Unlike some more commercialized sites, here you’ll find a focus on simplicity and the raw beauty of the landscape. It's a place where the sounds of nature, rather than motors, dominate, making it a "happy place" for many returning visitors. The allure lies in its peaceful setting, where the vast majority of the surrounding shoreline remains natural state or national forest land, providing an expansive sense of untouched wilderness. This unique characteristic means you won't encounter endless private properties or noisy sport boats, allowing for a genuinely tranquil and restorative experience. It's the perfect spot for Michiganders eager to embrace the quiet beauty of their home state.
Tippy Dam Campground-MDNR is conveniently located on River Rd, Brethren, MI 49619, USA. This prime location places it directly on the banks of Tippy Dam Pond, a wide section of the Manistee River created by the Tippy Dam. Situated in Manistee County, in the scenic northwestern Lower Peninsula, the campground is easily accessible for residents traveling from various parts of Michigan. Access typically involves well-maintained state and county roads, transitioning into the more rural routes that lead directly to the campground.
The campground’s address provides excellent access to the vast outdoor recreational opportunities that the region offers. Its proximity to the Manistee National Forest means campers are surrounded by extensive public lands, ideal for hiking, hunting, and wildlife viewing. The dam itself and the river upstream and downstream are renowned fishing destinations. While the campground offers a rustic experience without electric hookups, its accessibility ensures that you can reach this peaceful retreat without significant travel complications, allowing for a seamless transition from your journey to your natural escape.
- Rustic Campsites: The campground offers a selection of clean, level sites, each with plenty of room for a small camper and a tent. These sites are designed for a traditional, rustic camping experience, without electric hookups.
- Picnic Tables and Fire Pits: Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and a fire pit, providing essential amenities for outdoor cooking and enjoying campfires under the stars.
- Vault Toilets: The campground provides two sets of outhouses (vault toilets) that are noted for being "fairly well maintained by the staff," offering basic and clean restroom facilities.
- Rustic Cabin: A unique offering is a rustic cabin available for rent. This cabin is described as "wonderful" and features 4 bunk beds, a gas heater, and a solar panel for light, providing a comfortable, yet still rustic, lodging option for those who prefer not to tent camp.
- Water Access: While potable water sources are common at MDNR campgrounds (typically hand pumps), it's important to verify current availability directly with the MDNR.
- Fishing/Swimming Dock and Stairs: On the far side of the campground, there's a "really nice set of stairs and dock" out on the lake. This feature is ideal for fishing directly from the dock, swimming, or launching a small paddle boat or kayak.

This large body of water, primarily surrounded by state or national forest land, ensures a quiet environment without the disturbance of heavy boat traffic or private property lines, offering "beauty around every corner."

- Rustic and Natural Ambiance: The absence of power hookups at most sites and the prevalence of tent camping contribute to a genuinely rustic atmosphere. This is a significant highlight for those who prefer a less commercialized and more authentic outdoor experience, with fewer generators typically running compared to other sites.
- Trails to the Water: Kids, and adults alike, love the "trails down to the water," providing easy and enjoyable access to the pond for exploration, fishing, or simply enjoying the views.
- Well-Maintained Facilities (for Rustic): Despite being rustic, the "very nice campsites" and "clean pit toilets" indicate good maintenance, ensuring a comfortable experience within the rustic framework.
- Abundant Public Land Access: The unique feature of having the entire shoreline of Tippy Dam Pond mostly comprised of state or national forest land means campers have unparalleled access to vast public spaces for recreation and exploration.
- Rustic Cabin Option: The availability of a well-equipped rustic cabin offers a versatile lodging choice, particularly appealing for those looking for a slightly more sheltered experience while still embracing the campground's natural setting.

Customer Reviews
Very nice campsite, clean pit toilets, level sites with plenty of room for a small camper and a tent. My kids loved the trails down the the water. Our only complaint was the lack of quiet time enforcement. The first two nights of Labor Day weekend were great, but Sunday night a huge group of campers arrived and threw an absolute rager of a party at the site across from us. Until 4am! It was so awful for my husband in the tent. We had Site 19.
This is one of my happy places. Tippy Dam Pond, besides the occasional boat ramp (or the dam), is mostly left natural. And that really makes this campground special. You won't find sport boats zipping around the lake. You won't see a ton of people out on the water, besides those staying at the campground or national forest campground, and there's beauty around every corner. We go up yearly now for almost a week to hang out and fish the pond. But I can't understate how nice it is to be on a lake where the entire shoreline isn't someone's private property - but - state or national forest. It's just beautiful. The actual campground is fairly small, but well set up. Two sets of outhouses that are fairly well maintained by the staff. Each site has at least a table and fire pit. The cabin, while rustic, is wonderful with 4 bunk beds, gas heater and solar panel for light. The far side of the campground has a really nice set of stairs, and dock, out on the lake to fish from, swim from or launch a small paddle boat from. Because there isn't power at the campground, you don't typically see campers (a lot of tent camping). Which I find nice. Sometimes a person will run a generator but it isn't as common as other sites I've stayed at.
Amazing. Magical at night when the lightening bugs are out and the stars are so bright. Huge camping spots. Had a perfect trip there. Will be back. This is for camping not glamping. Very enjoyable.
Not one of the nicer DNR campgrounds I've been to. No water fill or dump station for campers, little lake access (there's 1 dock), and the bathrooms are extremely smelly. On the plus side, the sites are very large and well separated with vegetation.
A great place to take a fishing trip. Clean campgrounds with friendly people. Close enough to lake Michigan to take a day trip. Overall a great place to go.
