Introduction / Overview
For Minnesotans organizing a large family reunion, a scout troop outing, or any major group gathering, finding a campsite that can accommodate everyone comfortably can be a challenge. Group Camp 2, located within a cherished local State Park near Churchill, MN, is designed precisely to meet this need. This facility offers a substantial, dedicated space where large parties can gather, spread out, and enjoy the pristine natural setting of one of Minnesota's most beautiful regions. Although the specific park name is not listed on the address, the location is strongly associated with Lake Maria State Park, an area renowned for preserving a rare segment of the historic “Big Woods”—a mix of maple, oak, and basswood forest that once covered parts of Southern Minnesota.
Group Camp 2 is celebrated by local users for its size and its provision of essential gathering amenities, including a covered picnic shelter and numerous picnic tables. It provides a rustic, nature-immersed experience that allows groups to unplug and bond under a canopy of trees. While it is noted for being close to the road, the abundant shade and spread-out nature of the site maintain a comfortable, dedicated space for activities. It is a fantastic option for groups seeking a communal space for both daytime activities and overnight stays within the welcoming embrace of a Minnesota State Park.
Location and Accessibility
The general location of Group Camp 2 is provided by the Geo-Code address: 2497+26, Churchill, MN 56265, USA. This places the facility in the area of Churchill, a region that connects local users to the popular outdoor offerings of the State Parks system. Given the known group camping facilities in the vicinity, this site is situated in an area rich with the typical recreational opportunities Minnesotans seek, such as hiking, cross-country skiing, and wildlife observation.
Accessibility is one of the distinct features of this site. Unlike more remote backcountry campsites, Group Camp 2 is noted by visitors for being very close to the park road. This proximity, while impacting the sense of complete isolation, is a significant benefit for groups requiring easy access for parking, unloading gear, and quick trips to the main facilities. For events requiring quick and easy setup, or for groups including members with limited mobility, this convenient access is highly valuable. Visitors should always check the official State Park website (likely the DNR site) for specific directions, operating seasons, and reservation requirements, as group camps often require reservations far in advance.
Services Offered
As a dedicated group camping area within a State Park system, Group Camp 2 focuses on providing the foundational services necessary for large, self-sufficient gatherings. It is a rustic setting, meaning modern conveniences are limited, encouraging a true connection with nature.
Covered Picnic Shelter: A dedicated, covered structure provides an essential communal space protected from sun and light rain, perfect for meal preparation, dining, and organized activities.
Ample Picnic Tables: The area is well-equipped with many picnic tables, allowing large groups to dine together or break into smaller activity clusters.
Toilet Facilities: The camp has its own designated pit toilet (vault toilet) for convenient, nearby sanitation, though visitors note that more modern campground bathrooms are also not far away.
Spacious, Shaded Area: The large, spread-out nature of the camp ensures sufficient room for multiple tents and activities, with generous tree cover providing welcome shade during Minnesota’s summer months.
Proximity to Main Facilities: Although the site is somewhat rustic, its closeness to the main park road suggests quick access to the primary campground's facilities, which typically include potable water sources and a trailer sanitation station.
Year-Round Potential: While specific operating dates can vary, many State Park group camps are available for year-round use, catering to winter activities like snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, though main park buildings often have restricted operating hours.
Features / Highlights
The defining highlights of Group Camp 2 are its capacity for large groups and its beautiful, forested setting, making it a prime choice for organized events in the Minnesota outdoors.
Ideal for Large Groups: This facility is specifically designed to accommodate a high volume of users, making it a highly practical solution for family reunions, educational trips, or corporate/organizational retreats.

Organized Event Potential: The covered shelter and large number of tables make it easy to host structured activities, games, and large communal meals with minimal logistical hassle.
Event Participation: The location is confirmed as a site for annual State Park events, such as the luminary walk, providing proof of its inclusion in community and seasonal park activities.

Excellent Shading: The mature tree canopy provides excellent shading, a necessary feature for groups spending extended time outdoors during Minnesota’s warm summer days.

Feb 02, 2024 · Wyatt W. PenkeWas there for the annual luminary walk. Was a wonderful experience. Wish it had been a little colder, the path was a little slushy and muddy in spots. But all in all I would definitely attend again. Was a beautiful night spent outdoors among the beauty of our local State Park.
