Features / Highlights

What truly sets the Texas Elks Camp apart and makes it a cherished institution in Texas are its unique features and highlights, all centered around its profound mission.

  • Free for Eligible Children: Perhaps the most significant highlight is that the camp is completely free for all eligible children with special needs and those in foster care who are Texas residents. This eliminates financial barriers, making the transformative camp experience accessible to families who might otherwise be unable to afford it.
  • Focus on Special Needs and Foster Children: The camp's unwavering dedication to this specific demographic ensures a tailored and supportive environment where children can thrive amongst peers with similar experiences. This focus fosters a strong sense of community and belonging.
  • Emphasis on Independence and Self-Esteem: A core tenet of the camp's philosophy is to encourage campers to make their own decisions, become more independent, and embrace new challenges. Parents often report significant positive changes and improved self-esteem in their children after just one week at camp.
  • Historic Facilities: The camp features unique and historic buildings, such as the Chapel, which was built in 1943 by German Prisoners of War and later moved to the camp. This adds a unique element of history to the camp experience.
  • High Staff-to-Camper Ratio: With a ratio of approximately 1:2, campers receive individualized attention and support, ensuring their safety and maximizing their engagement in activities.
  • Diverse Program Offerings: The camp continually strives to offer a diverse range of activities, including on-site improvements like a turf grass field, allowing for a broader spectrum of engaging and accessible experiences. They prioritize providing more activities directly at the facility.
  • Community-Driven Support: The camp is a major project of the Texas Elks State Association, largely funded through the charitable efforts of Texas Elks Lodges, including endowment funds, memorials, and the Elks Sweetheart program. This deep community involvement underscores the camp's commitment to its mission.
  • Recognition and Testimonials: Real customer reviews highlight the "amazing place" and "wonderful staff" who "definitely enjoy what they do and go out of their way to do it." The consistent positive feedback from families, especially those noting how much fun their children have, speaks volumes about the camp's impact.

Promotions or Special Offers

Given its charitable mission, the primary "special offer" of the Texas Elks Camp is the provision of a free, all-inclusive summer camp experience for eligible children. This fundamental offering is a continuous "promotion" in itself, making a life-changing opportunity accessible without financial burden to families across Texas. The camp does not typically run commercial promotions in the traditional sense, as its focus is on service rather than profit.

However, potential applicants should note that camper registration opens annually, often in January, and campers are accepted on a "first-come, first-served" basis. This means that interested families should apply promptly once applications become available to secure a spot for their child. While there are no monetary discounts or loyalty programs, the incredible value of a free, specialized, and highly supportive camp experience is the greatest "special offer" provided.

The Texas Elks Camp is generously supported by the Texas Elks State Association, with funding coming from various initiatives by local Elks Lodges and individual donations. These efforts, such as the Elks Sweetheart program, directly contribute to covering the costs of the camp, allowing it to remain free for the children it serves. Therefore, while not a "promotion" for campers, the camp itself is a continuous philanthropic endeavor supported by a broad network of dedicated individuals and organizations.

Back when I was a school nurse I was privileged to be the camp nurse for one summer in the 90s. I got to take my sons with me as "Jr. Counselors". It was one of the happiest summers of our lives. We have many great memories of our time there. I highly recommend this camp.
