Introduction / Overview
For local anglers, hunters, and families seeking an authentic South Dakota lake experience, Bitter Lake Lodge Campground offers a compelling all-in-one destination. Situated directly on the shores of the legendary Bitter Lake in the heart of the Glacial Lakes region, this establishment combines a dedicated campground with a full-service lodge and restaurant. Bitter Lake itself is a meandered lake renowned throughout the Midwest for its exceptional walleye and yellow perch fishery, making the lodge and campground a high-value basecamp for fishermen.
The resort is specifically designed to cater to the needs of the serious outdoor enthusiast, providing essential amenities like a private boat ramp and a modern fish cleaning station. However, the experience extends beyond the fishing dock; the on-site Bitter Lake Lodge provides a welcome convenience, offering dining options and a social hub. While the reviews reflect a fantastic dining value and a quality, modern interior—one guest noted the buffet had "very good" food and was a "solid, above average buffet with good service at a good value"—there are also notes regarding inconsistent service times. The overall positive atmosphere, solid value, and definite recommendation for a return visit (a 5-star rating for "Would I go back / Recommend?") solidify its reputation as a highly desirable location in Waubay, SD, for those who value premium lake access and on-site conveniences.
Location and Accessibility
Bitter Lake Lodge Campground is ideally positioned on the northeast shore of Bitter Lake, one of the premier fishing destinations in Day County. Its physical address is 14307 446th Ave, Waubay, SD 57273, USA. This location places it squarely in the middle of the Glacial Lakes region, which is famous for its concentration of quality fishing and hunting opportunities. Bitter Lake, having expanded to over 15,000 acres due to high water conditions, is managed as a thriving walleye and yellow perch fishery, offering boundless opportunities right from the campground's edge.
Accessibility is a key feature for guests. The resort maintains its own private, third-party access point to the lake, which is a major convenience for campers bringing their own boats. Furthermore, the property is strategically located just a short drive from other popular bodies of water, including Waubay Lake, Blue Dog Lake, and Enemy Swim Lake. It is also well-situated for local attractions like the Blue Dog Fish Hatchery, the Waubay National Wildlife Refuge, and Fort Sisseton Historical State Park, providing activities for the entire family beyond just the fishing boat. The resort’s proximity to Waubay and the main highway routes ensures that it is easily reached by residents traveling from across South Dakota.

4.4* (out of 5) Food: 4* Atmosphere: 4* Value: 5* Service: 4* Would I go back / Recommend?: 5* (Definitely) Total check/person: $18 07/13/2025 We were looking for a place to stop for brunch after Mass in Webster on our way back home to Des Moines and my in-laws suggested Bitter Lake Lodge's buffet. The building has a modern steel exterior and a modern hunting cabin like interior with a concrete floor (see pictures). Service was prompt and there was a reasonable selection on the buffet line (scrambled eggs, scrambled eggs with veggies and cheese, bacon, sausages, potatoes, biscuits & gravy, pancakes and french toast sticks). The scrambled eggs were very good and the potatoes were good, but they were out after we went through and were not replenished. The sausages were plentiful and the bacon was thick, hearty and smokey. Overall, this was a solid, above average buffet with good service at a good value ($12.99 + coffee / beverage). Other than a desire that they be a bit more attentive to the quantity of food in the pans and replenishing as required, my main disappointment was that black plastic forks were the only eating utensils available. Given the available foods, metal knives wouldn't be necessary - but having metal forks would be appreciated. If you found this review helpful, please show your appreciation with a Like or a Follow.
Jul 13, 2025 · Todd Braun (The Food and Drink Guy)All three times I have been service takes over an hour to get food. Two times leaving before being served. Tonight we arrived at 8:20 took 15 minutes to get ordered and food has not arrived even at 9:31. Server was seen sitting at the table next to us just visiting.
May 15, 2025 · andrea andersonWe were up from Kansas last weekend and had the best time ever, fishing wasn't bad either! The food was great but most important, the service was truly outstanding, from the manager, the waitresses we had, and the bartender! We all felt very welcome and met some good folks. Keep up the great work, we will be back!!
Feb 01, 2024 · Dennis GarrisonGreat service. Excellent people to help with fishing advice. Great fishing.
Dec 16, 2018 · Kari PerryGreat place to stay, close to the lake, clean bathhouse and the owner is a super nice guy! I stayed at the campground in an ice shack for 3 nights, Mark was able to give some fishing advice on the early ice and was very helpful in every step of reservation to check out. Unfortunately the lodge was closed for unforeseen circumstances during my short stay. I was looking forward to a nice steak dinner and a beer. Always next time.
