Introduction / Overview
For Minnesota locals seeking an authentic and expansive outdoor experience on the prairie, the Lac qui Parle Upper Campground offers a truly unique destination. Located within the scenic Lac qui Parle State Park near the town of Watson, this campground is a gateway to the 'lake that speaks,' a French translation of the Dakota name for the body of water. The location is steeped in history and natural wonder, situated where the Minnesota River Valley broadens into the lake, a crucial stop on the flyway for migratory waterfowl.
The Upper Campground is characterized by its spacious, open prairie setting, standing atop a bluff that provides stunning, unobstructed views of the Lac qui Parle Lake and the breathtaking Minnesota sky—perfect for catching both sunsets and, on clear nights, incredible displays of stars or even the Northern Lights. Though newer and with fewer mature trees than the permanently closed lower campground area, the sites are thoughtfully designed, well-spaced, and offer a mix of amenities to suit every type of camper, from large RVs to tent-only setups. It’s an ideal base camp for anglers, birdwatchers, history enthusiasts, and anyone looking to unplug and connect with the natural landscape of western Minnesota.
This facility, as part of the State Park system, is known for its professional operation and friendly staff, who are highly regarded by visitors for their helpfulness. While the focus here is undeniably on nature and the vast open space, the campground provides essential modern facilities to ensure a comfortable stay, making it a highly suitable and affordable outdoor retreat for Minnesotans.

The Upper Campground is spacious, on open prairie with few trees. Unfortunately there were too many clouds for much stargazing, but we did catch the Northern Lights! After quiet hours some of the other campers were quite loud and their kids were armed with military grade flashlights, but I understand that's beyond the park staff's control. We heard and saw quite a bit of water fowl on the state hike. Lots of places for fishing, and there's a bait shop nearby. The office staff were very friendly and helpful, and the kiddos loved exploring the interpretive center. The showers were very busy, but still took several cycles to heat up and the water pressure wasn't enough to wash sand from my littles' hair. We picked up quite a bit of trash along the park near the swimming beach, but otherwise the beach was very clean, but we were informed the lake was starting to turn. It's a short hike to Minnesota's oldest Cottonwood tree, but be forewarned that the path is a bit steep. The park also has several scenic lookouts.
Aug 07, 2023 · Heather AndersonNice campground (someday) right now it is mostly an open field. The upper campground is relatively new and it looks like they are setting it up to have nice privacy in the sites. The shower room is a bit small for the number of sites. There is only 2 toilets for the guys, but those 2 rooms are also unisex and have showers in them - so if you're a guy, be prepared to use the vault toilets on busy weekends. The sunset sky is amazing here overlooking the waterway. The hiking trails are more walking than hiking right now, but the old lower campground (that is permanently closed for camping) is still open for day use and has some nice trails - if you don't mind a short drive to get there. If you go to the lower camp you have to visit the map room - you truly get the scale of how huge the waterway is when you see it laid out like that.
Oct 02, 2022 · James FThis is a great wide open clean campground with alot of space between site. Very big rig friendly. Awsome bathrooms/shower and dump station. Some full hookup sites, some electric only site and some no hookup sites. Great sunset views. We will be back.
Jun 07, 2025 · W JohnNice State Park. A little open for my tastes, but it is an R.V Park for sure. We stayed in one of their cabins over Halloween weekend. Thankfully it had great heat! I wish my camera could have done the night sky justice. It was so dark and you could see every star. Absolutely stunning!
Nov 01, 2021 · Dawn DubeThis is a fairly new campground at Lac qui Parle State Park. Situated on the hill overlooking the lake below, it is pretty flat, wide open and almost devoid of trees for shade or privacy. The restroom facilities are quite nice. If you go camping to connect with nature, get back to basics and enjoy the views, the walk in sites are the *only* sites to look to. If you go camping to haul an entire 2nd home on wheels, not have to back it in and can’t live without elec or a/c, any of the other sites will work great. If you’re an in-betweener, there are some of the nicest cabins at any state park to be found here.
