These public lands offer unique opportunities for outdoor recreation, and tucked away in the serene landscapes near Wellston is a specific US Forest Service campground that provides a rustic, back-to-basics camping experience. While the name "US Forest Service" refers to the managing body rather than a specific campground name, this particular location at 870 N Tippy Dam Rd offers a distinct charm for those seeking a quiet escape into Michigan's natural beauty.
This campground is characterized by its intimate scale, featuring only 8 available sites. This small size contributes to a more secluded and less commercialized atmosphere, which is highly valued by many campers. It caters primarily to tent campers, offering a genuine connection with the outdoors without the extensive amenities of larger, more developed campgrounds. Visitors who appreciate simplicity, tranquility, and the raw beauty of the forest will find this location particularly appealing. It's a place where the sounds of nature prevail, offering a true respite from the demands of modern life.
While the campground excels in providing a rustic experience, it's worth noting that its popularity, particularly for such a limited number of sites, can lead to challenges with availability. Some campers have observed practices of "land grabbing," where sites are occupied by minimal gear days in advance of a full setup, particularly before popular weekends. This highlights the high demand for such a peaceful and well-located spot. Despite these occasional challenges, the core offering of a serene, natural environment remains its strong suit, providing an excellent option for Michiganders seeking an authentic camping adventure.

Customer Reviews
A Small campground with 8 available sites. People will toss a tent and chair on a site (s) and not occupy it for days, if not a week before a popular camping weekend, just to lock it up. Today a guy and his wife put tents up on three separate sites around theirs. Land grabbers .
