Introduction / Overview
Tucked away in the "Heart of the Wilderness" in Koochiching County, the Big Falls Campground & Horse Camp is a true northern Minnesota gem, offering an exceptional blend of natural beauty and modern convenience. This municipal park, situated directly on the picturesque Bigfork River, is the only one of its kind in the region, providing complete camping facilities for RVs, tents, and even a dedicated area for equestrian enthusiasts. The most defining feature is the campground's proximity to the stunning natural rock ledges and outcroppings of the Bigfork River, which create beautiful rapids and waterfalls that are known to be soothingly therapeutic. As one satisfied local camper noted, the sound of the falls is “SO therapeutic we both slept like bears in January.”
The park’s location is ideal for those seeking both relaxation and recreation. It’s an easy base camp for exploring the vast surrounding wilderness, offering direct access to the famous Blue Ox ATV Trail and a variety of horse riding opportunities. The setting is one of lofty pines and surrounding woods, creating a serene and pristine natural environment that changes beautifully with the seasons. Whether you are seeking a peaceful riverside retreat to enjoy the therapeutic sounds of rushing water, or an active adventure exploring the vast trail systems, Big Falls Campground & Horse Camp provides a welcoming and well-maintained facility for all types of Northern Minnesota travelers. The commitment to cleanliness and visitor comfort, highlighted by reviewers praising the “clean indoor showers and restrooms,” sets this location apart as a premier choice for locals looking for a reliable and high-quality outdoor experience close to home.
Location and Accessibility

Furthermore, its placement along the Bigfork River makes it a crucial portage and rest area on the Bigfork River State Water Trail, welcoming canoeists, kayakers, and boaters. While most of the surrounding area offers a deep-woods feel, the camp is conveniently located near the main routes for travelers heading north or south through the state, making it a perfect stopping point for a local Minnesota road trip or a multi-day outdoor excursion.

Jul 29, 2025 · Jamie ZinckeGreat campground. Directly next to really nice falls. Great showers and bathrooms. Slight amount of road noise from the passing road. Fellow campers, please show some respect and don’t throw your cigarette butts on the ground!

Jun 10, 2025 · Ross LovingOur recent visit to Big Falls Campground in Minnesota was a poignant yet peaceful experience, as we stayed there to lay my father to rest at the nearby Veterans cemetery. Despite the somber occasion, the campground's serene environment and exceptional facilities provided us with a comforting stay. Nestled along the stunning Big Fork River, the campground offered breathtaking views and the soothing sounds of the river, creating a perfect backdrop for relaxation and reflection. For our family, this location held a special significance, as my father had always cherished the river's fast-moving waters. Staying at Big Falls Campground felt like a fitting tribute to his memory, allowing us to be close to something he loved so dearly. The well-maintained and level sites were ideal for our RV, and the clean, modern restrooms and showers were a welcome amenity. My son, an avid angler, had a fantastic time fishing from shore and caught an impressive number of bass and northern pike. The historic train bridge in the background added to the picturesque setting. In a time of sorrow, Big Falls Campground provided us with a peaceful and memorable stay. Being surrounded by the natural beauty of the river, which my father loved so much, brought us comfort. We highly recommend this campground to anyone looking for a serene and natural setting, coupled with excellent facilities and a welcoming atmosphere. We will certainly return to this beautiful place in the future.
Sep 26, 2024 · Cory GrahamIt’s great place. The bathroom and shower are super clean. The campground is so quiet, I liked that. One thing I did not like is there is not much to do or walk around, or hiking. If you are heading up to voyageurs from the Midwest, this is the perfect place to take a rest or spent a night there.
