Location and Accessibility
The Lake Elmo Park Reserve modern campground is conveniently located at 1515 Keats Ave N, Lake Elmo, MN 55042, USA. This prime address places it squarely within Washington County, a part of the vibrant and expansive Twin Cities metropolitan area. For residents across Minnesota, particularly those in and around Minneapolis and St. Paul, this location offers an ideal blend of natural escape and easy accessibility to urban conveniences.
Lake Elmo itself is a charming city that provides a welcoming gateway to the park reserve. Its placement allows for straightforward navigation from major interstates and highways, making it an easy drive for campers coming from various parts of Minnesota. The proximity to the Twin Cities means that campers can enjoy the tranquility of nature without being far from essential services, retail outlets, and a wide array of dining options. This convenience is a significant advantage, allowing for quick resupply trips or easy access to specialized services if needed during a camping trip.
Beyond the immediate vicinity, the park's accessibility extends to its connection with a larger network of Washington County Parks and regional trails. This facilitates opportunities for longer bike rides, extensive hikes, or even exploring other nearby natural attractions. While the park aims to provide a natural retreat, its well-connected location ensures that visitors are not isolated, offering a balance between wilderness experience and modern convenience. It’s important to note that a Washington County Parks vehicle permit is required for entry, which can be purchased at park kiosks, offices, or online. This entry fee is separate from camping rates but contributes to the overall upkeep and accessibility of these valuable natural resources.
Services Offered
The Lake Elmo Park Reserve modern campground, as part of the Washington County Parks system, offers a range of services designed to enhance the camping experience. However, it's essential to note that customer reviews highlight some critical points regarding communication and refund policies for certain park amenities.
- Campsite Rentals: The primary service is providing eighty campsites suited for tents, trailers, or motor homes. These sites come with various electrical hookup options (20/30/50 amp), and most also include water hook-ups. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring/grill for convenience.
- Modern Bathroom Facilities: Campers have access to modern bathroom facilities with flush toilets and hot showers, a significant comfort feature for extended stays.
- Trailer/RV Dump Station: For RV and trailer campers, a dedicated dump station is available, which is included with a camping reservation.
- Online Reservation System: Campers can book their sites through an online reservation system, allowing for planning and booking in advance. This system also allows users to view, modify, or cancel reservations.
- Park Office Services: A park office is available, and staff are present to assist with check-ins, provide information, and offer essential items like firewood and ice for purchase.
- Seasonal Swimming Pond Access (with important caveats): The park features a man-made, chlorinated swimming pond. However, as noted in a review, its availability can be seasonal or subject to unannounced closures. It's crucial for visitors to verify the pond's operational status before planning a visit, especially if swimming is a primary activity. There are clear indications that refunds for daily passes may not be issued for such closures.
- Daily Pass Sales (with communication issues): The park sells daily passes for general park access and amenities like the swimming pond. However, a review points to a significant issue where daily passes were sold without clear communication or signage about the swimming pond being closed, leading to frustration and no refund.
- Event Management (with communication issues): The park hosts events, which can impact accessibility. One review highlights that an event caused significant delays in park entry, and there was no prior notification on the website, indicating a need for improved event communication to visitors.
Features / Highlights
Lake Elmo Park Reserve modern campground offers numerous features and highlights designed to create an enjoyable outdoor experience for Minnesotans. However, it's also important to address the operational concerns raised by recent visitors to provide a comprehensive and factual overview.
- Diverse Campsite Options: The modern campground boasts eighty campsites accommodating tents, trailers, and motor homes. Many sites offer 20/30/50 amp electrical hook-ups and water, providing comfort and convenience for various camping styles. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring/grill, perfect for outdoor meals and campfires.
- Modern Amenities: Visitors appreciate the modern bathroom facilities with flush toilets and hot showers, significantly enhancing comfort compared to more rustic camping experiences. A trailer/RV dump station is also available for convenience.
- Family-Friendly Atmosphere: The campground includes a play area for children, contributing to a family-friendly environment. The presence of a swimming pond (when open) further adds to recreational opportunities for all ages.
- Beautiful Natural Setting: As part of Lake Elmo Park Reserve, the campground is surrounded by diverse ecosystems. The park offers extensive multi-use trails for hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing, allowing campers to explore the beautiful landscapes, observe wildlife like pheasants and deer, and connect with nature. The park is often described as "a nice sized park close to the cities."
- Man-Made Swimming Pond: A unique feature is the chlorinated, man-made swimming pond, providing a beach and pool experience. Most areas are shallow, making it generally safe for families. However, its operational status can be inconsistent, and visitors should verify availability before arrival.
- Accessibility: The campground is handicap accessible, ensuring that individuals with disabilities can enjoy the outdoor experience.
- Proximity to Twin Cities: Its location near Minneapolis and St. Paul offers the convenience of being close to urban centers while still providing a genuine escape into nature. This allows for easy day trips to the cities or quick access to supplies.
- On-Site Purchases: Firewood and ice are available for purchase at the park offices, adding to the convenience for campers.
- Inconsistent Communication & Lack of Refunds (Major Concern): A significant drawback highlighted by reviews is the poor communication regarding park closures or events. Visitors have experienced frustration due to lack of signage for a closed swimming pond after paying for daily passes, and staff allegedly being rude and refusing refunds. Similarly, unadvertised events causing park entry delays are a source of frustration, indicating a need for improved communication channels (e.g., website updates, prominent signage).
- No Pets in Campgrounds (Important Policy): It is crucial for dog owners to note that "Pets are not allowed" in any of the campgrounds (modern, rustic, hike-in, or group sites) at Lake Elmo Park Reserve. While pets are allowed on some multi-use trails, this strict policy for campgrounds can be a major deterrent for those traveling with canine companions, despite general Google Maps listings suggesting "dog friendly" which applies only to specific trails and a dedicated dog park within the broader reserve.
Promotions or Special Offers
Based on the available public information, Lake Elmo Park Reserve modern campground does not typically offer traditional "promotions" or "special offers" in the sense of discounts or limited-time deals on camping rates. However, Washington County Parks, which manages Lake Elmo Park Reserve, does offer some recurring benefits and pricing structures that could be considered advantageous for regular visitors:
- Vehicle Permits: While a daily vehicle permit ($7.00 per overnight stay or per day) is required for park entry and is not included in camping rates, Washington County Parks also offers a 12-month annual vehicle permit for $30.00. For frequent visitors to Lake Elmo Park Reserve or other Washington County Parks, this annual pass represents a significant saving over purchasing daily passes, effectively acting as a long-term discount for park access.
- Free Park Entry Tuesdays: On the first Tuesday (non-holiday) of every month, visitors can enter any Washington County Park for free, with no vehicle permit required. This provides an excellent opportunity for locals to experience the park and its trails without an entry fee, which could lead to future camping visits.
- Group Camping Options: For larger groups, the park offers several group campsites at varying rates ($70-$93 per night), some with shelters and electricity, which can be a cost-effective solution for family reunions or larger gatherings compared to booking multiple individual sites.
- Reservation System: While not a promotion, the online reservation system allows campers to secure their preferred sites in advance, especially during peak seasons, which is a valuable service for planning and ensuring availability.
It is important for prospective visitors to be aware of the daily vehicle permit requirement in addition to camping fees. For the most up-to-date pricing on campsites and vehicle permits, and to check for any potential seasonal programs or events, visitors should consult the official Washington County Parks website or contact the park office directly.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
Lake Elmo Park Reserve modern campground stands as a significant outdoor destination for locals in Minnesota, particularly those residing in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Its suitability stems from a blend of convenient accessibility, diverse recreational opportunities, and a commitment to providing a comfortable camping experience, though potential visitors should be aware of specific operational policies.
For Minnesotans, the primary draw is the campground's strategic location. Nestled in Lake Elmo, it offers a refreshing escape into nature without requiring a long journey from urban centers. This makes it an ideal spot for weekend getaways, impromptu overnight stays, or even just day trips to utilize the park's extensive trail system and swimming pond (when open). The ease of access means less travel time and more time enjoying the outdoors, a crucial factor for busy families and individuals seeking quick natural retreats.
The modern campground facilities themselves are a significant appeal. With sites accommodating both RVs and tents, equipped with electrical and water hook-ups, picnic tables, and fire rings, campers can enjoy a comfortable experience. The availability of modern bathrooms with hot showers and a dump station for RVs further elevates the camping experience, bridging the gap between rustic outdoor living and necessary conveniences. The play area for children and the presence of a swimming pond (seasonal) make it particularly attractive for families looking for engaging activities.
However, it is vital for locals to note the strict "no pets allowed" policy within all campgrounds. This is a crucial piece of information for dog owners who may assume pet-friendliness extends to camping areas based on the broader park's dog-friendly trails and dedicated dog park. Additionally, recent customer feedback highlights the importance of verifying the operational status of amenities like the swimming pond and checking the park's online calendar for any events that might impact entry or activities. Improved communication from park staff and management regarding closures and event schedules is an area where visitors have expressed frustration.
Despite these points of concern, Lake Elmo Park Reserve remains a valuable asset for Minnesota residents. Its natural beauty, extensive trail network, and the convenience of a modern campground close to the metro area make it an excellent choice for a variety of outdoor enthusiasts. For those planning a visit, a quick check of the official website or a call to the park office for the latest updates on amenities and events will help ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience in this beautiful Minnesota park.
Customer Reviews
Bad!! My brother paid 7 dollars for a daily pass to go swimming and when we went there, they closed the swimming pond. Went back to confront them about why they didn't have a big sign that they closed the swimming pond. One of the female white employee there spoke to me in a disrespectful manner, saying, "We have signs over there!" Could have let us know before we paid! And I ask for a refund and they didn't want a refund on daily pass. Wasted my family's time to drive all the way there and that day was hot. Bad and rude employee, could have put up a big sign that could said "Swimming pond is close for the season" even though it was hot that day. Never coming to Elmo again!
I'm upset. I was about to book a camping reservation on their online system - but due to the time of the year I was hesitant - so I decided to go there and take a peak at the water situation and bug levels. Even though I had stated in the reservation system that I was planning on bringing my dog - when I got there there are signs up everywhere that state No Dogs allowed. On top of that when you are looking them up on Google maps - they also state that they are dog friendly - which is a lie. Also of note - When I got there it took me forever to get into the park due to there being some kind of an event going on. There had been nothing on their website regarding the matter - so this was also frustrating. Had I made that reservation I would have been fuming - At current - I will just never visit the place again. Which is sad because it's a nice sized park close to the cities. Boo!
Office where you can get ski pass ($6/day) and rent skis ($10/3hrs). Helpful and efficient.
Love this camping facility. Clean and nice. Been camping here since last year and will come again.
