Elliott Lake Recreation Area About
For military personnel, retirees, and authorized Department of Defense (DoD) affiliates in Texas, a truly special and affordable escape awaits at Elliott Lake Recreation Area in Redwater. Tucked away within the beautiful wooded expanse of the Red River Army Depot, this campground offers a quiet and tranquil haven, perfect for unwinding and reconnecting with nature. It’s a destination that blends the affordability and security of a military facility with the serene beauty of an outdoor recreation spot, making it a highly cherished perk for those who serve or have served.
Elliott Lake Recreation Area isn't just about camping; it's about providing a "beautiful place" to relax, as many visitors attest. Whether you're looking to park your RV, stay in a cozy cabin, or simply enjoy a day by the lake, this facility offers a range of options tailored to provide comfort and enjoyment. From its well-maintained grounds to its friendly staff, it stands out as a top choice for military families seeking a peaceful retreat in Northeast Texas.
Elliott Lake Recreation Area is located within the Red River Army Depot in Redwater, Texas, specifically at the address 9PMJ+2W, Redwater, TX 75567, USA. Its unique location within a military installation means that access is restricted to authorized users. This typically includes Active Duty, National Guard, Reservists, Retired Military, 0-100% Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Purple Heart Recipients, Former POWs, Veteran Caregivers, and Federal and State Civilians.
To enter the Depot and reach the recreation area, visitors must go through the Main Gate (I-30 exit 207). On weekdays, you’ll need to stop at the Visitors Control Center (VCC), a brown building west of the main gate, to register and obtain an MWR (Morale, Welfare, and Recreation) badge for each person entering. A DoD ID card and driver's license are required. On weekends, the gate guards can issue these passes. While the campground is approximately 6-7 miles inside the gate, away from external amenities, the journey is well worth it for the quiet and seclusion. It’s important to note that base stickers are not recognized, and some inspection protocols may be in place. While GPS might lead you close, it's crucial to follow the directions to the Main Gate first, as detailed on military campground resources, to ensure proper entry.
Elliott Lake Recreation Area provides a range of services designed to make your stay comfortable and convenient, catering to both RV campers and cabin guests.
- RV Full Hookups: The park offers a significant number of full hookup RV sites (44 total), complete with 30 and 50-amp electricity, water, and sewer connections. Some sites are marked with a 14-day limit, while others may allow for longer stays.
- Cabins: A variety of cabins are available, including rustic and two-bed, two-bath options. Reviewers note that cabins are often very clean and spacious. Guests are typically required to bring their own linens for standard cabins, though "TDY Cabins" may include them.
- Tent Camping: Primitive tent spots (without water or electricity) are available, along with designated camper spots where tents are also allowed at the camper rate.
- Laundry Facilities: The recreation area offers "cheap laundry facilities," a valuable amenity for longer stays.
- Restrooms and Showers: Clean and accessible restroom and shower facilities are provided for all guests.
- Country Store: A small country store on-site offers limited supplies and is also where campers can register upon arrival. The staff at this store are consistently praised for being "wonderful."
- Free Wi-Fi: Complimentary Wi-Fi is available in the RV Park, supporting mobile devices and streaming.
- Equipment Rentals: The facility offers rentals for outdoor equipment such as boats, canoes, kayaks, sailboats, and mountain bikes, enhancing recreational opportunities.
- Picnic Areas and Grills: Grills and picnic tables are available for outdoor cooking and dining.
These services collectively ensure that visitors have access to essential comforts while enjoying the natural beauty of the area.
Elliott Lake Recreation Area distinguishes itself with several key features that enhance the experience for its authorized users, making it a highly desirable destination.
- Beautiful and Quiet Setting: The primary highlight is the campground's serene and picturesque location, "tucked away in the woods near Elliott Lake." This provides a peaceful environment ideal for relaxation and escaping the hustle and bustle of daily life. Even in summer, despite potentially higher visitor numbers, its natural tranquility remains a strong point.
- Versatile Accommodations: The availability of both RV full hookups and comfortable cabins caters to diverse preferences. Reviewers specifically mention "very nice playground" and a "beach," indicating family-friendly amenities. The cabins, like the "two bed and bath cabin," are noted for being "very clean and spacious."
- Direct Lake Access and Activities: Elliott Lake itself is a central feature. Guests can enjoy swimming at the beach, fishing, and various boating activities. The availability of boat rentals (canoes, kayaks, sailboats) makes it easy to get out on the water.
- Recreational Amenities for Families: A "very nice playground" provides a safe and fun area for children, while the beach offers a sandy spot for relaxation and water play.
- Affordable Pricing: At a reported $15 a night for RV sites, it offers an "outstanding perk for military families," making it an incredibly budget-friendly option for quality outdoor recreation. Discounts like the $5 a day Golden Age/Access/America the Beautiful discount on RV sites further enhance affordability.
- Friendly and Helpful Staff: Consistent reviews highlight the "wonderful" staff at the country store and generally friendly and helpful personnel, contributing to a welcoming and supportive atmosphere.
- Security and Seclusion: Being located within the Red River Army Depot provides an inherent level of security. While entry requires DoD access, once inside, the remote location (6-7 miles from the main gate) ensures a secluded and peaceful environment away from external noise and traffic.
- First-Come, First-Served (FCFS) for Sites: While this can be a "downside" if the park is full, it also means spontaneity is possible. The ability to call ahead for a confirmation on availability helps mitigate this. Cabin reservations are accepted up to 6 months in advance.
These highlights collectively paint a picture of a well-rounded and highly valued recreation area designed specifically with the needs of authorized military personnel and their families in mind.
Elliott Lake Recreation Area, as a facility operated by the Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) program within the Red River Army Depot, offers inherent "perks" and discounts primarily for its authorized user base. These aren't typically "promotions" in the commercial sense, but rather a structured benefit.
- Affordable Rates: The most significant and consistent "special offer" is the highly competitive pricing for military members and other authorized users. As noted in reviews, RV sites can be as low as $15 a night, which is exceptionally low compared to civilian campgrounds offering similar amenities.
- Federal Pass Discounts: The park offers a $5 a day discount on RV sites for holders of Golden Age/Access/America the Beautiful passes, further reducing the cost for eligible seniors and individuals with disabilities.
- Military-Specific Pricing: The entire pricing structure is a direct benefit for active duty, retired military, and other authorized DoD ID cardholders, providing exclusive access to these low rates.
Due to its MWR status, traditional commercial promotions (like "buy one night, get one free") are rare. The value lies in the consistent, significantly discounted rates for an exclusive user group. For the most current pricing on cabins and RV sites, and to confirm eligibility requirements, it is always best to contact Elliott Lake Recreation Area directly.

Customer Reviews
Beautiful place! Quiet and tucked away in the woods near Elliott lake. It may be busier and not as quiet in the summer, but it’s a great place to Relax! Cabins and RV full hook ups! Very nice playground, beach and cheap laundry facilities. MUST HAVE DoD access card to enter the Depot. Staff at the country store are wonderful. The only downside is it’s FCFS, so you could get turned away if they are full but you can call ahead and they may be able to confirm if they think they will have room. $15 a night! A wonderful perk for military families. 🇺🇸
The staff was friendly and helpful. We had the two bed and bath cabin. It was very clean and spacious.
