Introduction / Overview
For generations of Rhode Islanders, the name **Camp Fuller - By the Sea** has been synonymous with summer, salt air, and life-changing experiences. Established in 1887 and located on the scenic shores of Point Judith Salt Pond in South Kingstown, this historic institution—a branch of the Greater Providence YMCA—is one of New England’s most cherished traditional overnight camps. It is not a typical public campground for general recreational vehicle or tent camping; rather, it is a dedicated, rustic, co-educational summer camp primarily serving youth from ages 7 to 17, and offering specialized programs like family camp weekends.
Camp Fuller prides itself on a foundation of core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility, and Passion. The atmosphere is designed to be unplugged, encouraging campers to build relationships, develop competence in new skills, and create lifelong memories away from the distractions of technology. With its unique location providing both coastal access and acres of woodland, it offers a diverse range of water and land activities that cater to every interest. For Rhode Island families, this camp represents a valuable local resource, a rite of passage for youth seeking independence, and a cherished annual tradition for multi-generational visits during family camp sessions.
The camp experience is truly traditional and deliberately rustic. Accommodations are in cabins, often without electricity or lights, fostering a focus on community and the natural environment. While some past reviews have highlighted challenges common to all rustic, overnight youth camps—such as late-night cabin chatter, which can lead to exhaustion, or issues with simple comforts like fully stocked communal bathrooms—the overwhelming narrative remains one of powerful personal growth and cherished family memories, particularly for those who attend the dedicated, shorter, and often highly praised Family Camp Weekends. Camp Fuller aims to provide a wholesome, engaging, and formative experience guided by strong values.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
Camp Fuller - By the Sea is perfectly tailored for Rhode Island families for several compelling reasons. Firstly, its status as a local YMCA branch and a fixture of South County since 1887 gives it an inherent connection to the community—it’s a piece of Rhode Island history where parents and even grandparents may have attended themselves. It provides a unique, homegrown experience.
Secondly, the camp's exceptional coastal location on Point Judith Pond offers the best of Rhode Island’s natural environment. For youth, this means learning to sail, kayak, and engage in marine biology in a safe, supervised coastal setting that many other inland camps simply cannot match. This local resource allows children to develop unique, highly valued skills deeply tied to Rhode Island’s maritime culture.
Finally, Camp Fuller provides a crucial service in today's digital world: a traditional, unplugged, values-driven environment. While the rustic nature is an adjustment, it is an intentional one, designed to build resilience, independence, and strong interpersonal skills—core values highly sought after by local parents. I’m incredibly disappointed in this camp. Although my daughter had fun, she came home from camp, completely exhausted and under nourished. sleeping was not well reinforced at all and she was kept awake until late at night after 10:30 most days and awoken usually before 6 AM every day by chit chat in her cabin. Additionally, terrible food choices were offered to the children. She said she had a half a piece of ham and a small cup of peas one night for dinner and that was it. Additionally, the level of candy intake that was allowed was absurd. Childhood obesity is a real thing. There should be nutritious snacks offered and kids should not be allowed to hoard candy and eat it at Will whenever they want in their bunks. Kids don’t make good decisions and adults should be making better decisions for them while they are there under their supervision. The bathrooms were in horrid condition when I went all 3 weekends to pick up and drop off kids with toilet paper only in one stall. There were also mean girl cliques in the cabin which created a less than favorable situation for my daughter and her friend for their two week stay.
