For many Wisconsinites, the call of the wild is a familiar and cherished sound. Whether it’s the rustle of leaves, the gentle flow of a river, or the quiet solitude of a forest, the desire to connect with nature runs deep. When it comes to finding the perfect spot to pitch a tent or park a small camper, options abound across the state, but few offer the unique appeal of Cooper Dam Campground. Located in the heart of Northern Wisconsin, this hidden gem provides an authentic, rustic, and remarkably accessible camping experience, making it a true asset for local outdoor enthusiasts. This article is crafted to help residents of Wisconsin discover the many reasons why Cooper Dam Campground should be on their radar for their next outdoor adventure.
Cooper Dam Campground is a remarkable and somewhat unique camping destination situated in Ogema, Wisconsin. What truly sets this campground apart is its distinction as one of the very few places in Wisconsin that offers free camping. This incredible benefit, coupled with the availability of on-site drinking water, makes it an exceptionally valuable resource for budget-conscious adventurers and those who appreciate a more rustic and natural setting. The campground is unofficially, yet effectively, maintained by a local hunting club in affiliation with the county park system, a testament to the community spirit and dedication to preserving this outdoor haven.
This collaborative effort ensures that while the camping experience is free, the facilities remain clean and well-maintained. Cooper Dam Campground caters to a variety of camping styles, featuring a large group site that has proven popular, particularly with hunters, and includes a convenient shelter building. In addition, there are several smaller, more private sites thoughtfully designed for individual tent campers or those with small camper rigs. Each of these smaller sites is equipped with essential amenities like at least one picnic table and a fire ring, with some even offering two, providing ample space for enjoying outdoor meals and cozy campfires. The ambiance here is one of peaceful serenity, with the soothing sounds of the nearby river contributing to the overall tranquility, making it an ideal escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Cooper Dam Campground is strategically located at 9104 County Line Rd, Ogema, WI 54459, USA. This address places it squarely in Price County, a region renowned for its vast forests, pristine lakes, and abundant outdoor recreational opportunities. One of the campground's most compelling features is its immediate proximity to the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. In fact, several of the campsites literally have national forest boundary signs just behind them, offering direct access to miles of hiking, hunting, and exploration within this magnificent natural expanse.
The campground's location off County Line Road provides relatively easy access, even though it offers a truly remote and natural feel. While the area is known for its expansive wilderness, the roads leading to Cooper Dam Campground are generally well-maintained, allowing for convenient travel for most vehicles and small campers. For those coming from larger Wisconsin cities, the drive offers a scenic journey through charming small towns and picturesque landscapes, setting the tone for a relaxing outdoor getaway. This blend of remote tranquility and accessible location makes Cooper Dam an ideal spot for local Wisconsinites looking for a genuine immersion in the state's natural beauty without venturing too far off the beaten path. Its positioning also makes it a prime base camp for exploring the wider national forest, whether for a day hike, fishing trip, or an extended hunting excursion.
Despite being a free campground that maintains a rustic charm, Cooper Dam Campground offers a surprising array of essential services that greatly enhance the camping experience for its visitors. These services are vital for comfortable and responsible outdoor enjoyment:
Cooper Dam Campground boasts several distinctive features and highlights that contribute to its popularity and appeal among Wisconsin outdoor enthusiasts:
Given that Cooper Dam Campground offers free camping, traditional "promotions" or "special offers" in the commercial sense do not apply. The inherent "special offer" is the free access itself, a significant benefit that distinguishes it from nearly all other campgrounds in Wisconsin. There are no fees for reserving a spot, no daily rates, and no seasonal passes to purchase.
However, the value of Cooper Dam lies in its consistent provision of free, maintained camping facilities. While the campground doesn't run sales or discounts, its core offering is a continuous promotion of accessible outdoor recreation. Visitors might consider the ongoing maintenance by the local hunting club and county park system as an invaluable, continuous "special offer" to the public, as it ensures the availability of drinking water, clean toilets, and maintained sites without any cost to the user. The primary "deal" is the ability to enjoy the beauty of Northern Wisconsin's wilderness without the financial outlay for lodging or site fees.
As Cooper Dam Campground is a free, rustic site largely maintained by local community efforts in conjunction with the county park system, direct contact information like a dedicated phone number for general inquiries is not typically available in the way a commercial campground would provide. However, you can find the location and general information through its address:
For specific questions regarding the park system or local area, it might be beneficial to contact the Price County Forestry and Parks Department, as they would likely have general oversight or information related to the campground. Their contact details can usually be found on the Price County official website. Local hunting clubs in the Ogema area might also be a source of information regarding conditions or group site usage, as they are actively involved in the campground’s upkeep.
Cooper Dam Campground is an outstanding and highly suitable destination for locals across Wisconsin, offering a unique blend of affordability, authentic outdoor experience, and community spirit. For Wisconsinites, who cherish their state's natural beauty and often seek ways to enjoy it without breaking the bank, Cooper Dam is a true gem. Its status as one of the few free campgrounds in Wisconsin, complete with on-site drinking water and clean vault toilets, makes it an incredibly accessible option for everyone, from seasoned outdoor adventurers to families looking for a simple, budget-friendly weekend getaway.
The campground's rustic nature appeals to those who genuinely appreciate a more natural and less commercialized camping experience. It’s perfect for tent campers and small camper rigs, providing a comfortable base for exploring the surrounding wilderness. Its immediate adjacency to the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest is a colossal advantage, offering unparalleled access to hunting, fishing, hiking, and wildlife observation opportunities right at your doorstep. This direct access means more time enjoying nature and less time traveling.
Moreover, the community involvement in maintaining the campground, particularly by the local hunting club, reflects a shared dedication to preserving Wisconsin’s outdoor heritage. This stewardship ensures the facilities remain clean and functional, fostering a welcoming atmosphere that many campers describe as friendly and inviting. Whether you're a hunter looking for a convenient base during the fall, a family seeking a cost-effective way to introduce children to camping, or simply an individual craving the peace and quiet of Northern Wisconsin’s forests, Cooper Dam Campground provides an exceptional value. It's more than just a place to stay; it's a testament to local collaboration and a gateway to the unparalleled natural beauty that Wisconsin offers, making it an ideal choice for any local seeking an authentic and accessible outdoor escape.
9104 County Line Rd, Ogema, WI 54459, USA
One of the only places in Wisconsin offering free camping with drinking water on-site. This campground appears to be maintained by a local hunting club in affiliation with the county park system. There’s a large group site popular with hunters that includes a shelter building. There are also half a dozen smaller, more private sites that appear designed for tents or small camper rigs. The smaller sites vary in size and all have at least one picnic table and fire ring; some have two. The campsites here are just outside the national forest. Some of the sites literally have national forest boundary signs behind them. When I visited in late September, the group area was filled with hunters and hunting dogs. The small campsites - offset nicely from the group area - were completely open. The hand pump was working and water tasted great. Several vault toilets are available throughout the campground; all were clean. Hats off to the local club keeping this place open and maintained for the public. A class act.
Dec 26, 2022 · Greg KruegerWhen I first started using this campground, I basically had it all to myself except for the hound bear hunters. The secret of this little gem is out now, and the campground is getting used more often in the fall. I met some really friendly people in the last couple of years while camping. Clean pit toilets, beautiful river sounds, and scenery.

Oct 13, 2020 · Michael JRight on the Jump River. Small but good sized sites which are spread out so you’re not right up on your neighbors unless you want. Some sites are grouped together. Picnic tables, fire pits, and outhouses included. Our number one seller for this was it is free you can donate to keep this place beautiful. Slept like a baby listening to the babbling water, frogs, and crickets.
