Gatewood Group Campground is located in Whitmer, WV 26296, USA. This address places it deep within the scenic and vast Monongahela National Forest, renowned for its rugged beauty and extensive outdoor recreational opportunities. Its location is a key aspect of its appeal, offering a truly secluded and immersive wilderness experience.
Accessibility to Gatewood Group Campground requires a bit of mindful driving. Reviewers note that the route "turns into a one lane mountain road on the way to the campsite so be mindful of that." However, they also reassure that it wasn't a significant issue, stating, "We had no problem getting over for passing cars." The road directly to the campsite is described as "probably the worst of it but still wasn't too bad," with a recommendation to "be careful if you are driving a smaller vehicle though," implying that a higher-clearance vehicle might be more comfortable, but it's generally manageable. It "looks like they try to keep the roads well maintained." This balance means the campground feels remote and private, yet remains accessible for most standard vehicles driven carefully. Being located in Whitmer offers a gateway to some of West Virginia's most pristine natural areas. While it's secluded, this location means abundant opportunities for exploring trails, observing wildlife, and enjoying the serene environment that the Monongahela National Forest provides. The journey itself becomes part of the adventure, leading you to a truly quiet and wild setting.
Gatewood Group Campground provides a selection of essential services and facilities designed to support a primitive group camping experience, focusing on basic needs within a natural setting.

As a group campground primarily focused on primitive camping within the national forest system, Gatewood Group Campground typically does not offer commercial "promotions or special offers" in the traditional sense, such as discounted rates or package deals. Any applicable fees for reserving the group campsite would be part of the standard Forest Service reservation system. One of the people that stayed before us threw pork chops at the edge of the woods which my dogs got and ended up getting sick from & they threw up a few times. Thankfully that's all that happened! We threw them away of course but it attracted many flies. I'm not sure if it's always like that or just because people dumped their leftover dinner in the woods. Tsk tsk. The campsite itself is beautiful! You don't even need to go to the field to star gaze. The field is actually a wildlife management area. No camping in it. The grass was about knee high so we didn't walk thru it. The grass around the campsite was mowed. We heard coyotes at night & saw a bobcat down the road from the site. Lots of deer are in the area as well. There are 8 picnic tables. 3 are around the campfire ring. There is only *one campfire ring*. No other fires are permitted. The 2 vault toilets are pretty clean & have toilet paper & hand sanitizer in them. There are quite a few trails around the campsite. We walked Seneca creek trail & it was beautiful! It turns into a one lane mountain road on the way to the campsite so be mindful of that. We had no problem getting over for passing cars. The drive wasn't too bad. We're driving a GMC Acadia FWD. The road to the campsite is probably the worst of it but still wasn't too bad. Be careful if you are driving a smaller vehicle though. It looks like they try to keep the roads well maintained. The only real complaints I have are: 1. The flies were awful. Just everywhere. 2. There is only ONE campfire ring so if you're in a group & you all plan on cooking over the fire it may take some time as you'll have to take turns. 3. Absolutely need to put in tent pads. 4. Leave No Trace! We did find garbage around the campsite along with the pork chops.
Aug 23, 2024 · Kratos GOWThe site has enough space for about 20 people. There is a field close by the camp site for star gazing. It is kinda isolated so don't expect a lot of amenties. Two pit toilet.
