Are you a Michigander looking to escape the everyday hustle and immerse yourself in the calming embrace of nature? Look no further than Haakwood State Forest Campground in Wolverine, MI. This hidden gem offers a genuine rustic camping experience, allowing you to truly disconnect and recharge amidst the beautiful northern Michigan landscape. It's the kind of place where the sounds of the Sturgeon River and the rustling leaves replace traffic noise, and starry nights are truly unforgettable.
Haakwood State Forest Campground isn't just a place to pitch a tent; it's an invitation to rediscover the simple joys of outdoor living. Whether you’re a seasoned camper or new to the rustic scene, this campground provides a welcoming environment where you can unwind, explore, and create lasting memories. Many local campers consider it a personal sanctuary, a go-to spot when they crave a genuine connection with Michigan's stunning natural beauty. The campground is known for its quiet atmosphere and spacious sites, allowing for a sense of privacy that can be hard to find in more developed campgrounds. It’s a perfect option for those who appreciate getting “back to nature” without being too far off the beaten path.
Haakwood State Forest Campground boasts an ideal location for those seeking both tranquility and convenient access to local amenities. Situated at 11000 S Straits Hwy, Wolverine, MI 49799, USA, it’s easily accessible from major routes, making your journey to relaxation straightforward. The campground is nestled just two miles north of Wolverine via Old 27, then a short drive east on Campground Road. This proximity to Wolverine means you're never too far from basic supplies, should you need to replenish anything during your stay.
What truly sets Haakwood apart is its direct connection to the stunning Sturgeon River, which flows alongside the campground. This provides not only beautiful scenery but also opportunities for water-based activities right from your campsite. Furthermore, its location places it close to other beloved northern Michigan towns like Indian River, offering additional options for dining, shopping, or exploring local attractions. The convenience of being near I-75 makes it an excellent stopover point for travelers heading further north or south, but it also serves as a prime destination for extended stays. Campers often praise its quiet, isolated feel despite its accessible location, making it a perfect blend of convenience and wilderness.
As a state forest campground, Haakwood typically operates under the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) fee structure. This means that while there aren't often specific "promotions" in the traditional sense like private campgrounds might offer, visitors will need a Michigan Recreation Passport in addition to the campsite fee. The Recreation Passport provides annual access to all Michigan state parks and recreation areas, which is an excellent value for frequent outdoor adventurers across the state. It can be purchased when you renew your license plate or at any state park or DNR customer service center. The nightly rate for a campsite is generally a set fee, which is often around $20, but it's always advisable to check the most current rates on the Michigan DNR website or contact the campground directly for the latest information. While there are no short-term promotional codes, the inherent value of a rustic, peaceful escape in such a beautiful natural setting is a promotion in itself for Michigan residents.

Awesome campground! Pit toilets, hand pump well. If you like getting back to nature this is the perfect place. Quiet, not busy while I was there, big sites, beautiful river, close to Wolverine and not far from Indian River. We will be returning!
Aug 15, 2023 · MrCoyotebobOne of the most breathtaking campsites I’ve ever stayed at! There was plenty of space for tents or campers, but also hammock friendly. Our campsite had trails right down to the water! There are apple trees all throughout the park and it was such a treat to pick them right off the tree. The area was clean, bathrooms maintained, and access to a water pump. Each site had a fire pit and picnic table. I can’t wait until we can return!
Sep 23, 2023 · Lexie GriffithsThis spot truly is a gem. Hidden away from allot. But we'll worth the camping and fishing.
May 17, 2022 · Justin FitzpatrickNice little spot.. there's a TON of Poison Ivy around the sites though.. all in all a good get away!
