For Mainers who cherish the great outdoors but also value convenience and a touch of reliable comfort, the Augusta / Gardiner KOA Journey in Richmond is a standout choice. This family and pet-friendly park has earned a reputation among local campers as an ideal home base for exploring the vast, beautiful heart of the Pine Tree State. Often described as a 'Journey' campground—perfectly situated for travelers—its wealth of amenities and friendly, rustic atmosphere makes it much more than just a stopover; it’s a destination where you can settle in and truly unwind.
The local owners, Jayar and Becky, are known for their commitment to guest satisfaction and for creating a welcoming environment that keeps families coming back year after year. As one long-time patron happily shared, "Hands-down, one of the best campgrounds I have ever been to in Maine. Tons of family activities and a really friendly environment. Me and my family have been going here for three years and plan to go Again, next year." This sentiment highlights the park's focus on building a genuine camping community.
The campground is nestled on a lovely hillside with sites thoughtfully terraced into the landscape, providing a great mix of shade from pine, oak, ash, and maple trees. This setting offers a quiet, natural environment where you can enjoy the sights and sounds of Maine wildlife while remaining close to modern comforts and major travel routes. Even for large rigs, the park is designed for easy access, as one RV enthusiast noted: "This was a surprisingly good KOA. It is located on a hill but the sites were well leveled and easy to get in and out of with a 40' motorhome towing a jeep. Hook ups were all good with good water pressure." Hands-down, one of the best campgrounds I have ever been to in Maine. Tons of family activities and a really friendly environment. Me and my family have been going here for three years and plan to go Again, next year. The lots are pretty comfortable, And they even have movie night, where you can bring your kids down and launch a random movie on the big screen! I definitely recommend going there at least once.
Sep 16, 2025 · Cola CobbThis was a surprisingly good KOA. It is located on a hill but the sites were well leveled and easy to get in and out of with a 40' motorhome towing a jeep. Hook ups were all good with good water pressure. This KOA has a lot for it only being considered a journey. Good stop if going through Maine or visiting the area.
Sep 23, 2025 · Jacob SessionsIt’s extremely rare to find a KOA cabin that’s technically primitive but with a bathroom in it, especially under 100 bucks! This is an amazing value! The staff are above and beyond friendly and helpful! Grounds are clean and well maintained, and I heard from staff about future projects planned. Family friendly, quiet, and safe. We stayed two nights and enjoyed our stay so much that we actually filmed so much, that we broke up our experience into two vlogs for our channel on YouTube, Hammocks to Coasters. Can’t wait to go back!
May 21, 2025 · Kristina Varnum (Hammocks to Coasters)Great experience at the Augusta Gardiner koa! The owners, Becky and Jay are wonderful and have a fantastic and friendly staff who are willing to help and also full of local knowledge! Clean pool and washrooms! Great playground and dog park! Close to the lake, peacock beach (about a half mile down the rd. ) is a wonderful spot if you're looking for a fresh water adventure!
Jul 18, 2025 · l hSpacious and level sites. There is a playground, dog park and hiking trail. The staff was friendly and the campground is clean, but their women's showers are not. Mold and pink slime in each shower. Their sign on the entrance door to the shower states showers are cleaned daily. I can guarantee you, they definitely are not. The showers need bleach and a good pressure washing or deep clean.
