This address places it directly along U.S. Highway 98, a major road in Florida, making it relatively easy to find and access. Its proximity to US-98 means that while you can "still hear the vehicles driving by," it also offers convenient access for campers arriving from various parts of Florida. The campsite is part of the larger Chandler Slough Management Area, which is typically overseen by the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) or the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). These management areas often require specific permits for camping or access, so it's always advisable to check with the managing authority before your visit.
The location being directly on a highway makes it more accessible than truly deep-wilderness primitive sites. Parking is generally available directly at or near the designated camping spots. While it’s basic camping, the ease of access from a main road is a significant advantage for those who prefer not to navigate extensive unpaved routes. This also makes it a convenient stop for travelers or for locals looking for a quick, straightforward nature escape without a long journey into remote areas. Signage leading to the campsite might be minimal due to its basic nature, so relying on GPS and being aware of the general location along US-98 in Okeechobee is recommended. Its accessibility makes it a practical choice for both weekend getaways and even overnight stays for those passing through.

It is highly recommended that anyone planning to visit Chandler Slough West Campsite contact the relevant land management agency (e.g., South Florida Water Management District or Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission) for the most current information on access requirements, any necessary permits, and current conditions or regulations, especially regarding hunting seasons and burn bans. Basic camping. There are a few spots with rings and tables. Too many people leave their trash out there! So many cans and plastic bags. Please do not trash these places, we're lucky enough to have them to go hang out or camp. Didn't really see any wildlife. It's close to the road so you can still hear the vehicles driving by. **camped overnight and didn't have any issues. A lot of hunters walked by first thing in the morning but they were quiet. The area was a lot cleaner than before and even one new fire pit! The new fire pit is great and we appreciated it so much.

Apr 08, 2023 · DoubleA1974This should have been a 5 star rating. Area is primitive, quiet, beautiful for camping. BUT...granted, we knew it was a public use area and that beyond the no hunting zone there would be hunters out this time of year. We expected to hear gunshots, dogs, etc. But at a distance. We are avid hunters ourselves, but still expected the campsites to be safe zones where we could safely stay with family as it clearly shows on the area maps. Not the case. 1st night we have a truck and dogs running just behind our campsite. 1st morning in we have hunters approach on foot from behind us, almost shooting our dog laying under a tree because he thought it was a hog. Thank God he barked and alerted my husband to them and he was able to approach the guy and his lady. When my husband spoke with the couple they said they saw no boundary or hunt free zone markers. Upon investigation - none posted anywhere except campsite indicators along the original trail into camp area. Most of these people are parking and walking in around behind the camp sites and never see those. 2nd morning - gunshot so close to our camp that we could hear their conversation afterward. 3rd evening dog screaming, gunshot so close to camp I could literally feel it and a few minutes later hunters walk by with a small pig slung over their shoulder. As we were leaving our final day we encountered another hunter exiting the woods with his gun from right next to our campsite. Made for a very nerve wracking experience. Wonder how much worse it would have been if it hadn't been raining for most of the trip. Afraid to leave the campsite to walk around or explore or even use the bathroom for fear of being mistaken for prey.
