Introduction / Overview: Your Glacial Lakes Gateway
For South Dakotans seeking an accessible, peaceful, and amenity-rich base camp for their outdoor adventures, Lake Country Campground in Waubay stands as a welcoming local favorite. Nestled in the heart of the renowned Glacial Lakes Region of Northeast South Dakota, this destination is perfectly positioned for those who consider fishing, hunting, bird watching, and the simple tranquility of lake life to be an essential part of the regional heritage. The area is famous for its vast, productive prairie pothole lakes—water bodies created by retreating glaciers that now host some of the finest walleye, yellow perch, and northern pike populations in the entire state. Lake Country Campground provides the necessary amenities and accommodations to make the most of this exceptional natural setting.
The campground offers a variety of lodging options, catering to the traditional RV enthusiast, seasonal campers looking for a long-term spot, and even those who prefer the cozy comfort of a rustic cabin. It is designed to be a true local hub, a place where the focus is on ease of access to the water and the camaraderie of fellow outdoor lovers. Unlike some mega-resorts, Lake Country Campground maintains a grounded, community-focused feel, ensuring a relaxing and less-frantic experience that truly connects visitors with the quiet beauty of Day County.
Being situated so closely to major regional lakes like Waubay Lake, Bitter Lake, Pickerel Lake, Enemy Swim Lake, and Blue Dog Lake makes this campground an invaluable resource. Whether you're hauling a boat for a weekend tournament or simply looking for a peaceful spot to launch a kayak, the location cuts down on travel time and maximizes your time spent enjoying the clear South Dakota skies and productive waters. It is an ideal spot for South Dakota residents who appreciate genuine, no-frills access to world-class outdoor opportunities.
Location and Accessibility: Right in the Heart of Walleye Country
Lake Country Campground is conveniently located just a short drive from the small, friendly community of Waubay, South Dakota, putting you right in the center of the state’s premier fishing and hunting territory. The Glacial Lakes Region is a beautiful landscape of rolling hills, native grasslands, and countless lakes—a direct result of the last Ice Age. This geographical legacy has created a unique ecosystem, the Prairie Pothole Region, which acts as a major flyway for migratory birds and offers highly fertile, shallow-to-medium-depth lakes that produce remarkable fishing. Access to the campground is straightforward, typically involving a short drive off U.S. Highway 12, the main artery connecting many of the region’s communities.
The campground’s specific address ensures you are secluded enough for peace and quiet, yet still only minutes away from local necessities and public access points. For those coming from larger South Dakota cities like Watertown or Aberdeen, the drive is highly manageable, making it a perfect weekend or seasonal retreat without excessive travel hassle. Being close to Waubay also means easy access to local services, bait shops, and the famous Blue Dog Fish Hatchery, a state facility dedicated to maintaining the region’s robust fish populations.
The accessibility also extends to nearby natural treasures. The Waubay National Wildlife Refuge, a key stopover for migratory birds, is an absolute must-visit and is only a short distance away. Similarly, Pickerel Lake Recreation Area and Fort Sisseton Historic State Park—a beautifully preserved 1864 frontier military post—are easily reachable, providing family-friendly historical and recreational opportunities that complement a camping trip.

No picnic tables. Grate to the fire pit would not flip over. Weird rules. Dumpster was crazy full & felt dumb trying to put our trash in there. Giant hole by our campsite we were warned not to fall in. 😂 may be a campground for campers. Not much shade really.
