual campsites, particularly primitive ones, might require navigating gravel roads within the property. The remote location contributes to the "unplugged" experience, as cell phone service can be limited in the immediate area, encouraging guests to truly disconnect and immerse themselves in nature. This blend of natural seclusion and reasonable accessibility makes The Slab a desirable destination for outdoor lovers across Kentucky.
Primitive Camping Sites: The campground offers 75 very large, shaded primitive sites spread across its 500-acre farm. These sites do not have hookups but can accommodate RVs on most sites, and quiet generators are welcome.

Potable Water: Accessible potable water is available on-site to meet campers' hydration needs.
Camp Store: A camp store is available at the check-in office, stocked with ice cream and other forgotten necessities, ensuring guests have access to basic supplies.
Kayak and Tube Rentals: The Slab offers kayak and tube rentals for various river trips (1, 2, 3, 6, and 10 miles), allowing guests to easily enjoy the Barren River.
Shuttle Service: A convenient shuttle service is provided for river activities, making it easy for guests to enjoy kayaking, tubing, and tanking without worrying about vehicle retrieval.
Firewood: Firewood is available for purchase at the camp store, and guests are allowed to collect fallen wood from the ground or brush piles (but not cut down trees).
Recreational Amenities at the Clubhouse/Barn: The main "barn" area serves as a communal hub with activities such as a pool table, cornhole, and other games, providing entertainment options, especially on rainy days or in the evenings.
Expansive 500-Acre Farm: The sheer size of the property allows for vast, spread-out campsites, offering a sense of privacy and abundant space for various outdoor pursuits, including hunting.
Barren River Access and Activities: A major highlight is direct access to the Barren River, offering fantastic opportunities for swimming, fishing (including stripe, smallmouth, rock bass, Kentucky bass, channel cats, flatheads, and walleye), kayaking, tubing, and a unique "tanking" experience.
Water Slide: On the upper side of The Slab bridge, there's a 75-foot-long water slide that empties into one of the swimming holes, providing a thrilling and refreshing activity.
Extensive Hiking Trails: The property boasts numerous trails, from scenic bluff views to quiet spring-fed slate rock hollers, catering to all levels of hikers and explorers.
Friendly and Helpful Staff: Reviewers consistently praise the "super nice" and "friendly" staff, particularly Kent, who provide detailed explanations of trails and are attentive to guest needs.
Unplugged Experience: The remote nature of the campground, with limited cell service, encourages guests to truly disconnect from technology and reconnect with nature and their companions.
Family-Friendly Atmosphere: The variety of activities, from water sports to clubhouse games, makes it suitable for families, offering something for everyone to enjoy.
On-Site Amenities for Convenience: Despite being primitive, the presence of clean showers, toilets, potable water, and a camp store adds a level of comfort that enhances the rustic camping experience.
While The Slab by the Barren Campground does not typically advertise traditional "promotions" in the commercial sense (like percentage off discounts), its overall value proposition lies in the unique experiences and comprehensive amenities offered for its rates. However, potential "offers" can be inferred from its operational model:
Bundle Deals for Activities: While not explicitly stated as a "promotion," the campground's wide range of activities like kayaking, tubing, and "tanking" with shuttle services often come as part of a package or daily rate, offering a comprehensive outdoor experience for a single price.
Competitive Primitive Camping Rates: Compared to full-hookup RV parks, primitive campgrounds like The Slab often offer more budget-friendly nightly rates, making outdoor adventures more accessible.
Group Rates: For hunting trips or large family gatherings, it is common for campgrounds of this nature to offer special rates for booking multiple sites or for larger groups, which could be inquired about directly.
Kayak/Tube Rental Packages: The availability of on-site rentals, often with shuttle services included, means less hassle and potentially better value than seeking these services off-site.

Customer Reviews
Hunting trip with my son and a friend , had a great time, we chose to primitive camp down on the river. Great spot. Club house had pool table , corn hole and couple other activities to do. Staff was friendly, property was large and plenty of space to hunt. Met our needs, simple and unplugged. Campsite was spacious and a Great place to get connected without being connected.
Kent was super nice and took care of us well. Explained the trails in detail when we went riding!. He even brought us some quarters to play pool when the change machine broke!
Trail rode my horse 🐎 here today. The place is beautiful. The lady was very nice. Like any place your trail ride in Kentucky shoes on your horse is recommended!
What sweet spot for a day trip or camping. We stayed at RV/Tent Site 16. This site has 3 levels. The lowest level sits on a gravel bar within the creek, very beautiful. We rented kayaks and tubes for our group of 10. There was live music, keroke, plenty of games and a food truck. We enjoyed it so much that we booked the same site again.
Great little spot to get away, not too far from Bowling Green. We brought our kids to their first camping trip here and we all had a great time. The activity barn is fantastic for families and kids. The customer service is top notch! We accidentally killed our car battery and sent Carrie a message and not to long later they came down and gave us a jump. We will definitely come back, we want to try the cabins next time.
