Delaware Seashore State Park South Campground About
For Delaware locals, the stretch of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean is a treasured resource, offering endless opportunities for relaxation, recreation, and unforgettable experiences. Among the most sought-after destinations for immersing oneself in this coastal beauty is the Delaware Seashore State Park, and specifically, its South Campground. More than just a place to park your RV or pitch a tent, this campground provides a unique gateway to the iconic Delaware beaches, combining convenience with the natural allure of the ocean and bay.
Delaware Seashore State Park South Campground is renowned for offering a distinctive camping experience that blends the comforts of modern amenities with the raw beauty of the seashore. As one satisfied camper noted, it's about having the "expectation of a parking lot with sewer, water, and electric and then you will never be disappointed." This sentiment perfectly encapsulates the practical and highly functional nature of the campground, where convenience meets coastal living. Whether you're a seasoned RVer, a family looking for a beachside adventure, or simply someone yearning for the fresh salt air, this well-kept campground provides an ideal base for exploring everything the Delaware coast has to offer. From a local perspective, it represents a readily accessible and well-loved spot that truly allows you to make the most of our beautiful state's natural treasures.
Delaware Seashore State Park South Campground is ideally situated at 27101 Coastal Hwy, Bethany Beach, DE 19930, USA. This prime location places it right in the heart of Delaware's stunning Atlantic coastline, specifically nestled between the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Rehoboth and Indian River Bays to the west. The campground is notably positioned near the iconic Indian River Inlet Bridge, which features a separate walking and biking path, enhancing accessibility to both sides of the inlet and its various attractions.
For Delaware residents, the campground's accessibility is a major draw. It's located directly on Delaware Route 1 (Coastal Highway), the primary north-south artery along the state's coast, making it incredibly easy to reach from all corners of Delaware.
- From Wilmington, the state's largest city, the drive is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic, particularly during peak summer weekends.
- From Dover, the state capital, the journey is typically just over an hour.
- Even for those coming from the western parts of Delaware, the route is straightforward and scenic.
The strategic placement also means that popular beach towns like Bethany Beach, Dewey Beach, and Rehoboth Beach are just a short drive or bike ride away, offering an abundance of dining, shopping, and entertainment options. The campground's close proximity to the beach – approximately 400 yards from the ocean – allows for easy walking access to the shoreline, a highly valued feature for beach lovers. While personal vehicles are essential for reaching the campground, once there, many attractions, including the beach, Indian River Inlet, and a cool restaurant, are within walking or biking distance. This blend of remote natural beauty and convenient access to coastal amenities makes the South Campground a truly desirable location for a Delaware beach getaway.
Delaware Seashore State Park South Campground is designed to provide a comfortable and convenient camping experience, particularly for RVers, but also accommodating tent campers. The services offered reflect its status as a well-equipped state park campground.

These services, particularly the prevalence of full hookup sites, significantly enhance the camping experience, allowing visitors to enjoy the coastal environment without sacrificing essential comforts.
Delaware Seashore State Park South Campground is rich in features and highlights that make it a standout destination for outdoor enthusiasts and beach lovers in Delaware.
- Direct Beach Access: A major highlight is the easy and direct access to the beautiful Atlantic Ocean beach, typically within a 400-yard walk from the campground. This allows for effortless enjoyment of swimming (with lifeguards on duty Memorial Day to Labor Day), sunbathing, beachcombing, and surf fishing.
- Indian River Inlet Proximity: The campground’s location at the Indian River Inlet offers unique recreational opportunities, including excellent fishing from the jetties and bulkheads, and boating activities from the nearby Indian River Marina, which provides boat slips, a boat ramp, fuel, bait, and tackle.
-
Recreational Diversity: Beyond the beach and inlet, the park offers a wide array of activities:
- Biking and Hiking: Several multi-use trails, including the path over the Indian River Inlet Bridge, are perfect for exploring the coastal landscape and accessing local towns.
- Water Sports: Opportunities for kayaking, paddleboarding, windsurfing, and sailing in the calmer bay waters.
- Crabbing and Clamming: Permitted in designated areas of the bays, providing a fun and unique activity.
- Birdwatching: The park is a prime location for observing a variety of bird species due to its position on a major migratory flight path.
- Family-Friendly Environment: The campground includes a playground, making it suitable for families with children. While one review noted issues with the playground during peak season, it remains an amenity for younger campers, especially during less crowded times.
- On-Site Dining: The presence of a "cool restaurant" (likely The Big Chill Beach Club at the South Inlet) within walking distance offers convenient dining options with ocean views, typically operating seasonally.
- Well-Maintained Grounds: Consistent feedback points to the campground being "very well kept" and having "clean/well maintained grounds and facilities," contributing to a pleasant stay.
- Off-Season Charm: Many locals prefer visiting during the off-season (October to April) when the park is less crowded, offering a more peaceful experience for activities like birdwatching, hiking, and exploring the Indian River Life-Saving Station Museum, which remains open year-round with varying hours. During winter months, parking is often free, and dogs are permitted on all beaches.
As a state park campground, Delaware Seashore State Park South Campground typically operates under standardized pricing and reservation policies set by Delaware State Parks. Therefore, traditional "promotions" or "special offers" in the commercial sense are uncommon. However, there are aspects that can be considered advantageous for locals and frequent visitors:
- Delaware State Parks Annual Pass: For frequent visitors to Delaware State Parks, purchasing an annual park pass can offer significant savings on daily entrance fees. While camping fees are separate, the pass covers the vehicle entrance fee, which is applicable from May to October. This is a considerable "offer" for those who plan multiple visits to any Delaware State Park throughout the year.
- Off-Season Value: While not a discount, visiting during the off-season (typically October through April) provides a different kind of "special offer." The campground is less crowded, offering a more tranquil experience, and vehicle entrance fees are typically waived during these months. This allows locals to enjoy the beauty of the Delaware coast at a quieter, more relaxed pace, often at a lower overall cost.
- Senior and Military Discounts: Delaware State Parks may offer specific discounts for Delaware residents who are seniors, veterans, or have certain disabilities. These discounts would apply to park entrance fees and potentially some camping fees, but specific eligibility criteria would need to be confirmed directly with Delaware State Parks.
- Reservation System: The availability of an online reservation system (via ReserveAmerica, the official booking platform for Delaware State Parks) is a valuable "service" that ensures campers can secure their desired dates well in advance, especially during the popular summer months. Reservations can be made up to six months in advance.
- "America the Beautiful" Access Pass: For eligible individuals with permanent disabilities, the "America the Beautiful – The National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Access Pass" can offer discounts on various federal recreation fees. While this is a federal pass, some state parks may honor it for certain benefits; it's advisable to inquire directly if this applies to camping fees at Delaware Seashore.
For the most current information on fees, reservation policies, and any specific discounts for which you might qualify, always refer to the official Delaware State Parks website or contact the park directly.

For Delaware residents, the Delaware Seashore State Park South Campground stands out as an exceptionally suitable and highly valued destination for a myriad of reasons, truly representing a local gem for coastal recreation.
Firstly, its prime location on Coastal Highway, directly between the Atlantic Ocean and the Inland Bays, makes it incredibly accessible for anyone living in the state. This means less travel time and more time enjoying the beautiful Delaware coast, whether it's for a weekend escape or a longer vacation. The convenience of being able to drive directly to a beachside camping spot with modern amenities is a significant draw for local families and outdoor enthusiasts.
Secondly, the campground offers a unique blend of comfort and natural immersion. With a large number of full hookup sites, it caters perfectly to RV owners who appreciate the conveniences of home while enjoying a beach vacation. For tent campers, the dedicated sites provide a more traditional experience, all within walking distance of the ocean. This versatility ensures that different camping styles can find their ideal setup. The presence of clean bathhouses, laundry facilities, and a camp store further enhances the comfort, making camping accessible and enjoyable for a wider range of people, including those who might be newer to the camping scene.
Moreover, the sheer abundance of recreational activities available directly from the campground is unparalleled. From swimming and sunbathing on the guarded beaches to fishing and crabbing in the inlet, and extensive opportunities for biking, hiking, and birdwatching, there's always something to do for every age and interest. This makes it an ideal spot for family vacations where everyone can find an activity they love. Even during the quieter off-season, locals can enjoy peaceful walks on the beach, excellent birding, and explore the historical Indian River Life-Saving Station Museum, experiencing a different, yet equally rewarding, side of the park.
While a previous review mentioned some issues with playground behavior during peak summer, this feedback also highlights a common local preference: visiting during the off-season. This allows Delawareans to fully appreciate the "beautiful campground that is very well kept" without the larger crowds, offering a more serene and reflective coastal experience. In essence, Delaware Seashore State Park South Campground is more than just a place to stay; it's a quintessential Delaware experience, providing locals with an accessible, comfortable, and activity-rich environment to create lasting memories by the sea.
Customer Reviews
This is our go to Delaware Beach. We always stay at the campground. Have the expectation of a parking lot with sewer, water, and electric and then you will never be disappointed. We actually prefer to come here during off-season when it’s not as busy. My boys have had negative experiences at the playground during peak summer season, including children peeing on the slides, comments about others weights, and races. They aren’t into all of that, so they prefer Delaware Seashore when it’s not so busy.
Beautiful campground that is very well kept. Easily accessible to beach by walking with a cool restaurant. You can also ride bikes here too!
Convenient access to peaceful beaches and boardwalks. Spaces are very close together, not permitting camp fires at sites helps keep the noise down.
Campground would be ideal for people who love to fish, or hang on the beach. There aren't many trees or amenities. But the sites are level and pull through. The Campground is clean and so are the many bathrooms. The ability to walk right out to the beach, restaurant, and fishing area is ideal. And this might be the quietest Campground we have ever stayed at. The most common offender of loud noises is the many seagulls.
I have been coming here for 5 years. The past 2 years we have seen the camp ground go down hill. With the surfers leaving left over fires and garbage to outdoor showers not working. This year we arrived to construction. I understood that everything must repaired and I appreciate it but the contractor used the parking lot right beside the camp sites. They are at work from 6 am to 7:30 pm. The noise and dust does not allow us to enjoy the beautiful weather. We were told before we arrived and when we arrived that we would still have beach access. If you wanted to get run over by a truck you could not be on the beach. By Wednesday they closed the beach. If I had known what I see I would have cancelled. We should have been given a discount or an opportunity to move to another location. I have called and was sent to 3 locations but was given a run around. And no call back. We pay to support this beautiful place to keep it open. We should be given the satisfaction not the construction company. I want to come back and have it the way it was.
