Scheck's Place State Forest Campground is situated at 6069 Brown Bridge Rd, Traverse City, MI 49696, USA. This address places it within the vast and beautiful Pere Marquette State Forest, southeast of downtown Traverse City. Its location is a key aspect of its appeal, offering a serene, natural setting while still being within a reasonable distance of a major Northern Michigan hub.
For those traveling from various parts of Michigan, the campground is accessible via state highways that lead into the Traverse City area, and then along county and local roads like Brown Bridge Road. While it feels removed from urban hustle, it's not so remote as to be difficult to reach. This balance makes it a convenient option for many Michiganders seeking a true forest camping experience without an excessively long and complicated journey.
The accessibility of the campground extends beyond just road access to its direct connection with the Boardman River. This prime riverfront location means campers have immediate access for activities like canoeing, kayaking, tubing, and fishing. Furthermore, its position within a state forest ensures direct access to an extensive network of multi-use trails. These trails are a significant draw for ORV (Off-Road Vehicle) riders, including quad and dirt bike enthusiasts, as well as horseback riders, who can often access trails that lead for miles, even connecting to other areas like Kalkaska. This seamless integration of the campground with major recreational assets is a significant advantage.
While the setting is rustic, the relatively close proximity to Traverse City means that campers can easily resupply or access additional services if needed, striking a balance between wilderness immersion and practical convenience. Promotions or Special Offers:
As a Michigan State Forest Campground managed by the DNR, Scheck's Place typically operates on a standardized fee structure. Direct promotions or special offers in the traditional sense (like discounts or packages) are not commonly available. However, the value provided by state forest campgrounds often comes from their affordable nightly rates compared to private campgrounds, especially given their prime access to natural resources and extensive trail systems.
Potential ways to consider "offers" or value:
- Michigan Recreation Passport: Required for vehicle entry to all Michigan state parks and recreation areas, including state forest campgrounds. Purchasing an annual Recreation Passport (available when renewing your license plate) offers significant savings for frequent visitors compared to daily passes. This is arguably the best "deal" for any Michigan resident regularly using state recreational facilities.
- Standard Nightly Rates: The inherent "offer" is the relatively low cost of a rustic campsite providing access to unparalleled outdoor recreation.
- DNR Fee Structure: Always check the Michigan DNR website or contact the specific park for the most current fee schedule. Fees are standardized across similar types of campgrounds.
Since Scheck's Place emphasizes a rustic, public land experience, its appeal lies in its natural assets and affordability rather than commercial promotions. The "offer" is the access to amazing trails and river activities at a state-regulated price.

Customer Reviews
Convenient location for accessing the river. There are a total of about 30 sites, 10 on one side of the road where the main boat/canoe launch is, and 20 on the other side. Only the water pump on the side of the main boat/canoe launch was working when I visited. There's minimal privacy between the sites, most of them are very open with no vegetation between or hiding them from the road. Would've rated it higher if the sites were more private and if both water pumps were in service. There are also a few places to fish or put in a canoe/kayak between this campground and the forks state forest campground.
My sons and I camp here with our quad and dirt bikes every spring. There are a ton of trails for riding! In fact, you can ride all the way to Kalkaska. Be sure to watch for horses from nearby Ranch Rudolph. My boys love the rope swing in Boardman River. We actually drive up the road to the horse camping part of Scheck's and float on tubes down to our campsite. It's only about a 10- or 15-minute trip ... yeah the water is cold, but it's nice and refreshing on a hot day.
Love this place. Tucked away in the backwoods. Stay off Country Road, seasonal two tracks! You want to enter via Brown Bridge Road/Scharman Rd. We always get campsite 29, it’s right on the river and an east kayak launch. Or you could go the 3.3 miles down to Forks campground and launch there and paddle back to the campsite.
Beautiful campground on the Boardman River! Fire rings at each site. Clean well kept vault toilets. Hand pump potable water. Canoe launch with easy access and decent parking. Fishing deck with wheelchair ramp accessible. ORV and snowmobile trails accessible in every direction!
This is a very nice primitive campground with water available and pit toilets situated on the banks of the beautiful Boardman River.
