For Texans, the call of the outdoors is a familiar tune, and when it comes to finding a truly immersive and engaging camping experience, especially for youth, Camp Trevor Rees-Jones Trading Post in Athens is a name that resonates. This isn't just any campground; it's a destination renowned for its commitment to adventure, learning, and creating lasting memories. Often associated with the Boy Scouts, it provides a structured yet exciting environment that fosters growth, teamwork, and a deep appreciation for nature.
The reviews from visitors consistently highlight the exceptional quality of the experience at Camp Trevor Rees-Jones. One glowing testimonial states, "Great camp, great staff, and fun activities for the boys." This sentiment is echoed by others who appreciate the welcoming atmosphere and the dedication of the team. A detailed review provides practical insights into the camp environment, noting, "The sand is very fine at TRJ, and will get everywhere. We also found ourselves doing laundry every other day, so a bucket, some dawn, a clothesline, and clothespins are recommended equipment. The clothespins are recommended because the breeze is amazing, but it will also strip your clothes off the line." This reviewer also commends the staff's serious approach to guest well-being, mentioning, "The staff is so serious about all their guests drinking water that they even gave us all water bottles the first day." They also shared important practical information about connectivity: "When we were there, only the adults with AT&T had service, keep that in mind for your emergency communications plan." However, the staff's dedication shines through, as they describe a minor medical issue handled with exceptional care: "We had a minor medical issue, in the middle of the night, and had to go all the way to the clinic to contact the Ranger. Once the medical problems was communicated, the staff went above and beyond to rectify the situation." The overall consensus is captured beautifully by another simple yet powerful review: "Beautiful camping grounds with lots to do and many memories to make." These insights underscore the camp's commitment to safety, enjoyment, and a truly memorable outdoor adventure.
The essence of Camp Trevor Rees-Jones Trading Post lies in its ability to blend robust outdoor activities with a supportive and well-prepared environment. The staff's commitment to safety, particularly regarding hydration, is a testament to their professionalism and care for all campers. While the natural elements, like fine sand and breezy conditions, are part of the authentic camping experience, the practical advice from previous campers about laundry preparedness is invaluable. The balance of rustic outdoor living with thoughtful amenities, such as power and lighting at pavilions (with a helpful note about bugs!), ensures a comfortable yet adventurous stay. The proactive and compassionate response of the staff during medical emergencies further solidifies the camp's reputation as a safe and reliable destination. This combination of thrilling activities, beautiful grounds, and dedicated personnel makes Camp Trevor Rees-Jones Trading Post a premier choice for anyone seeking a comprehensive and rewarding outdoor experience in East Texas.
Camp Trevor Rees-Jones Trading Post is nestled in the scenic landscapes of Athens, TX 75751, USA, with its address simply listed as Camp Trevor Rees - Jones. This location places it within Henderson County, a region of East Texas known for its rolling hills, pine forests, and numerous lakes, providing a quintessential Texan outdoor experience.
Athens, the "Friendliest City in Texas," serves as the welcoming gateway to the camp. While the camp itself offers a secluded, immersive outdoor environment, it remains remarkably accessible from major Texas cities. For instance, it's approximately an hour and a half drive southeast of Dallas, making it a feasible destination for weekend trips or longer camps for families and groups from the DFW Metroplex. Houston is a bit further, but still manageable for extended visits. The camp is reached via well-maintained county roads once you exit the main highways, ensuring a smooth journey for vehicles of all sizes. Despite its rural setting, Athens provides essential services, including grocery stores, gas stations, and some dining options, which are convenient for stocking up on supplies before heading into the camp. The relative remoteness also contributes to the camp's appeal, offering a true escape from urban noise and light pollution, allowing for a more authentic connection with nature. However, it's important to note the limited cell service (primarily AT&T) mentioned in reviews, which underscores the need for a pre-planned emergency communication strategy, though the dedicated staff are always available to assist on-site.
As Camp Trevor Rees-Jones Trading Post primarily functions as a youth camp, often affiliated with organizations like the Boy Scouts of America, its "promotions" typically manifest as structured program fees, scholarship opportunities, or early bird registration discounts for specific camping sessions. It is less likely to offer general public discounts in the way a commercial RV park might. Instead, benefits come through the comprehensive programming, dedicated staff, and invaluable experiences provided within the camp fees. For individuals or groups interested in attending, the best way to learn about any available special offers, registration deadlines, or specific program pricing is to contact the camp directly. Inquire about their seasonal program guides, group rates for large reservations, or any financial assistance programs they might have for participants. Calling (903) 677-9371 will connect you with their team who can provide the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding their offerings and any ways to optimize your experience there.

Great camp, great staff, and fun activities for the boys. "Be sure to remember to drink lots, and lots, of water. Because, if you don't, you're going to drop, like a rock... thaaat's right." Notes: The sand is very fine at TRJ, and will get everywhere. We also found ourselves doing laundry every other day, so a bucket, some dawn, a clothesline, and clothespins are recommended equipment. The clothespins are recommended because the breeze is amazing, but it will also strip your clothes off the line. The staff is so serious about all their guests drinking water that they even gave us all water bottles the first day. There is power at the pavilion in each camp (see pictures),and each one also has florescent lights; if you turn them on the bugs will come introduce themselves to you too! When we were there, only the adults with AT&T had service, keep that in mind for your emergency communications plan. We had a minor medical issue, in the middle of the night, and had to go all the way to the clinic to contact the Ranger. Once the medical problems was communicated, the staff went above and beyond to rectify the situation. I hope this, and the photos help. Be safe, and have fun! 🤠
