For Texans, this means a potential home base for exploring the rich natural beauty of East Texas, with the added benefit of a community feel. However, like any large campground, understanding its unique characteristics, including both its strengths and areas for improvement, is essential for a truly enjoyable stay.
Thousand Trails Lake Tawakoni is situated at 1246 Rains County Road 1470, Point, TX 75472, USA. This location places it in a peaceful, rural area of Rains County, known for its scenic beauty and, most notably, for being home to Lake Tawakoni. The campground boasts six miles of shoreline along the lake and spans 480 acres of oak tree-covered terrain, offering breathtaking views and ample space to explore. As the "bald eagle capital of the state," Lake Tawakoni provides spectacular bird-viewing opportunities, attracting nature enthusiasts from all over Texas.
Accessibility to the campground involves navigating county roads from larger state highways. For a bigger city fix, Greenville is about 30 minutes away, with Dallas approximately an hour to the west, providing access to extensive amenities, shopping, and entertainment options. This balance between rural tranquility and reasonable access to urban centers makes it a suitable destination for Texans seeking both escape and convenience.

My husband and I travel full time in our RV and we workcamp at a new campground every 6 months. We view every campground from the staff perspective, as well as the guest. I also want to note that the campground appeared to be short staffed while we were there. PROS: •The landscape and lake are beautiful. The campground is set off in a rural area with mature trees, wildlife, and green grass. •All of the staff we encountered were pleasant and welcoming with the exception of one ranger.(Gryphon, Jordan, Laura, and Kelle were wonderful.) •There are many dumpsters throughout the campground. •Although Wi-Fi isn’t offered, we did have cell reception at our site. *If you have starlink, tell the rangers so they can try to give you a site without complete tree coverage. •It was quiet at night. There is a gate that requires a code to enter. We felt safe. •There were weekly activities scheduled for guests. •This campground has two pools and a great play area for children. As well as mini golf and other games. CONS: •When we arrived, laundry room was filthy, with a rotting floor from water damage and dirty walls. *While we were there, the campground closed the laundry room for repairs from 4/16-4/23. Even though they didn’t notify the guests. •Most of the sites have micro trash and limbs that need to be removed. This is likely due to staffing. •I would call this campground “dog tolerant”. There is no dog run or dog park. •The roads throughout the campground are littered with pot holes so I wouldn’t try to come in after dark for the first time. •The two pools definitely need to be cleaned more regularly. Thousand Trails contracts out a lot of their maintenance and it shows it some areas.
Apr 23, 2025 · Brittany LollisThis park could be great but it's terribly mismanaged! No maintenance, not accommodating for starlink users, unkempt sites, uncut grass and a filthy kiddy pool I wouldn't even let my dog swim in. The electrical at our first site was broken and the alternate site offered by the manager Lindsey wouldn't have fit anywhere near a trailer of our size. She admittedly is new to rving. The ranger griffin, kinda wish he was the manager, was the only reason we didn't have to pack up and move to a new park entirely but even on our third attempt at a site I can hardly say it was great. The lake surrounding the park is beautiful but most sites are not functional so availability is extremely limited. Will be posting a picture of managements master map of all the down sites which we saw in the office briefly before the the manager snached it up...how is this okay thousand trails?
May 28, 2025 · Seth BarchusIt was alright, but the people running it are obviously a family or very close friends which from experience causes places to deteriorate at a faster place. For instance the maintenance lady, daughter of the activity director, has not been properly trained. The leaves are so thick on the ground they are decaying underneath which does not let water run off correctly causing deep mud and flooding which is UNSAFE. The activities were fun, public showers need to be renovated and a change machine put into the laundry room if the office won't sell quarters.
Feb 14, 2025 · Alex SklarThis campground was in better shape last year. It really needs a revamp and some basic maintenance. I like this campground and have great views of the lake and decent sites. This is what I would fix the roads are in poor shape. The sites could use a little TLC. The workers are very friendly and helpful.
Jan 31, 2025 · Jessica OliverWe camped beside the lake for a couple of weeks. The weather cooperated and we really enjoyed walking and birdwatching while we were there. Saw some people pulling quite a few fish out of the lake right from the dock. Will have to bring our rods next time.
