Hickory Hammock Equestrian Campground is distinguished by its focus on a peaceful and natural experience. While it falls into the category of primitive camping, eschewing luxurious amenities like heated showers or flush toilets, it excels in providing exactly what the discerning nature lover needs. As one glowing review puts it, "Not luxurious in that way but exactly what I needed!" This sentiment perfectly captures the essence of the campground: it's about connecting with nature in a pristine environment, not about resort-style comforts. The consistent praise for "immaculate facilities," "Pristine vault toilet and an outdoor shower," and "Very well-kept campsite" highlights a remarkable dedication to cleanliness and maintenance, which is a rare and highly valued quality in primitive camping settings.
The atmosphere at Hickory Hammock is consistently described as "Peaceful, quiet, beautiful." This speaks to its ability to offer a genuine respite from noise and crowds, allowing visitors to fully appreciate the "lot of wildlife" that calls this area home. The presence of a "really beautiful and maintained trail that is connected to the campground" further enhances its appeal, inviting campers to explore the natural surroundings, whether on foot or, for equestrian enthusiasts, on horseback. The fact that it is "not crowded at all" for some visitors underscores its capacity to provide a serene and unhurried experience, even during what might be busier times for other campgrounds.
While one reviewer noted "unnecessary friction" with the camp host taking their job "very seriously," this feedback, while personal, also indirectly points to a high level of dedication to maintaining park rules and ensuring a quality experience for all. This strictness, when balanced, contributes to the overall "well-kept" nature of the campsite. It suggests that the management is committed to preserving the peaceful and pristine environment that so many visitors cherish.

Hickory Hammock Equestrian Campground is conveniently located at 4900 US-98, Lorida, FL 33857, USA. This address places it directly on U.S. Highway 98, a significant east-west route that traverses Central Florida. This direct highway access is a major advantage for campers, especially those towing horse trailers or RVs, ensuring straightforward navigation and easy arrival.
The campground's location in Lorida, within Highlands County, situates it in a primarily rural and natural part of Florida. This offers a peaceful retreat away from the hustle and bustle of major metropolitan areas. Despite its secluded feel, being on US-98 provides reasonable accessibility to essential services in nearby towns, such as gas stations, basic grocery stores, and local eateries. This balance ensures that campers can enjoy a primitive experience without being entirely cut off from necessities.
A key aspect of its location is its direct connection to "a really beautiful and maintained trail." These trails are often part of larger multi-use systems that cater to hikers, horseback riders, and sometimes cyclists, offering extensive opportunities for exploration of Florida's diverse ecosystems. The surrounding area is rich in wildlife, as noted by reviewers, providing excellent chances for birdwatching, wildlife photography, and nature observation.
For equestrian enthusiasts, the location provides direct access for horses, often leading to designated riding trails. While the campground provides a "peaceful, quiet" atmosphere, its direct highway access (US-98) means it's not entirely isolated. This proximity to a major road, however, generally facilitates easier access compared to more remote primitive sites, striking a good balance for those seeking a tranquil but reachable outdoor adventure in Florida.
