Introduction / Overview
For Rhode Island locals who own a self-contained RV, the Charlestown Breachway campground is not merely a place to park—it is a coveted, bucket-list coastal experience. Located in the picturesque South County area of Charlestown, this state-run camping area is celebrated for its unparalleled proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. Unlike many traditional campgrounds that are tucked away inland, the Breachway is situated directly on the east side of the natural inlet, offering campers spectacular, panoramic views of Block Island Sound and immediate access to one of the most beautiful and quiet stretches of Rhode Island coastline, Charlestown Beach. This destination is exclusively for self-contained recreational vehicles (RVs must have a permanently installed black and grey water system), and it embraces a minimalist, rustic style of seaside camping where the natural surroundings are the primary amenity.
The appeal of Charlestown Breachway is its focus on location over luxury. It is a no-frills, beachfront haven for the true outdoor enthusiast who prioritizes direct beach access, excellent saltwater fishing, and falling asleep to the sound of the waves. While sites can be close together, and the road leading in is famously rough and sandy, the low cost for a beachfront spot and the pure environmental beauty make it a highly desirable location for in-state residents, especially during the peak season from mid-April through late October. Reservations for this unique spot are extremely popular and securing one is a point of pride for many local RVers.
Location and Accessibility
The Charlestown Breachway campground is officially located at 812-774 Charlestown Beach Rd, Charlestown, RI 02813, USA. Situated in southern Rhode Island, in what is affectionately known as 'South County' or the 'Ocean State's' coastal region, its location is perfect for residents looking for a quintessential New England beach vacation that is still an easy drive from Providence, Warwick, and the greater New England area. The campground is nestled between the Atlantic Ocean to the south and the tranquil salt ponds and marshes inland, providing a dynamic coastal ecosystem right at your doorstep.
Access to the sites themselves requires driving a mile or more down a sand-packed road, which local users should be prepared for, as it can be quite rough. Once there, the accessibility to the main attractions is unbeatable. Campers are just a short walk from the golden sand of Charlestown Beach and the Breachway channel, which connects Ninigret Pond to Block Island Sound. The Breachway also includes a boat launch ramp, providing easy water access for boaters, kayakers, and paddleboarders looking to explore the pond or the sound. While the location is remote and secluded, meaning there are virtually no walkable amenities like restaurants or large stores, the nearest towns of Westerly and South Kingstown are a short drive away for all necessary supplies.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
Charlestown Breachway is more than just a campground; it is an iconic Rhode Island tradition, and its suitability for locals lies in its specialized, high-demand coastal experience. For the dedicated Rhode Islander who owns a self-contained RV, securing one of the 75 spots here is the ultimate summer accomplishment. It epitomizes the "Ocean State" lifestyle, trading the extensive amenities of a resort for a direct, unadulterated connection to the sea. Locals are familiar with the concept of 'beach life' requiring a bit of ruggedness—like navigating the sandy access road and bringing their own gear—and they understand that the trade-off is worth it for a view and location that are simply unattainable anywhere else at this price point.
The environment is perfect for the local angler who knows the fishing reputation of the South County breachways and for families who love the quiet, clean beach setting. While the sites are close and the amenities are basic, this spot fosters a friendly, community-oriented atmosphere among fellow Rhode Island RVers. It is an authentic, rugged coastal adventure that showcases the wild beauty of the state's shore, making it an irreplaceable gem for those who appreciate true beachfront dry camping.

Was disappointed when first pulled in since you don't have water view for most sites. The last mile plus in is really rough since you're driving on sand packed road. But once set up I enjoyed it cause it's a short distance to walk the beach. Beach is nice and quiet. Had group of musicians close by but loved their music and the campground staff enforced quiet hours. The sites are close but I've had much worse. I would stay again with low costs. No amenities but location makes up for it.

Jul 23, 2025 · Dianne DinneanThis beach holds a special place in my heart...Best beach it's so clean blue water. It's just very beautiful at the breachway.
Aug 27, 2025 · Carolyn JarretBest beach in RI. Never gets crowded because of their small parking lot! So people are not sitting on top of each other.
Jul 19, 2025 · Sam DayonCassette toilets that are plumbed in not allowed even though we are self contained. Details regarding that are totally buried on another separate web page, so it’s deceptive at best. They turned us away and no refunds given. If your black water isn’t “permanently fixed” DO NOT make a reservation here.
