The Au Sable Canoe Camp Ground is conveniently located in Grayling, MI, specifically at Grayling, MI 49738, USA. While the precise street address might be a bit nuanced due to its rustic nature, it’s generally understood to be situated seven miles east of Grayling, managed by Hartwick Pines State Park. This puts it squarely in Crawford County, a prime location for exploring Michigan's natural wonders. The campground is also situated on the main branch of the Au Sable River, offering direct water access for paddlers.
Access to the campground can sometimes be a bit of an adventure in itself, as is common with many rustic, off-the-beaten-path destinations. Some past visitors have noted that certain road accesses might be gated off or overgrown, requiring a bit of navigation or reliance on up-to-date DNR maps. However, its primary charm lies in its "paddle-in" accessibility, making it a favorite for canoe campers seeking a truly immersive experience. There are designated walk-in and paddle-in sites, with parking available near a kiosk in the campground for those who choose to hike in with their gear. This unique accessibility contributes to its untouched feel, allowing visitors to truly disconnect from the everyday grind and immerse themselves in the quiet beauty of the river and surrounding forest. For detailed driving directions or current access conditions, it's always advisable to consult the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) website or contact Hartwick Pines State Park, which manages the campground.
As a rustic state forest campground, the Au Sable Canoe Camp Ground typically operates on a simple fee structure for its campsites rather than offering extensive promotions or special offers in the traditional commercial sense. The current rate for a rustic site is generally around $20 per night. However, it's always recommended to check the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) website or contact Hartwick Pines State Park for the most up-to-date pricing and any potential changes. While there aren't usually discounts for extended stays or loyalty programs, the inherent value of a serene, natural escape at an affordable price is the primary "offer" here. For those looking for multi-day paddling adventures, the campground's strategic location along the Au Sable River provides an excellent base, allowing for seamless transitions between camping and river excursions without needing to move vehicles frequently, effectively enhancing the overall experience.
It's also worth noting that some local canoe liveries and outfitters in the Grayling area, while separate entities, may offer packages that combine canoe rentals with information or services related to camping on the Au Sable River, including tips for navigating state forest campgrounds. Exploring these local businesses could potentially uncover bundled deals or helpful resources for your trip. Always verify details directly with the campground management or the Michigan DNR before planning your visit.

Tried to access from road which DNR map shows you directions , to discover its gated off and overgrown "road" to camp ground. Ended up at a different StF camp.

Feb 10, 2019 · Maggie GasserLanded here while kayaking this weekend. Be advised: all signage says NO CAMPING; seems like an oxymoron (Canoe Camp...but no camping allowed). Nevertheless, a pleasant place to stop, with water and an outhouse.
