Nestled within the Hiawatha National Forest, this campground offers a serene escape, providing a world apart just a few minutes from the popular attractions of Mackinac Island and St. Ignace.
For many Michiganders, the allure of the Upper Peninsula lies in its vast wilderness and unspoiled natural beauty. Carp River Campground taps directly into this desire, offering a more rustic and private camping experience compared to busier, more developed sites. While it provides a deep connection with nature, it’s also remarkably close to beloved tourist spots, offering the best of both worlds. This article will delve into what makes Carp River Campground a unique and appealing choice for your next Michigan camping trip, covering its location, the services it offers, its distinct features, and why it's a hidden gem for locals seeking tranquility.
Carp River Campground is situated at Usfs 3445, St Ignace, MI 49781, USA. This location places it within the vast expanse of the Hiawatha National Forest, providing the very secluded and natural setting that many campers desire. Despite its seemingly remote address, it boasts excellent accessibility to key Upper Peninsula attractions. Reviews highlight that it’s "just a few minutes away from the attractions of Mackinac Island and St Ignace." This means campers can enjoy profound tranquility by day and easily venture out to experience the vibrant tourist hubs whenever they choose.
Accessibility within the campground is via roads that, while in need of maintenance (described as having "large potholes" and in "dire need of either repaving or converting to gravel"), allow vehicle access to the individual campsites. The secluded nature of the sites, with "plenty of space between sites" and "ample woods and vegetation," is a direct result of its forest location. While some infrastructure, like the well and a bathroom, might occasionally be out of service, the overall experience of being deeply embedded in nature, yet close to amenities, is a significant draw. Its proximity to St. Ignace means campers can easily resupply or find additional services if needed, balancing rustic charm with practical convenience.
Carp River Campground offers a more rustic camping experience, focusing on essential services that support a natural and secluded stay. While some facilities may experience occasional issues, the core offerings are designed to provide a comfortable outdoor adventure.
Carp River Campground stands out with several unique features and highlights that appeal to campers seeking a more traditional and nature-focused experience.
As a U.S. Forest Service (USFS) campground, Carp River Campground operates differently from privately owned campgrounds or state parks when it comes to "promotions" or "special offers." Instead of traditional discounts, its value lies in its standardized, generally affordable fee structure and the intrinsic benefits of camping on public lands.
The primary "special offer" at Carp River Campground is the unparalleled experience of "seclusion, quiet and being surrounded by giant pines and a placid stream" at a reasonable price point. This natural immersion is the true value proposition for campers seeking an authentic outdoor escape. For the most accurate and up-to-date information on fees and any specific policies, it's always best to consult the official Hiawatha National Forest website or contact the campground directly using the provided contact information.

If you like seclusion, quiet and being surrounded by giant pines and a placid stream, then this campground is for you. Just a few minutes away from the attractions of Mackinac Island and St Ignace, you'll be in a world apart at this campground, with plenty of space between sites. Campground host was awesome. Bugs were almost non-existent. (Aug 20th) Will definitely return for a repeat visit!
Aug 25, 2024 · Byron TuckerDrinking water well in the back loop was out of service. Large potholes all over the campground road were not filled or patched. Bathroom in the middle section of the campground was closed. The campground road is in dire need of either repaving or converting to gravel. Campsites are very scenic with ample woods and vegetation between sites. Few are on the actual river, however, and there are only a couple stairways to access the river along the campground's half mile of water frontage. Most sites on the river don't have a great view of the water because trees and vegetation between sites and the river aren't trimmed back. Bathrooms were extremely clean, but considering overall infrastructure maintenance I'd say the state does far better keeping up their campgrounds than the federal forest does here. There was no onsite host in July 2024 when we visited.
Jul 01, 2024 · Greg KruegerGreat campground. Quiet and no bugs. Camp host not so much. Was condescending and not welcoming at all. No place for that behavior in a campground. Hopefully he won't be there next year. Great place to camp.
Sep 05, 2024 · makemwunderMy husband and I camped here for two nights the first week of July. It was rustic and secluded but not too far from St Ignace and other surrounding towns. The mosquitos were absolutely terrible when we went (obviously not anyone’s fault but just an fyi). There are no showers and only outhouse bathrooms.
Jul 03, 2024 · Cassidy TeepleVery clean vault bathrooms. Sites are very well kept. Water available. Some sites directly on the river. Spacious sites. Serene and peaceful campground. Highly reccommend.
