Introduction / Overview: Embracing True Primitive Camping Near Eldred, NY
For New York residents who view camping not as a resort experience, but as an authentic immersion in the wild, the area loosely described as "Lakeside camping" near Eldred, NY, points directly toward the rustic, no-fee experience found at the Hickok Brook Multiple Use Area (MUA). This 1,036-acre New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) property offers a rare chance for truly primitive, secluded camping in Sullivan County, near the scenic Delaware River region.
It is crucial for local users to understand that this is not a commercial campground; it is a public forest access area. The experience here is rugged and requires self-sufficiency. Visitors seeking hot showers, flush toilets, or a camp store will be disappointed. Instead, the Hickok Brook MUA provides designated campsites along the road and near the small pond, surrounded by forested terrain, allowing for a pure, "pack in, pack out" adventure. The allure is in the freedom and the deep connection with nature, which includes swimming in the pond, hiking the multiple-use trails, and freshwater fishing in Hickok Brook. However, the true enjoyment of this beautiful, free resource hinges entirely on responsible usage and a strict adherence to conservation ethics, including the critical practice of Leave No Trace.
Location and Accessibility: Remote but Reachable in Sullivan County

Access within the MUA is primarily via seasonal roads and multiple-use trails. The main access road, which has a gate that opens typically from May 1st until winter conditions make it impassable, provides vehicle access to the pond area where several designated campsites are located. This accessibility makes it easy for local users to transport essential gear for a primitive trip, though four-wheel drive might be advisable depending on weather and road conditions. Its location puts outdoor enthusiasts in the heart of the southern Catskills/Delaware River area, with other recreational activities, such as river trips and local towns like Eldred, just a short drive away.

Conclusion: Why This Place is Suitable for Locals
For New York residents who are self-reliant, environmentally conscious, and dedicated to the spirit of minimalist adventure, Hickok Brook Multiple Use Area offers an invaluable resource. This is a place where you can truly disconnect from the urban grid and embrace nature on a deeper level, all while utilizing free state public land. Its suitability lies in its wildness and the opportunities for rugged recreation—hiking, hunting, and fishing—that are difficult to find closer to metropolitan areas.
However, suitability comes with a major caveat: the camping here demands responsible behavior. The lack of amenities, highlighted in user reviews that speak to the need for better sanitation and trash disposal, reinforces the expectation that visitors must be stewards of the land. For the educated local camper who meticulously practices Leave No Trace—packing out all trash, burying human waste properly (at least 150 feet from water, camp, or trails), and minimizing campfire impact—this MUA provides an unmatched, cost-free gateway to the authentic, beautiful woodlands of the Catskills. It is a vital and beautiful space for those who respect its primitive nature.
Camped here with friends. There is no shower/toilet but you can swim in the pond. it's a great place but unfortunately people leave trash, pee/poop everywhere and it was smelly
