East Cook, MN 55604, USA
Introduction / Overview
For Minnesotans who cherish the silence and challenge of the great North Woods, BWCA Campsite #664 offers a direct gateway to the unparalleled isolation of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). This campsite is not a drive-in facility but a designated, primitive overnight location deep within the Superior National Forest, accessible only by canoe and portage. Campsite #664 is specifically situated on Duncan Lake, placing it in the popular eastern section of the BWCAW near the Gunflint Trail corridor, south of the Canadian border.
The site is noted in local trip reports for its ability to accommodate larger groups, making it a valuable find for Minnesota families or friends planning an extended wilderness adventure. Unlike many smaller, constrained sites, Campsite #664 is recognized for its generous layout. Past visitors have confirmed its ample space, allowing for multiple sleeping setups—including space for three tents and the comfortable setup of two hammocks—with a fire area that is described as "spacious." This combination of roominess and seclusion is highly sought after by those undertaking multi-day canoe expeditions.
Duncan Lake itself is a stunning, clear-water body, offering excellent opportunities for paddling, fishing, and exploration along the dramatic Canadian border route. A stay at Campsite #664 promises a truly authentic, self-reliant experience, requiring preparation, skill, and, most importantly, the necessary BWCA entry permit. This location is an authentic slice of Minnesota's natural heritage, providing a much-needed escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life.
Location and Accessibility
BWCA Campsite #664 is located on Duncan Lake within the Superior National Forest, falling under the general jurisdiction of East Cook, MN 55604. To reach this secluded spot, visitors must secure a quota permit for a specific Entry Point (EP) that provides access to the Duncan Lake chain. A typical entry would be through the Gunflint Trail corridor, utilizing EPs that lead into the Rose Lake or Clearwater Lake area before paddling and portaging into Duncan Lake.
Accessibility to Campsite #664 is strictly non-motorized and requires a challenging, though rewarding, backcountry journey. After paddling in, the site itself is typically found on a shoreline or point location on Duncan Lake. Descriptions note that the site is situated on a "narrow ridge leading up a hill," which, while providing a degree of elevation and potential views, means the landing area is small and the tent pads are somewhat concentrated along this spine. The effort involved in paddling through multiple lakes and completing the required portages ensures that the area maintains its mandated wilderness solitude, protecting it from casual day visitors and reserving the experience for committed paddlers. Proper navigational skills and fitness for portaging are essential for safely reaching and enjoying this location.

Solid campsite. We had plenty of space for 3 tents. The fire area is spacious. We had two hammocks up, as well.
